Official Release in Australia

Just been through the whole thing.. hope you don't mind if I share..

Tattoo

We know. Actually now that I have heard the rest, a very good call for first single for a number of reasons… good hook, good BVs (see videos for further proof) Most radio friendly – it sticks .. who can argue..… . solid first album song.

But the main reason I think - it showcases Dave brilliantly… “Welcome back Dave!!” – he’s all over this for a reason.. well that’s what I got out of this. HEY PEOPLE…Dave is back… and that’s why it put a smile on my face the first time..

Overanalyze this song at your peril..

I do like Al’s drum sound in this the more I listen.. I may have not paid as much attention when the single came out just fckn… awesome

Missus is already singing this one.. so far so good.

I know people ripped into Ed for not ripping it out on this track… (not from the Army here) but he does in another way.. that DLR/CVH swagger that only THEY can get (FCK all you haters!!!) but it’s a cool, stripped back solo with lots of grin

She’s the Woman
WOW WOW WOW. High point.. Fresh take on a great song… (missus loves this too – good sign??)

This songs fckn motors along… it’s like “I’m driving I don’t need to speed but get the fuck out of my way” song…. … band is awesome. Got to be a single.

There’s a reason in the Café Wha? Video Dave yells “Sing it Wolf” . Wolf fckn NAILS this vocals and bass riff, locked in the zone with Al..

You and Your Blues

ATBL kind of intro/verse but diff tempo… Al’s working well with Ed for this..

I do like in Dave in this…he hits a few high ones in the chorus..

If that’s Wolf on BVs again - THANKYOUVERYMUCH..

Ed and Al are doin just fine btw.. if anyone was wondering… ☺

Like it, don’t know why yet…

China Town

Alex – All over the intro… fark.. if this is his smaller kit.. Al’s got this pumpin…

Solo – Hang ‘em High…. with a knarly twist.

Brilliant… this will be a fan’s fave.. but there’s sooo much good on this CD to go..

Blood and Fire

> Ripley

You all know it…I actually like it…a Diver Down feel… Ed (and Al) pull their gain back and get a cool Diver Down sound.

Unreal that Dave has line “… now look at all of the people.. here tonight” (It’s my favourite line from Dave live)… with AL and Wolf chugging behind this one line sounds brilliant…

“TOLD YA I WAS COMING BACK…” - DLR

BulletHead

Most know it...

Nod to the previously rare track.. sounds amazing to hear it in this quality for the “first time” and a massive cudos to Wolf for doing well here on both counts. (nod to MA)

I already like this song so won't comment.

As If

Cathedral type intro…… at the beginning tells you are in for something special..

Quick, quick, quick.. reminds me of Loss of Control /Girl Gone Bad with an Hang Em High tempo.

Al works up a sweat… using the kit well..

If that’s Wolf keeping up he’s slaying it..

Good middle, cleaner guitar sound..

Probably my favorite so far

Honeysweetiebabydoll

Perhaps a new VH version of intruder into …cool but odd…for about 45 seconds then MONSTERS into to a riff straight off FW.. Dave tells a story here… Ed’s doing well, you think he’s going one way with a tried and true run but he pulls himself a bit left again. new Ed…cool..

Ed gives this one a right monstering…… all the way through he shines on this track. Kids everywhere will be wanting to learn this one…

Then WTF?, cool middle 8 – middle eastern almost.. Ed’s building up for something..

Tasty tasty… solo…can’t describe it.. I think it’s the best one album.. then the ½ second pause then back into main riff that they fckn nail…

That’s the Trouble with Never

Know it.. if you’ve heard it THEN LISTEN AGAIN with good cans/monitors/ speakers… classic VH.. typical VH2.. you can feel it. Some say the wah gets a bit tedious… …

I’d like the verses to go longer, 1st chorus ended quickly and the 2nd verse is in..

Solo – again, Ed sounds like he’s familiar ground again but hits that magic one note more than once..

Breakdown – Dave is at his best… fckn genius

Outta Space

Love it - VH1… straight out of the gate.. straight in your face, Ed’s tight, Wolf and AL are attached at the hip…

Dave is THAT good - you want to try to listen to the music, but Dave just grabs you with the coolest lyrics..

