As we speak, longtime members JHale667 and Bantonelli are representing THE Roth Army at a private party for none other than Van Halen in Los Angeles!! There will be food, drinks, and of course, music!! Van Halen is expected to take the stage to play some songs. What songs they'll play is unknown right now.

But don't fret, the event will be taped, and we hope to get some great video soon!!

Either way I knew what you were leading up to today in that other thread and by the lack of PM's I recieved (or didn't) today,, I guessed it wasn't me going ######..grrrr.LOL..

Bantonelli and Hale are great members here and deserving ..This is just great that this site and the online VH community is getting some cred after years of true and unswerving loyalty to VH and DLR.

Jhale667, has allways been cool and I believe some-what of a guitarist and musician of some respect around certain parts, this is going to be a unique perspective coming from him in his report...even if his report consists of ...-uhh dude.it was cool.-

If I was invited all brain cells would have been gone by the close of the after after party at some 3am club.

You can tell Dave is beaming, and I don't know about the rest of you but I feel more complete seeing these pictures come up. I never had the privilege of growing up with CVH up and running, so seeing this all happen is the equivalent of every Christmas morning x100. It very well could be.. he slapped a Wolf neck in there - I don't see why he'd do that with one of the replicas? Maybe just wishful thinking on my part..

Im thinking its a replica. It looks weird though...just from the pics. It looks like it has a dark logo on the headstock like the first year EVH wolfgangs or Peavey wolfgangs....but the Replica didn't have that neck...hmmmm...

Most bands change the set list throught a tour, they will probably always play Jump and the standards, that is the bread money man.

Who would have gone to see Dean martin if he didn't sing, your nobody till somebody loves you.

3 new tunes in the show is enough for me.

It's an EVH Wolfgang neck - note the binding around the headstock. The Peavey didn't have that.

True, but the Replicas didn't have those necks/headstock. its all fender produced , but it seems odd to have it on the replica. alas, another mystery for another day.

Maybe they reworked "Jump" with steel drums instead of synthesizers? Give it a little Carribean flavor...... http://lovetonic.info/images/dancing%20rasta.gif

Oh yeah, definitely no argument here...just speculating.

Im not sure he'd take the original Frankie out. as I understand it from guitar mags, he 's said its too beaten up.
I'm just surprised because if its the replica, it doesn't have that EVH neck/headstock, its a blank fender style neck and headstock. Im wondering if its a special one just for Ed. BUT, if its a replacement...seems weird to go with a different style neck.

Look at all the people here tonight!!
This was the most incredible thing I've ever experienced. Thanks to VA and DDE for making it happen. I'm sure BAntonelli will post her take on the evening, but I'm pretty sure she had fun. ;) They KICKED ASS. The party was awesome (think I'm gonnna marry my bartender..LOL), and I've never heard them sound better (no, not even in 1984)...not sure I even have the verbiage to describe it. The onnly 2 new songs played were "The Trouble with Never" and "She's the Woman" and oh yeah "Tattoo" which makes 3, but they RIPPED. B and I hung out with Brett from the Links and Jeff from VHND all night, very cool peeps, as is our DDE rep...this was a once in a lifetime experience, glad we got to be a part of it. They are SMOKING live, people...go see it!!

As much as this is soooo past my bedtime on a "school night", I am wound up and wide awake due to this UNBELIEVABLE night of mystery and surprise via JHale667. I was not told ahead of time what was going on - . Before I go further, I want to give an all out special THANK YOU to JHALE667!!! I was honored to be there and invited. The best "date" I have and will ever experience..LOL!! truly. A special thanks to VA Beach Fan and Sarge.
The CD release party for 'A Different Kind of Truth" took place at Henson Recording Studios (formerly A&M Records) and started out with a cocktail reception, complete with food trucks. JHale and I started on our first open bar cocktail as Valerie Bertinelli and her husband walked by. We continued to casually mingle and soon met up with Jeff Hausman and his wife and Brett and his wife.

We were all directed to enter a large studio with the coolest VH video displayed on all four walls within the room. Soon our guys came on stage, looking happy, healthy and ready to rumble. Dave is in top form physically as well as being the ultimate showman he is - utilizing the stage dancing as no one else can do. The new songs are ROCKIN. Even noticed one of the familiar faces of the celeb website "TMZ.com" rocking out in disbelief he was actually watching this legendary band. As the band played their last song, brazilian drummers and Las Vegas style show girls in feather ensembles came out to dance. Dave danced with them and they continued to dance on stage and continued the good par-tay vibe after the music stopped as they danced out near the bar area. I will be more specific if it isn't already detailed by JHALE, but towards the end of the night, both JHALE and I received the pleasure of meeting and shook hands with Dave's sisters, Lisa and Allison, introducing ourselves as reps of ROTH ARMY. Once we actually left the studios, we had more great conversations with Jeff Hausman and his wife and Brett and his wife. We all agreed that this CD is paramount and this tour is full of fresh vibes and you don't want to miss it.

