Tax Policies for the Rich Thread

Under Paul Ryan’s Plan, Mitt Romney Would Pay Virtually No Taxes
    Benjy Sarlin August 11, 2012, 7:26 PM 6826

Democrats have speculated that Mitt Romney might have paid little to no taxes in the years covered in his unreleased tax returns. If Paul Ryan had his way, they’d be right.

Romney’s new running mate proposed eliminating the capital gains tax in his 2010 “Roadmap for America’s Future.” Since Romney, like many ultra-wealthy Americans, derives virtually all of his income from investments, he would pay virtually no taxes at all under such a plan.

The Atlantic crunched the numbers on Romney’s 2010 tax returns, the only one he’s made public, and found that Romney’s tax rate that year would be just 0.82 percent under Ryan’s proposal.

Romney went out of his way during the campaign to avoid proposing any capital gains tax cuts that would benefit him personally, keenly aware that his investment fortune made him an easy target for Democrats. He did propose tax cuts on investment income, but said they would be restricted only to middle-class savings, leaving his own vast holdings unaffected.

The capital gains issue came up during the primaries when Romney attacked Newt Gingrich’s tax plan by noting it would reduce his own tax burden to 0 percent:

“Under that plan, I’d have paid no taxes in the last two years,” Romney said in a January debate, referring to its elimination of taxes on investment.

Ryan also may have recognized the political difficulties behind his idea. While his 2010 proposal put him on the political map, he chose not to zero out capital gains in his House budget.

Given Democratic enthusiasm for Romney’s personal finances and President Obama’s focus on tax fairness, Ryan’s earlier capital gains pitch is likely to rear its head on the trail.

This thread is in honor of dummies like BigBadBrian who've been fooled to vote against their own self interests while worrying about the socialist tax policies in countries like France while they take it in the ass here at home...

I will be heading off to Singapore tomorrow. The maximum tax rate there is 20%. The place seems to be doing fine. Europe and North America just wasted their money on stupid shit. Like it or not the new world economic powerhouse is in Asia. I think we blew it. BRICS is going to sink the US Dollar and the Euro is toast. Who cares what the tax rates are when your money becomes worthless?

The people who need economics lessons, would be anybody who believes the economic policies of the last 30 years have worked for anybody other than the criminal 1%.

The last 40 years. Yup the middle class got tossed under the bus. We have two forms of welfare in the US. Welfare for the people who lost their legitimate jobs due to outsourcing. Face it, many people live better on welfare than if they went out and got a job. Then we have welfare for the rich which is the government covers your speculation losses.

I think it's going to hit the fan in the next four years no matter who is elected. My advice is find a nice safe spot to wait the storm out.

I say keep all use taxes in place (gas, booze, tobacco, etc.).

Have all individual taxpayers pay a straight 10 percent income tax right off the top. No deductions. Then nobody can bitch about who pays more or less. And they all get to keep 90%.
So what if wealthy individuals pay more as far as dollar amount. The percentage is the same as po' folks. No discrimination against rich or poor...everyone pays 10%.

Secondly, have all corporations pay 10 percent of their gross revenue in corporate income tax, straight off the top, no deductions. That way nobody can bitch the corporations are not paying income tax. And the corporations still get to keep 90%.

And thirdly, tax all churches and businesses owned by churches or other religious organizations. 10 percent. Straight off the top. No deductions. If they bitch, tell them to go read their fairy tale Bible about "tithing". If they are not Christian, too bad. 10% straight off the top. No deductions.

I don't pretend to be an economic guru. But seems to me the above would be enough to pay off the national debt much faster than we are doing so now.

The problem with that VA, is all current Repukes stick their fingers in their ears and go "LALALALALALLALALALALA" when you remind them that Reagan was for tax fairness.

Only in the US can you be in the "top bracket" and end up paying 14% like Mittens.

Will you be posting from Singapore? At least 20% of the time?
