PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE PREMIERE PARTY
(Interview with Paul Reubens/Nerdist)
Chris Hardwick: Who freaked you out the most? That knew who… that you met, that was like, oh my God, you're that guy! Like who, like which?
PWH: Oh, I mean, you name it. I mean, I'm like a total like fan kind of person to this day. I've got my pen in my pocket and my pad, and I sometimes carry around this 1950s- um, it's called an autograph hound, and it's like this dog. It's like a stuffed animal that was made to do autographs on.
CH: Yep!
PWH: So, I have one of those, and I have occasionally, if I know I'm going somewhere where I know there's going to be somebody I want to have sign it, I will carry that with me.
CH: (Laughs)
PWH: Excuse me? Can I get you to sign? Like you can't be corny or you know, weirder than that. But.. Um, so, practically anybody that was famous that would run across the room.. Eddie Van Halen.. I remember being super excited.
CH: What does Eddie Van Halen say to you?
Studio: there's a picture of you and Eddie Van Halen and Rodney Dangerfield I think?
PWH: No, no, no, close but no cigar. Ummm, David Lee Roth.
Studio: That's right! That's right!
PWH: Yeah, that... There's a famous picture.. Me, David Lee Roth, and Rodney Dangerfield. That, there's uh couple sites on the Internet that saved like, you know? This must have been a hell of a party. Where? What party is this? It's the opening and two years ago, that photo was on a drum set at SXSW that Dave Grohl played. And all these photos.. My Twitter lit up and everything.
Studio: that's hilarious. What was it? The party?
PWH: It was the premiere for Big Adventure.
Studio: Oh, ok... geeez!
PWH: I wasn't sure where that was for a while, and then I finally realized. I saw another picture from there that was the same time.
CH: Wow, that's great.
PWH: The opening of Big Adventure, I sat out on a throne.
CH: (Laughs)
PWH: on the cor... On Hollywood Boulevard right in front of The Chinese theater. Right on the sidewalk, I had a huge throne, and I was wearing an ermine trimmed cape, my Pee Wee suit, with the crown from Camelot, which I tried to keep, and, a put me on a scepter. I walked around my house for about a week or so with the scepter and the crown. I'm not bragging, but, I tried to keep it, and uh, they kept calling, going, you have to give the crown back, and I would kind of be like, no, I'm not giving it back. And then, finally I had to give it back.
Studio: (Laughs)
The Photo with Dave -Ed and Valerie was probably the last photo taken of Dave and Ed until the reunion in 1996.
I hope this works. I've spent the last 2 years transcribing interviews and putting together a year by year history of Van Halen.
