NOISECREEP: Top 10 New-School Hair Metal Bands

Anybody else see this list? Anybody hear any of these bands? I am really digging some of it, some not so much. Listening to Lynam and Bad City tonight, definitely about to buy some Last Vegas and check that out. I can't get down with the vocals on the Black Veil Brides stuff, though some of the music is ok.

I am really into this type of music from the 1980's and I am pretty hyped to see either bands from the era making new music of new bands influenced by VH, Motley, Def Lep, Ratt, ect.

The Black Veil Brides are a lot of fun if you don't take it too seriously. Kinda like a hair metal version of My Chemical Romance, pop-meets-hard-rock.

Steel Panther are both very funny and write good songs. The novelty wears off quickly for me, but I understand why people love 'em.

On that list, however, Hardcore Superstar are the band to check out. Dirty, good time, rock 'n' roll.

        .
Their music is great! But yeah, all novelty. If they actually took it serious I could listen to it. Otherwise it's just a comedy cd. Only so many times I can play my Richard Prior album before the jokes get old.

I don't give a shit about hair. IMO a metal/hard rock band hasn't earned its reputation until parents forbid their kids to listen to them (while the said kids hide the albums from their parents) or christian fundies picket their concerts.

Don't they all eventually? Surprised no one mentions his chest hair (or lack thereof nowadays)

OK, well plenty of those 80's bands, especially Motley Crue, had the protests going back in the day just like KISS did before them. I'll never forget (and still have the newpaper article) the nutbags having some sort of a meeting with the city government protesting KISS before a concert in Biloxi, MS and Paul Stanley showed up, heard their lame assed arguments about why KISS shouldn't be allowed to play a concert in a free country, showed them there were no horns under his (then real) hair, shook hands, kissed babies and left. It was brilliant.

I never had to hide any albums from my parents growing up (although dudes wearing women's makeup made me want to), mom was a big Elvis fan since she was young and dad loved Jerry Lee Lewis, AKA Satan Himself.

I only made mention of Van Halen because they were an undeniable influence on that genre of music, especially Ed's playing. Also the success of Van Halen led record companies to take a look at the music scene and the bands playing the Sunset Strip.

I will check out Hardcore Superstar further based on the reviews above. I bought some songs by The Last Vegas on I-tunes last night and love them. They have a really nice (early)Guns and Roses/LA Guns/Dangerous Toys/Junkyard type of a vibe going. "Whatever Gets You Off" is by far not their best song IMO.

I went out last night and saw band #5 on the list, Lynam. They played a great show with a lot of enthusiasm for a less than packed house. They played a mix of originals and cover tunes, including a couple of Van Halen songs. The lead singer and guitarist, Jacob Bunton, was clearly a Van Halen fan at one point playing a little Eruption during a break in which the bass player (Cody Elliott) had some sort of difficulty. After the show the guys were very cool, hanging out and talking for a few minutes, so I had to ask Jacob The Question: "Clearly Eddie Van Halen is an influence on you, so have you heard the new Van Halen album and what do you think of it?" He said that yes, Ed was a huge influence and that he was a huge fan as well. He said that all the guys in the band absolutely LOVED ADKOT and that they had all been listening to it quite a bit since it came out, which I thought was pretty cool.