Live Review: Van Halen turns it up during Los Angeles private show
HAVE THEY STILL GOT WHAT IT TAKES?

By Melinda Newman THURSDAY, FEB 2, 2012 4:26 AM

As Van Halen drew “She’s The Woman” —a tune on the quartet’s Feb. 7 album, “A Different Kind of Truth”—to a close during the group’s secret show Wednesday night on the Henson Studios lot in Los Angeles, Eddie Van Halen crossed behind David Lee Roth so the two ended up face to face when the song came to its cold stop.

Standing only a few feet apart, they looked at each other and both broke into wide, maniacal grins, so obviously delighted to be back on stage and in front of an adoring audience.

And so it went for much of the hour-long show. As rough and ragtag as some spots were, there was never a moment when it felt like the band, rounded out by Van Halen’s son Wolfgang on bass and his brother Alex Van Halen on drums, was phoning it in. For all the drama and demons that have chased the group during its fractured 40 years off stage, the state of the Van Halen union felt strong when they stood on stage together.

Like the Jan. 5 show at New York’s Cafe Wha?, Wednesday's concert lasted about an hour, was for a very small, industry-only audience—around 250—and, most importantly, highlighted what first single “Tattoo” from “Truth” has not —Van Halen remains a supremely entertaining live act.

Of course, it helps when you have a front man as engaging as Roth, who simply comes alive on stage. He threw every fiber of his body into each song, whether displayed through the still enviably high leg kicks (really impressive for a dude in his mid-50s), the limber hip shakes, or just a general showmanship that combines carnival barker with Liberace with his own dazzling Diamond Dave persona.

The band performed on a riser that formed a horseshoe around the venue and Roth amply worked all three sides, leaning over and waving and flirting with the crowd, at one point telling a woman, “I’d still be in home room if you’d been there,” as he mugged during “Hot for Teacher.”

Roth’s once-pyrotechnic voice is still capable of great yelps and screams, if not quite as readily or quite as dramatically as 30 years ago. It’s still powerful, even if he had occasional issues with staying on tune. At least there was certainly no doubt that he was singing live.

In these small confines, it was possible to watch Eddie Van Halen up close. It there was any possible distraction from Roth’s constant hijinks, it was Van Halen’s flying fingers, as nimble and dextrous as always in a way that simply defied credulity. Rooted in one spot, Van Halen barely worked up a sweat, grinning from ear-to-ear while he played, especially during a smoldering solo on “Unchained.” On the group’s last tour in 2007 with Roth, there had been the occasional cancelled dates and Van Halen’s health had often been in question, but he seemed fit as a fiddle and raring to go on Wednesday.

Between Roth and Eddie Van Halen, there’s no room for any more flash, and Wolfgang and Alex wisely ground the whole enterprise. Wolfgang’s bass playing is perfectly proficient, and while his presence and backing vocals don’t match those of his predecessor, Michael Anthony, he certainly held his own. Alex reliably and steadily pounded away, especially on “Runnin’ With the Devil.”

Unlike the Cafe Wha? show, which only featured one track from “A Different Kind of Truth,” the band’s first new studio album with Roth in 28 years, Wednesday’s performance also threw in “Tattoo” and “The Trouble With Never,” a bluesy, swampy number. While it’s safe to say that neither will be Van Halen classics, they fit in well beside the band’s biggest hits.

Van Halen closed with “Jump,” accompanied by scantily-clad show girls, a drum line, and exploding confetti. It was as woolly and wild and as gloriously fun as you could hope it to be. Pure joy.

To bottom line it: If you’ve been wondering if it’s worth shelling out the money for tickets for the new tour, which starts Feb. 18, here’s the answer: If—at any point in your life—you were a Van Halen fan, then absolutely yes. They’re bringing a party to town and David Lee Roth is leading the parade.

