I'm thinking of getting one of these

    No, not one of those:

    One of these:

    Western Digital Live Hub

Apparently, it's a hard drive that you can "interface" with your TV and AV receiver to play your music on or, in many of your cases, your porn. Still, they are a wee bit expensive but do any one of you have this? And if so, how has it worked out for you thus far? Is it worth the investment?

I know the older WD Live boxes used the Realtek 1073 processor. I don't have that brand, but I have another box that uses the same processor. It's great for playing about 99% of media formats, whether you stream it from another PC on the network, or store it locally on the hard drive (not all of these devices come with a built in hard drive. I had to add mine separately)

The one thing my box does NOT do well is internet content, but that's more the fault of the crappy operating system than it is the network connection. If this WD is a newer product than it might be running an Intel Atom processor, in which case there might be a more advanced OS that can actually handle Netflix/Hulu and other such online content.

But if you're going to spend close to $200 on such a device, you might as well hold out for a video game system, because all the modern game boxes (Wii/Playstation/X Box) will do all this AND play games & BluRay movies too. Or if you're not a gamer at all, even most BluRay players now include network/internet functionality.

I have a Blu-Ray that already does that lame internet streaming (which I never use). I was looking for something to simply play MP3's back on (if that makes sense). From what I've read about this unit, it has/had some problems with random play and functionality of various video formats which, as Western Digital states, has been worked out due to software updates. Seems for MP3 playback, you can run it via HDMI (for the drive was meant to be used 24 hours/day) with MPCM audio (like a Blu-Ray) and can enjoy your music files without the hassle of plugging in a iPod or some lame MP3 player that already sounds like shit in the first place.

It can be used for video storage for personal vids, but as far as movie playback, I'd still opt for a Blu-Ray/DVD. I'm currently waiting for them to drop a bit in price. Near $200 seems ridiculous for what it really does.

I have a Mac Mini I use in a similar fashion. It was a computer from work we no longer were using so I just use it basically as a multimedia box. What's nice is you can just grab it and take your whole collection of stuff with you and hook it into the television in the hotel room or wherever.
