What's the deal with the bare-bones stage? Hardly any lights, no backdrops, no curtain, no ANYTHING...seems so "low rent"...

...it's almost as if they are playing in the rehearsal space behind the real stage.

Something's just soooooo off. No atmosphere. No ambiance. Something just feels totally wrong...even moreso than the last two tours.

Seeing Dave sheepishly "perform" Light Up The Sky made me sad. It's just not his PLACE anymore. He looked uncomfortable, hardly moves, does his Ace&Gary spins, slides across his dance floor, a few jizz hands here and there, and the singing isn't even THAT horrible...waaaaay better than I thought it would be...yet overall it's as if this performance signified the death knell for me.

I guess it's because that even when Dave performs as good as he possibly can...which he probably just did...it is still mindnumbingly embarrassing and vomit inducing.

I'm sad.

Had a friend in Seattle decide to go the last minute. Had a $25 ticket and upgraded to the 5th row for $10 more. Sent some pretty good pics. He said the sound was great and the band played great. Unchained and Drop Dead Legs were awsome. He was laughing at all the old stoners at the show.

Found on the Metal Sludge board:

"I'm back from the show, and holy shit was it surprising. Dave knew all the words, stayed in his vocal range and told a lot of great jokes. The place was jam-packed too.

Just kidding.

I got two tickets in the parking lot for $10 each. The seats were about half full until 2-3 songs in, when the parade of people from the lawn (still carrying folding chairs and blankets) came in to fill up the seats thanks to free upgrades.

I've seen Roth three times before (with Bad Company, the Sam and Dave tour, and the reunion tour), and loved every show. This was a trainwreck. He missed several cues and tried to vamp until he remembered where he was in the song, completely choked on Chinatown, and made even less sense than usual during his stage banter. There were entire sections where he forgot where he was, smiled awkwardly and let Eddie and Wolfie handle the choruses. He forgot several breakdowns, and re-wrote/stretched out the couple that he actually did. And he of course was still randomly singing way too high in parts.

A couple songs in, Roth started prancing around waving a scarf in the air, then literally pulled out a handkerchief and started waving that around. My wife said "Sooooo... he's gay, right?" She was absolutely convinced of it by the time Roth had done his multiple costume changes (including a shiny silver blazer and later a jacket made of sequins).

Eddie looked great, Wolfie looked fat, and Alex looked so bad it was genuinely concerning. Way worse than Mick Mars. But the three of them all sounded fantastic.

It was cool to hear Eddie again, and I had a lot of fun cringing at Roth and laughing at the mullets and all the dancing moms. I'm kinda glad I went, but I wouldn't pay more than $10."

I guess the venue was built by an indian tribe and the parking situation was pretty bad. Once the show got going I guess the sound was great. Yeah my friend said Dave was not singing well but hey it's Dave but he said he was glad he went.

Pretty good, and great to hear that awesome riff. The tune is always gonna lose it's shape a bit as Ed segues into the solo, cos it's one of the few VH tunes I can think of that has about 3-4 guitar parts overdubbed on the recording (as it goes into the solo), and you just can't capture that with one geetar on stage

I like Romeo Delight to lead off or be played deeper in the set. At this point I'd rather see Wolf do a bass solo instead of the sameish Ed solo of 30 plus years. Anything to the Halens coming onstage from our right and Dave coming from the left?

I've only seent three songs, but it looks like Ed goes from fear of what Dave is doing, to "Oh shit, what's he going to do?" to tolerance of what he's doing.

However I do think that if they ever record new music as Van Halen, the only vocalist to write with is David Lee Roth. There you go! Dave can write and record, and someone else can sing on tour.

Ralph Saenz could fit the bill.. That would leave us with two great things:

b) Good riddance to that P.O.S. Steel Panther

Let's act like Van Halen fans and overANALyze.

Yes. let's do

First with just what in the fuck is wrong with him? It cannot simply be related to age. Even Sinatra sang with a golden voice well into his 80's.

The only singer I ever heard worse than Roth was Shane McGowan and that's because he's Shane McGowan. Shane's timing was shot, his words slurred, out-of-sync. The man was burnt out and self-destroyed. Yet the audience cheered on that wreak of a former human being in approval. You cretins are doing the same for Roth. Sad.

Knowing that Shane was suffering from the residual effects of chronic alcoholism, Roth appears to be in the same boat - possibly an enhance neurological disease due to excessive drinking, drugs and stale skank pussy (like the doctor posts). There is no way you can look at that clown and not think something is physically wrong with him.

So enjoy it now while it last, cretins. If Edwardo has any common sense left, this should be the last tour and the last time these money grubbing dick stubbers ever perform together.

Sammy Hagar has been working on a Van Halen smear campaign for the last ten years, because Sam obviously watches American Idol religiously and most have gotten sucked into the routine. I can tell actual Van Halen fans by their nature to not overanalyze Van Halen, or rather not critique on a serious level at all. Van Halen is not a wine tasting contest, it is a couple of kegs of beer and Van Halen is like beer... anyone who bitches about beer at a party should not go to parties lol

LOL, it is just the popular music genre of the 5 minute song to me and it makes it hard for me to dissect it in a serious manner. I laugh when I hear people call Edward Van Halen 'Mozart' or a modern day 'Beethoven', my ass. The complexities and refinement of a classical composition is way beyond the capabilities of Edward and he is not Franz Liszt as a virtuoso. Popular culture songs are nursery rhymes for adults put to music... and the cradle will rock, be if Roth wants to throw a tantrum with his voice or not because he is a interesting hyper 60 year old kid :D

Watching the videos... seems the core issue is lack of practicing with his band mates. His timing is hit-n-miss... when he clowns around he tries to cram too much in and then misses his vocal marks. It just seems too obvious that Dave hasn't spent enough time with the Van Halens practicing... maybe it will improve over time.