Van Halen’s Henson Studios set list:

“You Really Got Me”
“Runnin’ With The Devil”
“Unchained”
“The Trouble With Never”
“Everybody Wants Some”
“She’s The Woman”
“Dance The Night Away”
“Panama”
“Tattoo”
“Hot For Teacher”
“Ice Cream Man”
“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”
“Jump”

Van Halen Deliver Showy Performance at Private L.A. Gig (Video)

The iconic rock band, whose new album, "A Different Kind of Truth," is due Feb. 7, pulled out all the stops for an industry-heavy showcase at Hollywood's Henson Studios.
5:00 AM PST 2/2/2012 by Shirley Halperin

As someone who never got a chance to see Van Halen “back in the day,” Wednesday night’s private show at Henson Studios was one heck of a treat. There, in a converted space that held several hundred industry revelers, smack-dab in the middle of the large and storied recording complex (where, legend has it, the ghost of Karen Carpenter still lives), original members Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth and Alex Van Halen, along with Eddie’s son Wolfgang on bass (replacing Michael Anthony), shredded, jumped, wailed, joked and most consistently, smiled throughout the 13-song set which ran well over an hour.

Musically, nothing about the performance disappointed. The band kicked out the classics gingerly (“Everybody Wants Some,” “Dance the Night Away,” “Running With the Devil,” "Hot For Teacher"), offered a cover (opener “You Really Got Me”) and a couple new songs (“Tattoo,” “She’s the Woman”) from their forthcoming album, A Different Kind of Truth (out Feb. 7).

Eddie Van Halen’s incredible guitar-playing skills are still a sight to behold. David Lee Roth’s voice, possibly spared debilitating damage because he took so many years off from performing, sounded strong and perfectly on pitch. Alex Van Halen mightily held his own from the back while Wolfie on stage right was particularly impressive, taking away much of the anticipated disappointment over not having a proper full reunion of all four original members.

The audience responded in kind, especially during the beloved "Panama," which had TMZ’s resident goldilocks Max Hodges flailing wildly and bordering on disruptive -- in the most entertaining way. Meanwhile, outside, invited guests got to enjoy three open bars and a corral of food trucks, offering everything from free tater tots to hot dogs to vegan tacos.

As visuals go, the band lined the walls of the C-shaped makeshift venue with floor-to-ceiling LED video screens, which displayed giant projections of the guys both live in the moment and captured from previous rehearsals. Confetti was blasted over the crowd, Vegas showgirls and a marching band of drummers were brought out for “Jump,” the night’s closer (see video below), but David Lee Roth kept up much of the energy all on his own, regaling the crowd with stories of his EMT days and taunting them with banter like this: “A lot of you are on prescription meds tonight; the other half of you actually own a prescription for those meds.”

This is where things got confusing. Roth’s frequent mentions of drinking, drugs and partying might make one think these guys are still going at it hard, when, in fact, all four are said to be sober. What’s with all the boozy bravado? The only explanation I could glean from those in the know was that it was all for show. Indeed, that’s what this industry confab felt like: an orchestrated promotional dance, not so much a rock concert.

Also baffling: the ear-to-ear grins. For a guy who’s been described as perpetually angry and difficult, Eddie Van Halen sure didn’t give off an air of darkness. To the contrary, his perma-grin coupled with a flamingo pink tee painted the picture of happy-go-lucky dad, who happens to be a world-class guitar god.

And why were they being so nice to the press anyway? Showering us with cocktails (no whiskey or any brown liquor, curiously) and food, even dessert. Everyone knows that after 40 years, the band, and Eddie in particular, detest doing interviews and, in fact, turn down most requests. To me, that says, here’s a band that won’t suck up to the media in the hopes of generating sales, and I respect that. (Worth noting: it’s been proven time and time again that press does not necessarily lead to sales, but awareness still plays a big role in first week numbers.) It also makes me think that whether they move 200,000 units or 20,000, what really matters to the band is whether their core fan base -- no matter how big or small -- is happy with the music. I have no idea whether this is actually the case, but that, of course, is how it should be.

So to quote an ad from Van Halen’s day, is it real or is it Memorex? And does it actually matter if being entertained is the end goal? In pondering the “showiness” of this gig, which included a stage-wide Best Buy logo that appeared intermittently, my conclusion is that it’s not fair to judge them on it. Weird industry crowds where more eyeballs are on cell phone screens than the iconic band right in front of them does not compare to the feel of an arena and an audience who shelled out their hard-earned dollars for three hours of concert goodness.

No, this was the Cliff’s Notes version of Van Halen -- quick and to the point: we want your column inches, your unique views, your airtime, your influence. Just don’t make us talk to you one-on-one.

Funny how this being a show/party behind locked guarded gates got the top secret, I will tell you but have to kill you treatment. But VH playing a public pub in NY with no gates or guards in a bigger crazier city was publicly known for a while.

