Saw this article this morning. I have the other version which is more extensive than this new one but the remastering and addition of the DVD disc is cool. Still curious why Damn Good has never been included on a hits package. Always liked that one.

Tobacco Road
Goin’ Crazy
Yankee Rose
A Lil’ Ain’t Enough

DVD:

DAVE TV

Just A Gigolo
California Girls
Yankee Rose
Goin’ Crazy

UNRELEASED VIDEOS

Sensible Shoes
A Lil’ Ain’t Enough
The Nightlife
Goin’ Crazy (Spanish)
Tell The Truth

The songs from YFLM in this collection were never released as singles and therefore should not be considered "hits." As for the "unreleased" videos, I'm pretty sure I've seen Loco Del Calor and Tell The Truth out there with the MTV-style tag on it. Maybe ALAE will be the banned version with the little people in blackface.

And a little about Friday Music:

Profile:

Established in 2001 by founder and mastering engineer Joe Reagoso. Friday Music is home to a wide array of Classic Rock artists featuring re-issues of classic albums as well as new material from some of Classic Rock's pioneers.

And I found elsewhere that it's another bargain label from the evil Warner Bros. Further reading indicates that their remasters are hit and miss, especially on vinyl. Buyer beware?

AND all these videos are already collected on Napalm Up Yo Ass.

Why would the Skyscraper videos be skipped over anyway as well as That's Life off of EEAS? Like most hits packages, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

Jeez - who compiles these things?? Is that the cover - the pic on their website? It looks like a bargain basement deal if it is. What happened to designing a cover, you know, to make it look like something worth buying ...

And it contains probably the THREE weakest tunes on the otherwise pretty damn good album, Your Filthy Little Mouth ...

For track number one I'd have 'Big Train', which - given that VH were covering old tunes on ADKOT, and with the train on the album cover - woulda been a great rip-it-up opening tune on stage. But it remains buried on an album hardly anyone has ever heard - one of Dave's best.

* Edit * - just read that it was compiled by Dave ...

This is dumb. Why not re-issue The Best, add "Coconut Grove" (so you get all of Crazy From The Heat) which was inexplicably left off the first time around, include a couple tracks from DLR Band (the less screechy ones) and Diamond Dave?

Then tack on all of the videos, along with No Holds BBQ. It ain't rocket science, ya know?

FORD

Or better yet, they should just do one of the "cheapo" remastered box sets that WEA Music has been fond of doing lately with back catalogs. (ZZ Top, Eagles, etc.)

Remaster all 4 of the original DLR albums on WB, and then include a bonus disc with the CFTH ep, all the b-sides, remixes, etc. and throw in "Don't Piss Me Off" and whatever the other song was from the 1997 compilation. Put a $20 price tag on it, and watch the thing fly off the goddamn shelves.

And if they can get the rights to DLR Band and Diamond Dave (Dave probably owns the masters, so it shouldn't be difficult) add them and make it a $30 box. No problem.

FORD

Come to think of it, add "Sonrisa Salvaje" to the box set too. The increase in the Spanish-speaking demographic alone since 1986 should be enough to put this thing into platinum numbers.

I know we have record company trolls monitoring this site, so seriously... pass this on to the suits.

Ah, I'm thinking the Dave TV video is the '86 VHS compilation that has some little vignettes in between the songs. And, surprisingly, it wasn't really well made. Which is strange since Dave was in charge. I won't be buying it. I've got a stack of boots here that would choke a donkey and I don't need to add another copy of what I already have.

Considering you saw "no reason" ADKOT wouldn't sell 3 million or so.....sounds like you STILL have your finger on the pulse of the record industry. Why in Dave's name wouldn't the spying trolls pass this can't miss tactic up to the suits? Only one million units moved this time around, over what period of time? You know, so the execs can plan their vacations and such.

5. Humane slaughter
The most efficient and widely available method of humanely destroying sheep is a gunshot to the brain from a close range.

The use of firearms is subject to the provisions of the Firearms Act 1996.
Note:

* A .22 calibre rifle or pistol is adequate for humane destruction of sheep. High velocity hollow point ammunition should be used. Use two magazines per firearm to minimize reloading time.
* To provide maximum impact and the least possibility of misdirection, sheep should be shot at point blank range. The person using the firearm should move quietly through the pen with the sheep. Under no circumstances should the sheep be shot "over the fence".
* Never fire while the animal is moving its head; wait for a quiet interval before firing.