Yeah, that really sums it up.

Instrumentally, the band is playing well. The backing vocals sound good. LUTS, DDL and DM sounded great far as the 3 Van Halens went

Roth sounds decent when he sings the tunes. Problem is, he sings a verse properly, then yells out a verse in a strained yelp. And he's back to forgetting lyrics, or forgetting the sequence they go in. I mean, DM has, what, 8 verse lines? And Roth can't get them right? Not enough rehearsal? Does he need a teleprompter?

DDL sounded pretty good all-around, I must say. Even Dave stayed on point for that one.

Nothing I heard makes me want to go out and get tickets for the Tampa show. It's still a case of the Van Halens getting the job done and "Dave just being Dave"...which I think these days means he sings the tunes in a passable manner only 50% of the time. Avoiding yelling out the lyrics in that goddamed awful strained yelp is something easily correctable on Roth's part and is actually something that would not only put far less strain on his voice but would make the whole presentation sound much better.

Apparently, Roth has no interest in doing that, and I have no interest in seeing Dave sing badly between slip-n' slide antics and ascot-waving. So, there you go. A shame, because the Van Halens sound quite good.

I love Dave but he is just not doing his job. He's old with an old voice. And I just don't see the excitement anymore. Sure the deep cut's are cool and the band sounds good but one of it's biggest pieces is only half there. It's not enough for me anymore. I went to the show, and loved it. Traveled almost 200 miles to get there, then another to get home. Add in a 90 minute ferry both ways, and ya get my point. I've put on a lot of miles for this band's music, and I'll do it all over again. I'm a happier guy when they're my soundtrack, and I gotta say they had me from the start of 'Light Up The Sky' last night. It was hotter than hell, and quite fitting for a summertime Van Halen show. Dave didn't mess up too many lyrics, and all-in-all was fun to watch. As I said in my post prior to the show; you won't hear any complaints from me as I'm happy that I had another chance to see Dave & the brothers. The set list was wonderful, (as many of you have noticed), and had my brain tripping down memory lane all through out the concert, and damn near brought a tear to my eye during 'Feel Your Love Tonight'. They all looked great and appeared to be having a good time... along with me and a ton of other people. I had too many favorite moments to name. I heard the morning guys from KISM cranking 'Drop Dead Legs' from last night's gig on their program this morning. An absolutely Vantastic way to end my July 4th weekend!

So basically the two people in this thread that were at the show, you and the Rolling Stone reporter liked it a lot more than the people who only saw it on YouTube smartphone footage...again.

That was 8 years ago and he brought his A game.

If that was his "A" game last night...

Something drastic needs to change before Van Halen the band's credibility is lost.

"Dirty Movies" and "Light Up The Sky" are right in his wheelhouse vocally. I'm sorry, but that was unlistenable.

I still think DLR in his prime is one of the greatest frontmen in rock. And that 1978/1984 produced six of my favorite albums.

I'm sorry, but I can't get on this train.

It's tuned to an open E chord... same tuning used by most guys who play slide guitar. Makes for easy 1-finger playing and Dave has a nice old-school, flat picking technique that he's always used.

Shut up, Zah.

Well kind of but I do think that this is the third tour now and they repeatedly have put a lot less $ and thought into that similar acts.

Who else at that level just wanders onto the stage at the start of an arena show?

But as far as what people heard via youtube? Remember last tour when people kept saying "you can't judge what Dave sounds like from a youtube video!!" And then the live record came out...and it sounded exactly like the youtubes only clearer.

I'm hoping Dave's gonna get in shape vocally over the first few shows. There were plenty of good moments in the videos I've seen so far, plenty of clunkers too. But it is the first show, after all. The damn band sounds incredible.

I've seen Van Halen live twice. Once in early 79 and at the US Festival in 83. People have been telling me how fucked up and sloppy they were at the US every since I joined this site but I don't remember it that way. The long wait before they hit the stage sucked but once they got there they kicked ass. As I've said before you can't fully guage a live performance if you're not there. I'm gonna do my damndest to make it to one last VH concert even if I have to stroll in in a fuckin' wheelchair.

Dave is definitely under rehearsed. Good thing he doesn't care about charging those poor saps going to the early shows, big bucks to see him rehearse! Maybe by the end of the tour he'll be in top form.

As evidenced by the rehearsal photos...who wasn't in them? See how Dave does, timing-wise, remembering lyrics etc a few shows in. Don't look for the jazz hands and slip and slide routine to go away though.

Stage looks small. Like Al is closer to the edge of the stage. I wonder if that's just the venue.

My first VH concert was actually a way better experience. VH played the second night of a two day show. It was crowded but it wasn't impossible to move around like it is as some of the other larger festivals I've been too. I think they were considered a co headliner that day with Aerosmith. The first day it was Ted Nugent and Cheap Trick. The two bands that impressed me most were VH and Trick. Here's a video that'll give you an idea about the atmosphere but the music was dubbed in later.

My friend wanted to catch the Portland show after seeing VH last night but a little thing called work got in the way. No offense to the author, but a fist bump is connecting and special? Hahahahah! I'd say it's pretty much the exact opposite. I don't care if they even look at each other. At this point the whole "ooh, Dave and Ed are onstage together again" has pretty much worn off.
