View Full Version : The next album

It's inevitable.

They get along well enough to record an album and tour (or their management is smart enough to have them interact for just long enough before murder).

The album is being received well and is going to sell a ton.

The concerts are doing brisk business.

The press is hip to the "reunion".

There's millions of $$$ to be made and I think Dave and the VH brothers know that this is the last chance to hit paydirt.

How long before the next album?

I don't think we'll see a second one that's like ADKOT. I just don't see them being in that 'turn them out' mode. If anything, I see them doing something mellow in maybe 2-3 years...

I hope there is more to come, but nearly anything could happen with this band. It only took my entire lifetime (+ a few years) to get the follow up to 1984. I'm just going to enjoy the hell out of this one before worrying too much about what is next. I sure hope you are right though!

Well the outro to Beat's Worken, SEEMS, Like an ending to another begining, I Guess. Shit, What do I know. I can see a follow up. Maybe a vault album, Like the Stones did. Eddie has tons of shit hidden somewhere.

In a way, they kinda did open the vaults up by recording/reworking unreleased (but not unheard) songs on this album. Hopefully, we'll at least get a true vault set at some point after this.

I would absolutely agree about that a follow up would be every bit of 3 years away and considerably more mellow. I'd be OK with more mellow. Don't get me wrong, I love that this new CD is ripping my face off daily, but I'd also enjoy some tunes in the gears of Drop Dead Legs or Secrets. Dave'll be starting his 60's. Stay While The Night Is Young mellow would suit him, them, just fine.
One thing I'd love to see them do, but unfortunately, this idea would work best with Mike in the fold, is a double CD of 20 or so of their favorite club days covers. There are so many that they completely owned. "I checked the songs for dancability" -Dave. He sure did. I could see the smokin early 1970's honeys shakin their asses to those tunes. I would love to hear them do Tommy Bolin's The Grind and Edgar Winter Group's We All had A Real Good Time. So many others.

If Eddie can kick his addiction habit (and I truly hope he can, not just for the music but for his own life) which he is working hard at, I do not see how he can could stand around with this new creative energy in him and not do it on a platform that will get the most attention...that is Van Halen. There is no other option open to Van Halen except for Roth as a singer. Sammy's day is long gone, too much baggage to go into it all over again with another singer as they did with Roth and make peace. I think we can see at least two more studio lps past this, another hard one and then a mellow one. I would not be surprised to see Michael Anthony back in the mix after Wolfgang will want to go out on his own with a younger band eventually. Chickenfoot's days are numbered and Michael will not stay within the limitations of a Hagar career. Satriani? This Chickenfoot stuff has killed what he excels at, solo instrumental compositions. Joe in Chickenfoot has become no more than your average good guitarist but nothing great out of his instrumental element.

Now I have to travel to your home with Cerwin, Vega, and Van Halen's A Different Kind of Truth to personally show you how full your hands are with what you got.

I'll take ADKOT and be happy. If there is another album after this, I'm sure it will be because they had a great tour and were inspired to make new music. If they get that far, I would love to see MA come back. As a bass player, I totally miss his playing and backing vocals on this new album.

Wouldn't happen but.. I would love to hear Eddie, Dave and co put out a disc with a blues spin to it. Delta blues with a VH shine to it. Man, with Daves vocal style it would sound killer! You can hear hints at what it could sound like when Eddie and Dave do that guitar, voice dual bit live.

As for MA coming back, I don't see it happening. And if he did, they would have to drop ADKOT tunes from the set list. He couldn't play em' the way wolf has ;) And after all these years of waitin' for this disc, as far as i'm concerned. Those tunes damn well better stay on the list (and played the way they are on the disc) for the foreseeable future.

I'd be perfectly happy with ADKOT being their swan song - they delivered the album we've all been waiting for and have redeemed themselves for 15 years of mediocrity. IF they should decide to record another album down the road - I think they would have to wait. For big rock acts, you can't churn them out year after year anymore and still expect to tour in support of them. Back in the glory days it worked, because tickets were only $12.50. Now you're oversaturated in the rock market if you tour more than once every other year (or three years). They could choose to tour next year playing smaller venues - but that's the Chickenfoot route - the wrong move for the mighty =VH=. Better to wait - just not too long - they're not getting any younger (although you would never guess it from the new disk!)

Conspiracy Theory #267474577508239855

Wolfgang sprouts his own wings...hooks up with friends (Tremonti for example) and "leaves" Van Halen to do his own thing....

Mike returns to the band as Chickenshit has been put out to pasture...

They do 1...1 tour with the original line-up...

the end...

ADKOT is the final chapter...
And what a great way to respect the legacy and please us bastards after all this time.
I dont expect a follow up, unless its leftovers from ADKOT.
As for the MA theory, they should do at least one last show with him.
Wolf may even suggest it ?

He has to get his face out of Hagars ass for all to see, for this to
even have a chance.
Miniscule chance, but thats the trouble with never.

