Devo's Bob Casale Dead at 61

Devo Guitarist Bob Casale -- known for the hit 1980 song "Whip It" -- has died, TMZ has learned.

Bob's brother Gerald -- also a founding member of the band -- tells TMZ, Bob passed away suddenly on Monday from health complications that led to heart failure.

Gerald tells us, "As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning. He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer, and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got."

    Bob was 61.

Devo was formed in 1972 and hit the Billboard charts in 1980 with "Whip It" ... one of the first music videos to make a huge splash on MTV back in the day.

About fucking time one of you cretins acknowledged this. Devo were beyond creative and original. Bob was a god damn genius. Unlike say, some shit plagiarizing limey dog and pony act. Yet, no one cares. Nope. You fucking cretins too busy with Miley twat banging and tiresome homoerotic love for another guy who is @61. Fuck you is all I have to say to the majority of you homos.

        And...

If Warner Brothers can remaster Van Halen but not Devo? Bullshit.

No, they didn't. Those are NOT "Warner Remasters" Those are "deluxe" knockoffs for MP3 downloads.

Same goes for the first five Sabbath outings as well. Fuck Warner Brothers.

I saw them in Whistler a few years ago. Almost half of the audience was wearing those funny hats. They sold them at the concession for $60.

This sucks. Devo gave so much more to music than just the song they are known for. To anyone that says they were a one hit wonder i say

I saw them when I was in high school. They handed out plastic hair and the whole audience was wearing it. Devo and the B-52's were the pioneer geek bands that started in the 70's and moved us into the 80's new wave thing. Then you had bands like the Talking Heads come in later. A lot of music pioneering took place around 1978. It saved us from that god awful soft rock and disco shit.

…and the de-eveolution continues. We are all devo!

This interview always cracked me up. Back when the media figures were square and young hooligans were creative and out to make a statement against the polyester tie wearing monsters.

Funny you should mention Miley 'cause there's a DEVO connection there - Josh Freese did most of the drumming on her 2008 record.

Man. 1980 was a good year. I think the first time I saw Devo was on this show.

Last time I saw Devo was Lollapalooza 1996 at The Gorge. Seemed like an odd choice for a lineup that featured Metallica, Soundgarden, the Ramones, and Rancid, but I didn't care. Though I don't know how the Hell they could stand to wear the garbage bag stage outfits in the middle of the summer.

Great show all around, despite the horrible sunburn I got in the process.