Solo has a Phase 90 VH1 vibe at about 180bpm! Those new EVH III’s sound just fine thankyouverymuch !!!

Stay Frosty

Again you’ve heard it… blues is back.. missus is already singing this one.. “foot’s tappin”.

Dave has 2 verses of an acoustic but hypnotizing swagger, then it kicks in... fun to play and shred along with…

Not my favourite actually, I thought it would be up there, but great fun VH tune… that says a lot about the other tracks… far out it’s ALL GOOD

Band is tight as.. good blues allows individuals to have “their turn”.. and every one gets one… and is it good or WHAT?

Big River

New kind vibe tho… quite fresh… again Wolfie and Al… I’ve not said a lot about Al.. he is everywhere and nowhere.. his snare in magnificent form and I hear sounds of FW/1984 drums in this.. magnificent work Al..

Ed’s solo, bit of wah action.. taps.. blues, then drops a killer riff and run and then ….fark they didn’t miss THAT getting back into the main riff…

Ed plays melody out the outro… that new EVH III sounds real different/ real new but then he manages to pull a kind of Plexi (I have an old one) sound out of it halfway through a run.. kind of blends the 2 amp sounds but not in a Soldano way.. not as compressed but it really sings… must have been a loud recording.. no wonder Ed’s smiling… nice guitar sound.

Beats Workin

Good finisher, Dave is the highlight… Wolf and Dave get an old school VH vibe from the 70’s bootlegs for this.

Al and Ed would have loved hanging out on this one… verses are all theirs.

First part of Solo… old school EVH pentatonic run, bend grab.. lots of room to move.. no meedly meedly – nice work Ed

Wah on the way out… superb

______
Overall

What do I say, I may be a bit biased…but if it was below par I’d say so… Tattoo is unlike the rest and maybe needed to go first.. first on the album and first single IMO..

But I’d not be the first to say if this has not been the best day in the last 20 years…

Stay Frosty...and you need that tune to come down from a highspeed rollercoaster ride so far...now Big River...stumping train...beats working...bringing it home...and YES they could play the whole album and you would have to hold your piss, because there is no chance in hell you make it to the toilet!!!

alright brethren and sistren...I'm not ashamed to say that I write that with a lump in my throat now that I reach the end of the album (for the first of many times today)

there is one that sounds like if they took it from an old recording (beginning of As Is)...but I don't need the scream anymore...it's gone since 1988...

this is so raw...so full of power...no more "why can't this be love comes walking in for breakfast and finish what you started"...it's "we take no prisoners, fuck your girlfriend and destroy not only the fucking hotel room but burn your whole city down"

...and hopefully, that's exactly what he's saying. Just as long as we don't have to wait another 28 years for the next one! Your post reminds me of how that last tune on WACF (officially untitled, but it's come to be known as "Growth") was supposed to be a preview of what the next album would start off with, but by the time Fair Warning was recorded, Eddie came up with the intro to Mean Street, which was much better anyway.

Guitar playing is fire in the belly VH1 stuff.

They should definitely replace ICM with this live...

Hopefully not.... the current North American leg of the tour is only booked through the end of June. That leaves lots of time to hit Europe in the summer. And one would hope they manage to hit Australia, since they would have been the first stop on the tour, had that festival not gone tits up the way it did.

Ok... still 5 days away from actually possessing a Deluxe Version in my hands, so caved and listened to the full versions posted online (specifically the dude with the ADKOT playlist... minus Tattoo - he has Big River as Song #1) ...

HOLY FUCK... what a difference from the clips posted... MONSTROUSLY thicker production and better sounding mix to my ears... Dave is blended perfectly on what I am hearing (which was my big complaint on the short clips as he was WAY too loud) ...

I honestly am speechless as to what I have just listened to ...

Hopefully not.... the current North American leg of the tour is only booked through the end of June. That leaves lots of time to hit Europe in the summer. And one would hope they manage to hit Australia, since they would have been the first stop on the tour, had that festival not gone tits up the way it did.

Shit i would love them to play europe

Just got myself an "early copy" too...but my CD/DVD will arrive on Tuesday.