I'm still in shock, and yes - my face hurts from smiling too!!! The band seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves and it sounded like it. I was 4 people back from the stage between DLR and EVH...never have seen them that close (7th row in pretty much the same spot in '84, but this was waaaaay more intimate). Thanks again to SARGE, VA, DDE and everyone who made this possible. I'm still awestruck. Complimented Ross Hogarth on the production, Dave's sisters are awesome, too. I'm glad I asked BAntonelli to come with instead of one of the girls I work with or someone who wouldn't appreciate the signifigance of the thing the way she did, pretty sure she had a blast too! :killer:

Damn cool... Hogarth's comment months ago about it being the killing side of VH was dead on!! The band is tight as hell and kickin ass!!

Dave sounded great and full of energy... I ain't gonna apologize to no one for fuckin saying this but... the last part of YRGM with the girly ballet dancing and Shirley Temple hand gestures just don't fucking fit with the atomic bombs my ears are getting blasted with. And the camel-toe pants... Really..? Go find the Carhart over-alls... much more dignified for a middle-aged man your age and for this middle-aged man to watch... I'm just sayin...

This shit is almost too good to be true, dude. Fucking great to see the Roth Army getting the recognition it deserves. This forum is a critical interface to the die hards out here and I wouldn't have made it through this roller coaster ride we call Van Halen without it. Now that Dave is back on the throne (he never left it, as far as I'm concerned) - lets hope for a 20-pack. Fucking A.

Now that is what a Rock Band looks like..ahhh there are quite a few bands bringing down the house, but that DLR Ed Alex and Wolf band is just right on time.

Magic.

Train pull'n in that station I'll be smil'n agian!

I have listened to a few of the 90 second clips and a few 90 sec bits of these latest vids , never a whole song, I am keeping it all fresh for the day I ruin what is left of my old speakers.

I almost wish Van Halen was a bar band and only a few of us knew how good it was seeing them like this show is just the best way. Damn ! I wish I would have been there.

Ending the show with some showgirls confetti.. ...just brings a little tear to the old eyball...sexy!

Van Halen Play Big, Bold and Brash at Private L.A. Show

Band delivers glitz and riffs at Henson Studios

By STEVE BALTIN
February 2, 2012 12:20 PM ET

Van Halen's rise to rock godliness in the late Seventies and early Eighties came at a time of excess in all aspects of music, from big blowouts in the industry to well-chronicled decadence by musicians. That spirit was brought back to life – albeit in a much more PG, mostly sober way – Wednesday night in L.A. as the band prepared for its upcoming tour with a private show at Jim Henson Studios in L.A.

The first sign that this was a special event came as the lucky few hundred invited guests walked into the studio courtyard to be greeted by an open bar and food trucks serving a menu ranging from shrimp po' boy sandwiches to tacos and ice cream cookies. This kind of lavish affair has largely migrated over from the worlds of film and video games as the music industry has struggled financially over the last decade. But a Van Halen tour and new album is a major occurence, plus a big excuse to party.

Early in the hour-long set, David Lee Roth quipped, "This was to be an 11 a.m. Tuesday press conference. Then someone moved it to Wednesday at 8 so we can drink." Playing in a tiny studio with a stage that looked like it came right from Madison Square Garden, surrounded by three walls of massive LCD screens projecting every Roth movement and Eddie Van Halen riff in larger-than-life fashion, the quartet of Roth, Eddie, Alex Van Halen and Wolfgang Van Halen delivered a set worthy of the gods.

Opening with "Eruption" and segueing into "You Really Got Me," the quartet ran through 60 minutes of greatest hits and new material. Roth could be seen peeking at his own moves on the LCD screens, perhaps making sure they were right for the tour. Ever the frontman, he made sure his trademark high kicks still reached his head, and he talked often to the crowd as the rest of the group concentrated on getting the songs into touring shape.

They're damn close, as evidenced by several hits, including "Runnin' With the Devil,' "Unchained," "Everybody Wants Some," "Panama" and the closing "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," which still rocks with enough power to make an intimate room feel like an arena. The band also played three new songs: "Tattoo," "The Trouble With Never" and "She's the Woman." The former in particular fit right in (and yes, we're aware the song dates back to the Seventies).

Following "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," which Roth called the last song of the night, he told the crowd the band had no place to go. As confetti fell from above, two drum majors and a cavalcade of Carnival dancers ascended the stairs to the stage to join the band for an encore of "Jump."

As the song ended, the dancers moved into the courtyard, where the party continued with a samba theme. Despite the international flair, this was American rock as only Van Halen does it – big, bold, brash and fun.

It could be the real one, I would think it would be one of the Fender replicas. Regarding the neck on it, Ed probably prefers the neck back shape on the Wolfgang to the Strat style neck that was on it. Plus it is good marketing for his company too. Looks like that neck is broken in nicely with grime so it could be a fav of his for feel too. Either way, good to see stripes back on him.