Under normal circumstances, the recommended method of humane killing of livestock is a brain shot, followed by bleeding out. The bleeding out of large numbers of sheep at the side of a burial pit is not possible, for logistical and safety reasons.

DPIWE experience is that even the most careful operator using a single shot will wound, rather than kill outright, a small percentage of sheep. Wounded animals cannot be assumed to be unconscious.

It is vital to ensure that all sheep are dead before placing them in the pit. There should be no heartbeat, breathing or eye movement. A small percentage of sheep may require a second shot, or bleeding out.

The recommended position and direction for the use of a firearm is illustrated below.

http://www.dpiwe.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/Images/LBUN-5353JT/$File/land_sheepbullet1.jpg
Recommended position and direction of fire for the firearm - hornless sheep and rams.

Using a firearm: Shoot at point (a) just behind the poll in the direction of the animal’s muzzle.

Wow, you know exactly how foreign objects should enter a sheep's body to be most effective or reach the desired result. It's a bit obvious you left out some pointers about ensuring your penetration is maximal and therefore provides you the intensity you undoubtedly strive for with each and every and all encounters. It's no one's business if this type of activity gives you what you cannot find else where, if you could only explain, one time, then they'd understand just what your fondness drives you to.

Reading between the lines seemed to scream "if i can't have my sheep, nobody can". That's all I was able to glean from it. UNLESS, it was a thinly veiled threat about what you want to do not to the furry animals you speak of so often, but to humans, you know, the people who you also call sheep because they don't share your attraction and Love of Dave. My God that's what it is!!! You are threatening people! You have used the words "pistol" "rifle" "firearms" "pointblank" "a second shot" and "bleeding out". If this place has driven you to these thoughts, go away. But you sound like a man on the edge who is making threats. If you did something like that after writing how you, would do it that would be even more heinous. You post is frightening, especially in this day and age. You directed it at me it seems. I have only one choice....this needs to be reported. And it will be.

I think the BBQ stuff works well as split second scenes intercut between Dave's yakking on the Roth Show. Watching it all at once in its entirety could prove to be a surreal case of Too Much Information for the everyday hair metal Best Buy consumer. Dave comes across as a coked out ninja fruit loop on pirate acid - which makes sense to us; but including it in an official release would do more harm than good.

What a weird choice of songs. I figured he'd be putting out another one at some point to capitalize being back in Van Halen (not that they'll sell much and no one really makes money anymore on albums so why I thought that I don't know). "Damn Good" not being included again is insane, I agree. Or his newer stuff. And yeah, why the hell are they leaving off the video for "JLP?!" It should be:

1. California Girls
2. Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody
3. Yankee Rose
4. Shyboy
5. Goin' Crazy!
6. Ladies' Nite in Buffalo?
7. Just Like Paradise
8. Skyscraper
9. Damn Good
10. A Lil' Ain't Enough
11. Sensible Shoes
12. She's My Machine
13. You're Breathin' It
14. Slam Dunk!
15. King of the Hill
16. Flex
17. Shoo Bop
18. Thug Pop

DVD:

1. California Girls
2. Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody
3. Yankee Rose
4. Goin' Crazy!
5. Just Like Paradise
6. A Lil' Ain't Enough
7. Sensible Shoes
8. She's My Machine
9. Flex
10. Shoo Bop

With "Loco Del Calor!," the home video interviews, and DLRNHBBQ stuff as bonuses. Plus a new cover.

In fairness, he IS a member of Van Halen. These chowder-heads live in a self-contained, disturbingly and weirdly distanced from reality cocoon unseen since the days of Led Zeppelin. Hey, wanna buy a wah-wah pedal or some sneakers? They're what Ed uses, all evidence to the contrary.