Um, yea....I'm going to continue to listen the piss out of ADKOT....whatever happens after that......so be it. Never know....there's always Honolulu Baby, Young and Wild, Wild Fire, Piece of Mind....etc laying around. They obviously got their creative juices flowing cuz the brand new tunes are amazing. For me...it's kind of like when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup in '94. Never thought I would see it, might not ever see it again....so enjoy what we have NOW.

What kind of deal do they have exactly? Is it short term? Multiple releases? Does it include the possibility to release "vault" items? It is, ofcoarse, way too early to have this discussion, but I just can't imagine that this album and tour is one big going away party. I can see less touring in their future, but to stop making music after this makes no sense. Cheap Trick (my go-to barometer) has a few years on them and they ain't bagging it. I agree that we need to soak up and enjoy this moment, cause who knows what the future holds, especially with these guys, but there is no way, in my opinion, a chance that this band will just walk away after this.

Anything is possible in Halenville though. For the next album I wouldn't be surprised to see Mikey back on bass, Wolfie on drums, Jimmy Barnes on vocals and Eddie somewhere between rehab and the moon. But I certainly don't wish that upon the band. Yeah, ADKOT is the perfect swan song.

If they ever record another one, I think it would be less tight than ADKOT, as the latter is tight as "Fair Warning' is for example,
so the next one would probably be more "loose", like "Diver Down" if I can compare...

Well, who knows, really?

But ADKOT is so well filled, bulit and recorded that it would be a challenge to release another one that could tally it.

A follow up it's literally innevitable. And if Ed wants to make the best move of his business career... he'll open the vault with TONS of footage unrelased... come on who wouldn't love to see Oakland '81? Or listen to Van Halen's follow up album with Cherone? there's definetely an album coming up. But I believe Ed needs to sell the unreleased shit first, and THEN (in 2 years or so) release a new album! (hoping they add We Die Bold).

I recall reading somewhere that when Ed sat down with Shanks to start the process for determining where to go with what became ADKOT... they were up at 5150 and Ed had a storage room off the main studio with over 200 reels of 2" tapes with jams and various scratch recordings. Sounds as if quite a bit of "archival" stuff is there... probably a fair amount of crap too...

We know half the new record came from the old demo songs... I still got to wonder what, if anything came from the 2000 Roth sessions?

Also... Wolfgang jams and hangs around punks closer to his age. What's to say "the kid" doesn't compose some stuff that inspires the old man..?

I wonder if he didn't already. Shortly after Ed communicates with dolphins in the beginning of Honeybabysweetiedoll, the bass kicks in with that bwomp bwomp bwomp bwomp bwom. That eventually becomes the overall underlying rhythm. It's a bit un-Ed like. Perhaps the youngest of 3 twins pitched it.

As far as another album goes, one never knows. Eddie and Alex are so fickle...but as someone pointed out, Wolf is the catalyst in this band. He guides his Dad and keeps him focused, which is great, because Eddie hasn't played this well in years. All I know is this, if they do another record it had better be with Dave. Some moron said on Ultimate Guitar (or one of those type of sites) that Daves voice was shot, and Sammys wasnt, to which I replied that I would rather see VH live with Dave doing sign language than to hear that idiot try to sing with VH any day of the week. Hagar makes Eddie's songwriting weak and bland. And when Eddie does write something thats got a bit of stomp to it, Hagar ruins it with some retarded lyrical rant about Love or what he wants to eat. Example: Source of Infection has got to be one of the lamest lyrical/vocal treatments of all time. And thats one of many...Up For Breakfast musically could have been a good tune with Dave, Sammy made it horrible...OK Im sorry that I even brought up that waste of skin...heres to hoping for another album with Dave, or at the very least a live album from the 2012 tour.

I think Ed's genuinely thrilled to play with Wolf, and after hearing the bass KILLING IT on the record I can see why. As for Dave, Dave has ALWAYS brought Ed up, like the hero that drags the friend into danger severe enough that the friend too has to be supremely on point to rise to the occasion. Add Wolf's perspective of being able to enjoy many bands and new technology, and yet his instant meshing with his own musical family...I think for Ed it is an extension of the way seeing his boys made Jan feel. No doubt no one's perfect, but Wolf's addition is a deep thing to Ed.

Dave brought his hero's A-game with those lyrics and performance. Everyone knows. And watching the video where Dave interviews the brothers was a cool thing. I think they know another album will make more money, especially after a great one we just got. Even more though, I myself never tire of hearing my bandmate's new song ideas, or revamping a rough version of some really cool song we had lying dormant. Nothing is that fun. They want that fun most of all. The three will jam a ton, and Dave will own the songs again. I hope next time the fellas make a record that might be heavy or softer, but is even more outside than this amazing album is.

I just don't get how this doesn't continue and fruitfully so. Hell, after hearing how uplifting feeling Me Wise Magic was compared to the mediocrity of the Spam years, I just don't get how Ed & Al went a third way to a "straining to sing" guy from Baaaston. Sorry Extreme and all other rock bands...I can't see your stars when the sun is burning my eyes.

I'm absolutely blown away by the new album, and I'm so happy for the fellas. I listen to a lot of different music, but Roth VH is the only band that even matters when they come out of hibernation. Been that way for a long, long year.
