I don't know if it necessarily has to be "free" but it shouldn't be fucking $60/month. Or worse than that, for a wireless data plan.

When Al Gore called it the "information superhighway", he made a valid point - It's part of the national infrastructure just like the Interstate highway system is. And those shouldn't be privatized either.

The internet actually is separate pieces working together. Your internet provider only provides a piece of the system. If you live in a more populated area you have more choices of how to access the internet. In a smaller community you have less choices. That is the same with everything. Auto parts and groceries usually cost more in a small town because there are less choices available.

The beauty of the internet is nobody controls it. The politicians are desperately trying to change that because they don't like something they don't control exposing their dirty laundry. I think the internet is better being private and not public because public really means it's going to be controlled by bureaucrats in some government agency the public really has no control over. Since the corporations own the government now anyways, you aren't going to gain a thing. They probably will award the government contract to Comcast and we all will suffer then.

Funny. When the government owns everything the go getters start to leave. So many leave the government builds a wall to keep them in. Outside the wall there is better innovation, more freedom, and a chance for a better standard of living. Inside the wall there is a police state, a lack of innovation, a lack of motivation, and a low standard of living unless you are in charge.

It's called North Korea or East Germany. Honestly. Some people still don't get it. It's not a perfect world. Capitalism is not perfect but usually the government owning everything is historically a worse program. The 20th century proved Marxism does not work. It goes broke in the end. Look at southern Europe. They no longer can afford their socialist programs. All it's done is made the population lazy and broke the treasury.

I heard this whole argument when they were trying to pass Obamacare. Socialists in the US still believe if we give the government more power over our lives, it will create a utopia. No. You just give a bunch of control freaks more power. Maybe if Jesus Christ or Budda ran the government things would be different but we have a government right now that doesn't even function unless of course, it's about stealing someone's money, weapons dealing, starting wars, and stomping on anyone who rocks the boat. The government can't even handle the power it already has. I don't want to give it more power.

North Korea isn't the best example for this thread, SOUTH Korea is.....

People in the United States basically invented the Internet. So U.S. connections must be the fastest and cheapest in the world, right?

As for privatizing public infrastructure being a BAD idea, I can prove that case with one word....

                ENRON.

That kind of bullshit never would have happened with public owned utilities. Which is what all utilities should be. And all infrastructure. And education. And healthcare. And energy.... ESPECIALLY fucking energy.

Some things simply should not be for profit.

I'd be scared if the government had more power over our internet. They would almost certainly put the smack down on people digging for certain types of information.

I'm not suggesting that there should be a "Federal Department of the Internet" agency controlling the whole thing.

Think of it more like the Interstate Highway System. It was a necessary infrastructure built by Federal dollars, but the everyday maintenance and control of it is in state hands. In the case of the internet, it could even be on the local level. And should be a utility just like your gas, electricity or water system. (and if those are privatized, they shouldn't be either)

The internet, by definition, shouldn't be controlled by any country.