I will get my copy next Monday morning from Amazon.fr, but couldn't help getting an "early copy", as RIKK said... and... it's just TREMENDOUS!!!!

It's even better than I thought, beyond my expectations that were really high, as VH could not disappoint us...

Like Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, they may have bitched and moaned at each other like a married couple over the years, but together - it just IS THIS: the sum is greater than the parts. Dave always knew it, Ed was in denial during the Van Hagar years, but he knows it in hs bones.

He and Dave ended up together because it always made sense.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/feb/02/van-halen-different-truth-review?newsfeed=true

Hey, Sesh - thanks. The guy who is the editor of the The Guardian for music and film actually LOVES Van Halen. I mean seriously - he's written several pieces (one as recent as January) about how VH are - he says - the second most influential band in rock music after the Beatles. See, e.g.:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/jan/12/van-halen-unchained?newsfeed=true (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/jan/12/van-halen-unchained?newsfeed=true)

He's not the person who wrote this, but not suprised they'd get a positive notice from The Guardian - but good all the same. It might help non-fans pick up on this, which can only be good.

If the band's PR can make the most of this kind of positive support, it might bode well for generating interest in a UK tour ... !

Yeah it's mainly about the beat coming from Dave's more catholic tastes.

This has been posted elsewhere in the forum but to make the point a bit clearer.

Not sure why you guys rag on 1984 so much. It's an amazing album with phenomenal production. And somehow it went completely mainstream, but maybe that's the problem?

Diver Down, on the other hand, is by far the weakest release. The production is not good (muddy, no instrument separation, no low end, drums sound terrible), too much filler and there's no intensity. Little Guitars is a top 5 all time fav, but one song can't save an album. I really wish they used the Last Night vocal melodies on Hang Em High, but the song is still great. Other than those two songs, the album does little for me.

Glad to see you got in there to reply to that bozo.

Well, down here in Australia...

Last night, after a long discussion with my good mate ashstralia at stroke of midnight (mainly having good laughs and drinks over singing WARF's "Tattoo" song to ELVIS in The Dump thread), I resisted temptation to download the album and went straight to store next day...

I just finished listening to it, and without going into any nitty-gritty details over each individual track...I'll simply say that it's close to FAIR WARNING more than the others...

Folks, IT ROCKS!!!!

I guess that was around the time when his solo career was at an all time low. Ya know, I don't think Ed would have teamed up with Dave again unless he really needed to. I think after going through Hagar and Cherone he had to give old Dave a call again. The funny thing is there is no doubt Eddie was in denial in regards to Dave's legacy in the band. I remember when Hagar joined they have lots of people fooled that it was still Van Halen but I never bought that crap.

Hard to say. I have been listening to them all non stop. But I do know so far that:

Bullethead: Grabs you by the balls! just a great powerful rocker!
You And Your Blues: Has an insane catchy hook.
HBSD: So strange and I cant stop replaying this one. Edward is doing some different kind of runs in the end. Almost RR sounding. Fucking love it!!
Beats Workin: OMFG! Classic sounding Halen. Has a "Feel You Love" Vibe on the chores and that bass riff before and during solo. Epic. That part reminds me of DDL ending.

ALBUM. OF. THE. DECADE.

NO LESS.

When that CD arrives tuesday, it's getting ripped and then finding a permanent home in my car's cd changer!

I can honestly say that for the first time in such a long time that I am actually experiencing JOY.

The way dave sings in You and Your Blues is fucking amazing.

Cant say ive ever felt this good about spending money on a CD in my LIFE. The last time I was this excited, I was 13 and receiving a big ass PEAVEY amp for xmas.

Time for an analogy...and a story..

long time ago I had a nifty little car.. it was a Shelby CSX - a turbo DODGE. Nice little hatchback. I had a gigantic intercooler in that thing and beefy injectors; stuffed 22 PSI into that 2.2L. One day while returning from the beach with my (then) girlfriend, we came to a stop light and lo and behold, a staunchy looking old guy in a Honda S2000 with a chick lookin young enough to be his grandaugther riding shotgun. Light turns green and he guns it.. no contest. I blew his fucking doors off.

He spent the rest of the trip alongside me well, not really alongside as much as maintaining a FAR distance.

