SHOW NOTES:
Adam opens the show with David Lee Roth in studio. They talk about the beginnings of Van Halen, and why station programmers don’t know anything about good music. Adam also asks David about his childhood and talks to him about the infamous brown M&M rider. They also discuss replacing Howard Stern, breaking into the radio business, and all the odd things that are forced on-air because of format.

This is just fucking awesome! This thread should be stickied, not only because it's recent, but because it's relevant! But I'm not a bartender at this joint.

This was one of Dave's coolest interviews. I don't want to even call it an 'interview' as much as I want to call it an intelligent discussion between two hardline personalities.

THIS is good radio!!

I maintain that Roth's radio show would've been a much bigger hit if he had the West Coast spot, and Carolla the East Coast. I never understood that....to this day.

Still...this is fuckin' awesome!

One for the books!

I like how these days Roth actually answers questions.

Interesting that he is much more comfortable talking about the death and divorce of his parents than Michael Anthony... :)

Some great stuff, but so much nonsense infused. I keep hoping for better questions but Adam has to focus on his brand of comedy.

Dave was surely having a blast. His gaspy smokers laugh always concerns me, especially as singing time draws nearer. Our guy really needs to talk less and drink more tea with honey, stat!

Apparently eventually the whole show is gonna be on Adam's Youtube channel, here's the link, not there yet...

He's really bad IMO...

His voice would be irritating as fuck in Hell...

Adam Corolla is definitely annoying.

Pretty much. He's funny at times but just irratic and the show just flops around with silly, sidebar discussions. I mean, you got David Lee Fucking Roth on your show and you let your unfunny female sidekick run with a bit about unclean public women's restrooms!? FFS

Corolla doesn't have a radio job. It's internet only. Didn't you hear the F-bomb? Can't do that on the radio.

No rating on podcasts, either.

We learned about Dave's parents and why they divorced and I never heard him talk about that topic before, and we also got more insight into the failed radio gig --- but the Carolla rambling in the second half was just another boring radio douche who likes to hear himself talk.

Yeah, I don't think I actually knew about the divorce. Did he mention that in his book?

This Carolla guy could have turned in a decent interview, but once he started with the banal, "who's a bigger nut job, Axl or Eddie?" type shit, he blew it. He also has the arrogant tendency to make all of his questions set ups for talking about himself. Yay, I'm so glad I got to hear Dave listen to Adam explain why he wanted kids.

I knew a doctor that had a voice like Adam Carollas. Could you imagine hearing the snap of rubber gloves and then that voice telling you to drop trunks and bend over the examination table?

Actually the last part of the interview was much like that.

No rating on podcasts, either.

There are a couple of C-bombs in there too if you listen closely.

The format is half interview and then they go on to talk among themselves about the news or whatever. They asked Dave to stay on to comment for the second half which often they don't do.

I don't know about ratings but he does regularly get pretty reasonable guests comics and actors maybe B+ level celebs.

I only listen when it's someone I know so that's about one in eight.

I've always got the impression that Corolla was doing pretty well with the podcast thing which is why Dave will have gone there to sell the Roth Show.

I had a quick look and

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/why-podcasts-are-comedys-second-241769

During the past two years, while the radio industry has obsessed over formats and a flawed ratings system that often fails to accurately gauge audience numbers or demographics, podcasts of the comedic variety have flourished. Adam Carolla and Marc Maron lead the pack, following the pioneering path cleared by Kevin Smith, Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Pardo.
The numbers tell the story: Carolla, who bid farewell to 15 markets when his syndicated CBS Radio morning show was canceled in 2009, has amassed an audience 10 times as big with his daily podcast. The Adam Carolla Show has logged more than 50 million downloads in a year; Maron's twice-weekly WTF is at 20 million and counting. Both are offered for free, while archived episodes (like Maron's intense 2010 interview with Robin Williams) cost $1.99 at iTunes (no money changes hands between the programs and Apple, but server space is the responsibility of show producers and can get pricey at about $10,000 a month). Cash starts flowing when listenership hits certain benchmarks and advertisers come calling, which, according to Carolla, they have -- big time.

Yeah, had he eased into radio differently, it could've worked. NYC was determined to dislike whomever replaced their beloved Howard. I'll never get that.

I still remember seeing the buses in midtown with long posters along the side with a cool picture of Dave holding his jacket open revealing a crazy colorful lining and the poster simply read, "Run with the devil". Wish I could've scored on of those.

Dave has the laugh of a multi-millionaire rock legend who doesn't need to work another day in his life and still has 19 yr. old strippers giving him blowjobs whenever he gets the tingly urge in his undies.

Carolla's laugh is that of a no-talent douchebag who's career is going down the shitter because his only outlet is obscure podcasts that a few hundred people listen to (and dwindling).

It seems a little strange to say it --- but Dave isn't as raunchy as Stern and that's one big reason it failed. Stern likes to get female celebrities on his show and ask them things like "What color panties you wearing today?" and "How many times do you blow your boyfriend every week?". Dave steers away from that kind of stuff and Stern's former audience tuned out quickly.

They didn't book the guests on anyway.

It was nuts, incompetence or conspiracy but they gave him a handful of pretty mediocre guests to get him through 40 hours of live radio. My instinct is that it was incompetence at CBS.

Roth made plenty of mistakes too but the show could have worked if it was much more like his previous stint in Boston and/or they had 2 or 3 decent guests on every day.

I'm sure Roth was genuinely very entertained by Corolla's chat on the dumbness of American morning radio today even if some of you weren't.

my favorite part is when Adam brought up Sammy Hagar briefly. It wasn't so much that Dave decided not to comment (which was cool), it was how Adam described him, "God Forbid Sammy Hagar."
