So I'm at work listening to WMMR double shot Tuesday. First song is Dreams, second song comes on with the roaring riff of ATBL totally destroying that pop crap!! Once again easily to hear the power with Dave!! Made the rest of my day.
What a definite contrast!

It's interesting if you can think yourself back into 1986, when you heard '5150' and 'Eat 'Em and Smile'. I know what I thought - EEAS sounds like Van Halen, the other one sounds like a band trying to be Van Halen.
That, my friends, is very instructive, because I was not the only one to think it. When we say at Roth Army 'Dave is VH', yeah it's a bit of bravado etc., but really you simply do not have what we understand as Van Halen without David Lee Roth.
It is an undisputable fact.THINK LIKE THE WAVESComment

It is an undisputable fact."Ya know what they say about angels... An angel is a supernatural being or spirit, usually humanoid in form, found in various religions and mythologies. Plus Roth fan boards..."- ZahZoo April 2013Comment

I thought, by Why Can't This Be Love, that they were a band no longer trying to sound like Van Halen. I agree with 78/84 guy. A band name change would have been the right thing to do, especially since the venture with Hagar was intended to be a departure. It also would have opened the doors much quicker for a DLR return, had Van Hagar been a band with a new name. Under a new moniker, it could have been received as a one off project. One where by the masses would have said, "ok now that you got that out of your system, can we have our original band back please?".Comment

True, they were done, but don't forget, it was Jump that first aligned the band with that ilk.Comment

I'm trying to think of the songs Dave was working on with VH in 85 before he left. "Eat Thy Neighbor" (supposedly turned in to Summer Nights) and I heard that what turned out to be Dreams was worked on with Dave as well...there's one more that I can't remember off the top of my head. Didn't Dave describe the music that Ed was presenting to him as "morose"?
The interesting thing about Summer Nights is, even though in the hands of Hagar it is utter crap, musically it is the closest Van Hagar came to capturing the CVH vibe. It has Dave's fingerprints all over it. Makes me wonder how much of Dave's original melody they used (if that song, as legend says, started out as Eat Thy Neighbor)Comment

I remember being 15 and hearing "Good Enough" for the first time ---- Spamborita starts in with those genius lyrics ---- "She's US Prime, Grade A guaranteed, grease her up and turn on the heat".
I cried on the inside ---- I knew the real Van Halen had died and been replaced by Night Ranger.
