The whole liberal and conservative thing is just a political charade. I'm amazed people still fall for it because it's obvious now. Bush and Obama have ran the same agenda, so I guess parties no longer matter. There are two kinds of people. Crooks and those who are honest. Both political parties seem to be sorely lacking in the latter.

Well, this example illustrates exactly how the KKKochs, FAUX Noize, and hate radio have brainwashed millions of people into believing that it's somehow "socialist", "liberal" or "communist" to give a shit about the only planet you have the option of living on.

Not that CFL bulbs are perfect either, they do contain mercury, and are technically considered "hazardous materials" when being disposed of. But they burn much slower than regular bulbs, and consume less power while giving off the same amount of light.

If people considered the issues rather than the partisan labels, we would have a much better country. And those who call themselves "conservatives" might actually be in favor of conserving.

Dude...

You should at least try to drop the whole left/right game...

The sooner people do that and realize that the government doesn't have our best intrests at heart, we'll be better off...

If I didn't know better, I'd think you might be listening to Norman Goldman (http://normangoldman.com/). He's all about getting past the labels these days.

But that's not to say there isn't a specific group of people to blame for what's fucked up this country the last 32 years. And they certainly have used the Republican party as their primary vehicle to do their damage, though their infiltration into the Democratic party has sadly increased over the last two decades. Neither Clinton or Obama have acted like a Democratic President should, at least half the time (and I'm being generous with that estimation)

Which brings me back to that series of issue polls which I talked about doing several weeks ago. Backburnered that whole idea for a while, but I'm still working on it.......

Well, you have to speak the truth as it is. And in the context of this thread, there's only one side that's spreading the bullshit that conserving electricity is a "bad" thing. Even false "liberals" like the DLC aren't pushing that crap. So who else would you blame for it?

It's the right wing. Specifically the corporatist right wing in this case, but a lot of people who don't consider themselves corporatists, and certainly don't benefit economically or otherwise from predatory corporatism, are falling for this bullshit.

Dude...you are way off.

Nobody will dispute that CFL bulbs use less energy...hell I am a bigger fan of LED bulbs.

The idea that Right wingers won't buy them is absolute crap.

You want to play stereotypes?

How about left wingers won't buy them they expect the state to buy them for them.

Just as ridiculous.

FORD

Maybe things are different in Canada, because you don't have the degree of propagandizing up there yet (since you wisely kept FAUX out. But I'm sure Sun is working on it.....)

As for left wingers expecting the state to buy them... can't say I know anybody who believes that. But once a year or so, the local corporate energy monopoly (actually not so local anymore, since they were bought by Australians) has a promotion where they will exchange a CFL bulb "free" for an incandescent bulb. They set up shop in the Fred Meyer parking lot and have ridiculous lines at this event all day long.

Even though the gas it took to get there, and the time you wasted standing in line probably cost a lot more than it would to simply walk into Fred Meyer and buy the same light bulb. Or even a better one, since the "giveaway" bulbs seem to be the lower grade CFL bulbs, and not the better quality ones which are closer to natural light.

And yes, obviously the LED bulbs are the best quality of all, but they're still new technology, and therefore more expensive up front, which scares a lot of people off. As for me, I live in an older house with wiring that seems to eat up bulbs (even the CFL kind) faster than normal, so I don't want to buy the LED's if they'll just burn up too fast and defeat the whole purpose of buying them (which is supposed to be that they last literally years without a replacement)

The entire premise of global warming which is what caused this bullshit $75 light bulb law that is a lie. I'm gonna miss getting 3 bulbs for $1 to keep the pantry stocked.

Maybe if ("god" forbid) his home state gets slammed with another Katrina he'll "find religion" on the subject, so to speak? He'd still like to think the first one was a fluke...y'know, like what happened to NY & NJ before the election, and....

The problem is all in the wording and the fact twats like Al Gore make money off it.

Climate Change is real....

The climate is and always has changed.

I work in a Potash mine on the Canadian Prairies...the deposit is from a dried up inland sea that dates back over 300 million years...and at that time was the location of the equator.

It is impossible to deny Climate change.

The focus should be on pollution and the damage being done to the earth.

While one volcano can do more damage than humans the fact is we need to do better...we should not be poisoning the planet.

I hear ya.... I'd be totally OK with them, but they don't fit in half the fucking fixtures! I just stuck one in the overhead light in here because it went and I'm too beat to go buy regular ones - so THAT cover's not going back on until I swap it out tomorrow...

FORD
05-08-2013, 12:12 PM
Yeah, you would think now that these things had become the "standard" lightbulb, they could think of ways to make them more compatible with older light fixtures. Obviously any fluorescent light is going to be in the form of a "tube", but maybe the tube should be more in the shape of an old school light bulb?

The technology is not that simple...

Well, 20 years ago, nobody probably thought you could make them look like a pig's tail either, but they managed to do that. Fluorescents used to just be the long tubes. Then they got the odd loop shapes (one of my lamps has a bulb shaped like a "B"). Then the pig-tailed CFL's came out, designed to replace old lightbulbs, but they work better in some fixtures than others. Ultimately the LED's will probably take over anyway, since they already conform to a "normal" bulb shape and last even longer, but many people are going to wait for the price to drop on those things. And it will drop, as prices on newer technology always do.

jhale667

The technology is not that simple...

Maybe not, but not starting off with the idea of what everyone was supposedly going to be happy to switch over to be a direct-replacement for the footprint of existing fixtures was a design flaw. They gave people a built-in reason to dislike them.

New technology is supposed to make life easier, after all... like I said, I WANT to be enviromentally correct and use them, but they don't fit in over half the fixtures in my apartment -and they're even trying to stay on top of things by installing solar panels and whatnot, it's not like it's because the complex is older or anything.... new fixtures aren't readily available yet.

I love when they say we set a new high temperature. A record that has stood since 1937 or some such nonsense. Hottest day ever? What about 1817? 1512? 1392? 764? what about all those years? They really need to clarify that it's the hottest day since they started keeping records 83 years ago. we have no idea how hot it was for tens of thousands of years leading up to today. But it must be global warming right?

I just Wiki'd the year 764 (Kristy, where are youuuuu??!!) and apparently, the Black Sea melted and sent ice bergs floating past Constantinople, so you gotta figure, it musta been pretty fuckin' hot some day that year.
