Pete Rose: Still banned from baseball

When Pete Rose got himself a meeting with MLB commissioner Rob Manfred a few months ago, it seemed like there was at least a chance Manfred might decide to reinstate Rose. Today, Manfred released a three-page(!) decision in which he makes it very clear that Rose will remain on the curb.

Reinstatement was always a long shot for Rose, but his case was certainly hurt by a June Outside The Lines report that revealed Rose did indeed bet on baseball while playing for the Cincinnati Reds, an accusation he’s always denied. Manfred references that report multiple times in his decision, and concludes that Rose has failed to come to a “mature understanding of his wrongful conduct.”

Rose's basic, if not articulated in detail, stance for reinstatement seems to be along the lines of:

1. The commencement of his banning happened a long time ago, so why not just let bygones be bygones?

2. Gambling in terms of ethical relativism isn't as bad as using banned PEDs.

3. Rose still claims, even when he sometimes wavers about betting on OTHER baseball gams, that he never bet against the Reds while he was a player/manager.

4. Rose had such impressive stats when he was in the prime of his playing years therefore he deserves to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

However, Rose still continued to gamble even after he was banned, and still shows up at ballparks and baseball-themed conventions, all the while selling autographed memorabilia. And, indeed, Rose didn't come semi-clean about his behavior until well after the ban was instated. And even that didn't feel like an act of contrition as much as it did a half-hearted effort to admit to the minimum amount of misbehavior possible in order to get back into the good graces of professional baseball.

I might be inclined to feel a bit more sympathy for Rose had he not spent his years since the late 1990s skulking around the fringes of the game like some MLB version of the Ancient Mariner while still continuing to gamble and financing his activities via selling autographs signed on memorabilia from the very game he was banned from. Had he came clean immediately then stopped betting on sports and simultaneously stayed away from the game, perhaps I'd be more inclined to think perhaps Rose deserves a break.

But Rose did what he wanted to do before, during and after the ban. And that's fine. But it has consequences.

MLB has much bigger fish to fry than dealing with Pete Rose's ancient shenanigans. Things such as falling attendances, being surpassed by the NFL and the NBA in terms of tv revenues from the broadcast rights...systemic issues in terms of profit margins that won't be altered one iota by reinstating or keeping Rose shut out.

There's no upside to lifting the ban on Rose for anybody except Rose, so why bother?

Yet pitchers are getting long term guaranteed deals for over $100 million. Cueto signed a 6 year $130 million dollar deal that he can opt out of for more money in 2 years. If he gets injured any time during this deal, and never plays again, he'll still get all $130 million.

They are also saying in a couple of years when Bryce Harper is 26 and his current deal expires, he will be getting $500 million plus. Fucking crazy.