Seems like an odd songlist, and I would agree that as a solo act Dave really didn't have enough legitimate commercial hits to qualify for releasing any such compilation under a "greatest hits" moniker. Maybe this is nitpicking, but more along the lines of a "best of" would be more accurate.
In EITHER event, um...I'm Easy? Sensible Shoes? No Big 'Ting? Hard to imagine any of those tracks being on many hardcore (never mind casual) fan 'best of' OR 'greatest hits' lists.
Assuming the Dave TV part of the dvd is the 1986 VHS release in full, that is somewhat useful, since that hasn't been updated to dvd for official release, but when considering the amount of solo Roth videos made, the remainder of the dvd portion doesn't even include the better-known videos, and to be frank I'd expect quite a few more videos included in terms of sheer quantity. The overall amount of videos on the dvd seems a bit...sparse.
Nah. I'm gonna give this a pass. Napalm Up Your Ass is far superior in terms of videos, and I've already got all the audio on the original releases and the 1997 "The Best": I don't need to keep rebuying the same stuff over and over again. Suppose it's a good thing something like this is being put out at all, since I can't imagine the interest in Roth solo today is even equal to (much less higher than) Dave's last greatest hits release in 1997 (and that release sold bupkis).

Wrong but that is your trademark ELVISM©®™. :)

Just Like Paradise got to #6 in the US charts Gigolo only got to #12.

Yankee Rose got to #16 so I think by the usual way of judging these things there were at least 4.

True it shouldn't be called Greatest Hits, it would need to be Essential Collection or some other term.

Anyhoo I don't understand why this is an insult or cruel joke or a disappointment. If you don't want to buy it then don't, what's the problem? There is no reason for me to buy it but if some people want to then good luck to all involved. What's the problem?

I'm honestly very disappointed at this package. The track listing on the CD sucks, and so does the DVD. No "Damn Good"? No "Drop In The Bucket"? No Skyscraper videos, "She's My Machine" video, or "Shoo Bop" video? I could go on and on and wind up typing a few PARAGRAPHS, but it won't make any difference. Alright, let's settle this shit for once and for all: You are hanging out by the lagoon, and everyone is getting loaded on some of the Professor's bizarre cocktails, served in coconut cups. As the evening rolls on and attitudes tend to relax, Thurston Howell III serves up some jungle-found cannabis he has brightly loaded into one or two of his Cuban cigars, and has shared them with the group. Now, you have a choice to make: Mary Ann or Ginger?

Not that it was well-put-together, not that the choice of songs was normal (is it ever for a Best of/GH?), not that the choice of videos on the DVD was normal or especially the VHS quality of the long-awaited DLR solo home video collection, and not that there were new songs on the com-pi-lation or anything, et cetera et cetera as the man himself would say...you follow?

But it's interesting that this Greatest Hits wasn't advertised on any of the sites outside of being mentioned here and on the VH Forums.

He is VH's current frontman, but no news of it is to be found on the main page here, VHND, or even his very own official site(!). I see it's at least for sale on the VHND-affiliated Van Halen Store.

Not a big deal, it's not a Van Halen release, but still, just odd.

I know he put one out in '97, but even though time flies when you're older--that was a long time ago--and seems like a good time while being back in VH to release one, but why no care?

Shit, no one even cares about this thread. Alright then.

...nothing from after "The Best" like his fan-favorite DLR Band album, he excludes one of his biggest videos where he did the epitome of Jungle-Studness by climbing mountains higher than Rocky did in Rocky IV--and you know he's big on that because he always talks about and show pics of that kind of stuff to this day, either way, what rock star is cool enough to do that?!--yet not included.

To capitalize being back in VH? Now that he's back in the band, any of his new music will be at the top of the Billboard Charts again when released, he will perform to sold-out (or close to it) arenas for here on out...so why even do it if you're not going to try to put out something decent or have it promoted?

Just weird.

You dont understand. It is the record company, " Friday Music ", that has the rights of the Warners releases, and they would put this out regardless of whether DLR approved or not. That is why there is nothing on it from after " YFLM ". I suspect DLR just sent them some new pictures is all. Which is ironic, as it probably would of been better with old pictures, like the '97 best of.

What's there to understand ? Dave had a greatest hits album coming out. He needs too find out what the record company has in mind. If Dave did contact them he didn't give them much input. And that's why I say he didn't care. Half the song's were never popular at all. The video's are not cleaned up and missing some very popular songs. Hell Dave went out of his way too call Ed to find out what was going too be on the 96 VH Hits album. Which lead to 2 new song's. I just make my own greatest hits albums anyway so I wont by it. I would have considered it if the video part would have been better. Hell I already have those on a boot dvd in a better version. If Dave wanted some of those not so popular songs out their again that's fine I guess, but most fair weather fans will pick it up and say what are half these songs ? Maybe it will do o.k. for him.
