Sarkozy announces crackdown on Internet hate sites

PARIS | Thu Mar 22, 2012 8:50am EDT
(Reuters) - President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Thursday that France would make it a crime to consult Web sites that advocate terrorism or hate crimes and would toughen a crackdown on people who went abroad for ideological indoctrination.

"From now on, any person who habitually consults Web sites that advocate terrorism or that call for hatred and violence will be criminally punished," Sarkozy said in a televised address after police shot dead an al Qaeda-inspired gunman who had killed seven people.

"France will not tolerate forced recruitment or ideological indoctrination on its soil," Sarkozy said, adding that an enquiry would be launched into whether prisons were being used to propagate extremism in France.

He said authorities were investigating whether Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman of Algerian origin, acted alone in the shootings of three Jewish children and four adults in southwest France.

Merah died on Wednesday in a hail of bullets when he jumped from a window after elite police commandos entered the apartment where he was holed up following a siege of more than 30 hours.

I suspect it's the european version of SOPA ... the governments want control of the internet. They are just trying to figure out how to sell it in a way the people will accept.

This is another reactionary law much like the California three strikes. Gov't introduce a new law in response to a horrible crime, and the people back the law without thinking it through.

COULD it happen? Absolutely. All the legislation to make it happen is already in place.

In the US we have our rights documented. You have all these goons in the congress and in the executive branch passing laws and executive orders that take away those rights. So two things have happened here. Either our governmnet has turned into something else or the law makers are committing treason. I say it's the latter. As they try to grab more and more power and take more rights away there are all sorts of oath keeper organizations poping up. Members of the military and government saying they are going to honor their oath they swore to the constiution. This is even at the county level. States are passing sovergnty acts saying any federal laws passed aren't valid unless ratified by that state's constitution. So the fight is on. We are at a spot in the US we haven't been since the civil war thanks to power hungery and nutcase politicians thinking they are above the law and don't have to answer to the citizens.