This album is a sleeper. Who could have possibly expected these washed up hacks to produce this FUCKING STELLAR MASTERPIECE? If I were spambo I'd just crawl under a fucking ROCK because he's been RUINED.

Say what you will about the Vegas trip, the state fairs, the radio show, and every other left-hand turn he made with his career. The entire time he was away from Van Halen, the guy kept working his ass off and keeping his name out there. You never had to wonder where he was or what he was up to for too long, especially when the summertime came around. He always had something going.
He was going to keep fighting until the Dutchies finally came to their senses, no matter how fucking long it was gonna take.

When he says "told ya' I was comin' back", it's impossible not to raise your glass and salute that.

I think his only low for me was his Filthy Mouth tour. The band was lame in so many ways !! Dave forgot who he was !! I did like some of that album. Hell even in his book he admited it wasn't his best. I don't mind he tried the Vegas thing. He had balls doing that. His look was stupid. I remember him on Jay Leno going really ?? Hell Ed said the same thing and brought him in for the 96 tunes so that was a good move on Ed's part for Dave. His band with Brian Young was fantastic just before the VH reunion.

Man, the whole album kicks ass but HoneyBaby just has this thing to it that I haven't been able to really find the right words for yet.....Just so powerful and cosmic....I think people just have to hear it to really understand the feel of that particular tune. Really catches you off guard and kicks your ass untill it ends....definitely a dark tune...I don't know why, it certainly doesn't have the same pace or beat but it reminds me of One Foot Out The Door.

Hey, I love the fucking heavy songs so fucking much...

But having had Blood and Fire for quite a few days on my computer and iphone...I dunno man...

That song is so fucking good it brings tears to my eyes at times...

Dave is so fucking strong that you totally forget it's that Ripley song underneath...

:elvis:

It's not just that for me it really brought home what a fucking amazing song writer he is.

For him to take that music and come up with that vocal melody is close to genius.

Man, the whole album kicks ass but HoneyBaby just has this thing to it that I haven't been able to really find the right words for yet.....Just so powerful and cosmic....I think people just have to hear it to really understand the feel of that particular tune. Really catches you off guard and kicks your ass untill it ends....definitely a dark tune...I don't know why, it certainly doesn't have the same pace or beat but it reminds me of One Foot Out The Door.

i'm on my 4th listen... HBSD seems to be tuned down to C, and there's lots of weird phrygian dominant/harmonic minor going on with an octaver.

for the muso's :)

Nobody is cooler than Dave led Van Halen.

Is it me, or at the end of the solo in "Blood and Fire" does Dave yell "Hollaback"?

I feel you on this one bro....I absolutely enjoyed every tune for different reasons. Blood And Fire just feels and sounds like what we were suppsed to hear after 1984....kinda takes you back mentally to that point in your life...IMO anyway....definitely brings on some emotion listening to it....that's a tune you can easily hear getting regular radio aiplay along side CVH tunes we have been hearing on the radio for the last 30 + years.

Y'know I always wondered if some of Ed's problems on the 2007-8 tour had to do with the songs being tuned down for Dave's voice. Anybody else have thoughts on that?

No, not at all...

Ed was fresh out of rehab following a multi-year drug and alcohol binge (been there done that).

Now that Ed has been clean and sober he's ON FIRE !!!!!!!

:gulp:

I'm struggling through the process at the moment, with us throwing out 5 for every one we keep which is how it should be.

It's always struck me how ridiculous it is that most hard rock band people spend hundreds of hours on the 10 seconds of the guitar solo and 5 minutes on the vocal melody which is pretty much is all that matters.

Chickenshit for example.

No that is a complete myth going back to 5150.

When Roth left one of the stupid quotes that came out, from Alex and Eddie was that tuning down a step for Roth caused Ed a problem because it made the strings slack.

I've posted before about this. There are a few reasons it annoyed me.

1) It treated the Van Halen fan base as morons. A third of any Van Halen crowd played guitar and knew that was a nonsense.
2) Many many bands tune down not for vocal reasons which it doesn't make much difference to but to sound heavier.
3) EEAS wasn't tuned down.
4) 5150 was.

Ludicrous.
