I'm pretty certain that Ramsey's producers for both of his "reality" shows (Kitchen Nightmares, Hell's Kitchen) go out of their way to find the most screwed up people on the planet to exploit. A few years ago, there was one character on the competition show that was so mentally unbalanced and unstable he NEVER should have been placed within 60 yards of a sharp kitchen knife, yet this guy continued to remain on the show while other, far more capable folks were given their outright release.

I've since stopped viewing anything this guy throws at the screen, and feel pretty good about that.

The UK Nightmares are just so much better than the US ones.

Most of the US ones you can tell (regardless of the 'staged' aspects of any 'reality' tv show) that so many of the people who agree to be on the show are doing so for the refurbishing of the kitchen/restaurant, because I'd have to believe that any restaurant owner with an ounce of pride wouldn't allow a tv crew to come in and film some of the shitholes these US restaurants are...or even agree with the producers to let the production crew dirty the place up for filming purposes, if that's what is happening behind the scenes. With the bulk of the American restaurants, it feels like these places are going under and the owners really don't want to turn the business around but rather get some publicity and free renovations and turn a quick buck when they sell the business.
