So who saw this shit last night?

Eddie 'the oaf' Trunk doing his Hagar fanboy crap as usual...?

https://youtu.be/hayX97I0Kqg

From our FB page -

My goodness, that REELZ special was HORRIBLE.

The bias and blame towards DLR was incredibly unfair. Yes, we all know that EVH and DLR butted heads. Yes, we know that DLR's actual singing voice was not great.

But they make a point of emphasis about DLR being drunk at the '83 US Festival? THE WHOLE FUCKING BAND WAS HAMMERED, TRUNK!

They made DLR the fall guy from the start. You could tell that by the previews when they only interviewed Hagar and Mike. Then Trunk says he was interviewed, and that just made matters worse. Fortunately, Greg Renoff held his own and was actually objective.

Then, they start on the Hagar era, and they say an absolutely blatant LIE that 5150 was the best-selling VH album of all-time! As a refresher for those who don't recall, VH I and 1984 sold 10 million albums each, 5150 only sold 6 million.

The only good think from this terrible show was, at least for me, that I had never seen the Stockholm 1984 video clips. I had only heard audio.

The missus was actually channel surfing on the night it premiered and told me it was going to be on in a couple of hours. I had actually forgotten about it airing prior to first reading about the program in a thread here and her telling me it was going to be on. I got distracted by something else, forgot to watch it, then forgot that I forgot to watch it prior to reading this thread. Judging from what you guys have said, it wasn't worth the bother.

Particularly if Eddie Trunk was being interviewed: why would I care to listen to him - again - say how he liked the band so much better after Sammy joined? That's his (or anybody else's) personal taste, fine, whatever. For me, the only era of the band REALLY worth remembering in terms of the music ended in 1985. From 1985 onward, the soap opera is far more interesting to me than the musical output.

....and then Dave took a whole bottle of Vietnamese fish sauce and dumped it all on ten groupie's asses and threw a bucket of shrimp on them and proceeded to eat everything. Alex was rolling in a pile of Smarties candy and cocaine and licking it off an underage girl's tits. Eddie stared at the wall while Mike ate a bucket of chicken and washed the greasy mess down with swigs of Jack Daniel's. After years of this the band started to fray at the seams.

Man, I've watched it about 5 times already. It's now clear that my all-time favorite band (Van Halen) will never get back together. With Michael talking about Ed/Alex parents being alcoholics, that just kills any hope for me. And also mentioning that Alex had to have a bucket right behind him so he doesn't pee on himself, like heavy alcoholics do. The latter isn't so bad, but you don't bring family into the drama. I'm so bummed. But since I still live and breath The Mighty Van Halen, it's still a good watch because of what appears to be upgraded US Festival footage and the Monsters of Rock footage, as well. And we all know Diamond Dave forgetting the lyrics to "Romeo Delight" was staged. No doubt he was hammered, but they all were. Hell Ed even messed up on "Cathedral." Mike is my all-time favorite bass player and was a huge influence on my playing, plus he is the nicest one in person out of the original "Big 4" but he shouldn't had did that interview.

Speaking of the US Festival. Is there anything better than at the 2:55 mark of this video? A kick followed by the best scream in rock. "It was heaven, right here on earth."

Drunk or not, Diamond Dave is the greatest front-man of all time!!

Personally, I loved it. Whereas can an out of work/failed actor get a gig other than playing a character actor of one of the worst bands of all time? My fav scene was when the F A T actor who played Eddie called the other F A T actor who played Spammy wanting to give him an apology blow job. The F A T actor who played Spammy was "no thanks..." Yeah, right.

Tonight REELZ dedicates an hour to tell us what a cocksucker Don Henley is!

Nah. Henley is just a glum, smug, totally self-satisfied bore.

Glenn Frey, on the other hand, was an obnoxious jerk. An egocentric prick to the nth degree, and it was actually funny watching him in any given interview, because he was such a prick to the point where he didn't realize it and every word he said (unintentionally, to him, because he was totally oblivious to it) just reinforced his prickness.

And fuck Timothy B. Schmidt while we're at it.

Fuckin' Eagles wuss rock. That band neutered Joe Walsh so gradually yet - in the end - so completely that it was almost imperceptible.

twonabomber
07-19-2018, 09:04 PM
It ain't the Eagles without Glenn Frey!

They made Joe Walsh dry out for the Hell Freezes Over tour and wouldn't let him go on Howard Stern's show. Stern called Walsh "Stepford Joe." Walsh had sung Desperado live on the air one time, and supposedly Henley got pissed. Stern didn't bring that up in his last interview with Henley.

And they fired Don Felder...

You find out with so many of these geriatric classic rock bands still floundering on that it usually comes down to a couple - or one, in some cases - of members who actually run the band, make the decisions, own the band name, etc.

Like, back in my teens, I had that naïve idea that all rock bands were democracies, where all the members had an equal say, an equal share: turns out such a democratic approach was the rare exception, even when these bands were peaking creatively.

The Eagles, which certainly boiled down to Frey and Henley by the time the post-Hell Freezes Over reunion tour period happened in terms of leadership, kicked Felder out because in the end they could. Doubtless Frey and Henley had their reasons and disagreements with Felder, but the essence of it was that they could remove Felder and not lose a nickel of revenue. Booting Felder out wasn't the equivalent of, say, the Stones firing Jagger: in terms of the people who matter to The Eagles (those who buy the concert tickets), Felder's sacking wasn't going to cause any disruption in terms of ticket sales. So, why NOT boot Felder out, get some no name guitar player in there to play Felder's parts for a salary (there is certainly NO shortage of guitar players out there capable of copying guitar parts who wouldn't mind a decent, steady paycheck), not have to deal with whatever aggravation Felder was causing AND save some money on top of it?

I'm not saying as a fan that I agree with that strategy. Personally, my own feeling is that I'd prefer these bands to have as many members of the original/definitive lineups as possible long as they can still play their instruments. I mean, otherwise, you can get whittled down via concessions to these ludicrous situations you have these days, like...Quiet Riot featuring Frankie Banali, and ONLY Frankie Banali. I'm hardly what could be termed a diehard Quiet Riot fan, but these allowances you have to make to see these classic groups who are in many cases still "groups" by name only...

Well the DLC trolls are trying to push Biden as a candidate for 2020. He's as old as Bernie, and in considerably worse health -his brain already exploded once, and left him with "no filter" and made him a walking gaffe machine. Not to mention he's a friend of the predatory credit card industry, signed one of the PNAC letters, and crashed in Iowa in THREE previous primary seasons.

Compared to all of that, Bernie's a guaranteed landslide win. And definitely so against Cheeto. Or Pence.... if either of them are still standing by November 2020.

Trump will win two terms and then after that we will see what kind of condition the DNC is in and if it's even going to survive. The main question is what is the economy going to do. It's blowing up into another bubble again and we could have another real estate and equity market collapse. Bailing out the banks after the 2008 collapse didn't solve anything but keep the borrowing and spending addiction going.

Yes! According to Van Halen "Rising" and many other pics I've seen, that was their preferred choice of beer. The local store must have been out so they bought some Colt 45 to make the bus ride more enjoyable. That's my guess as to why they are drinking Colt instead of Schlitz.

Craft beers didn't exist back then... it was all about alcohol content and getting drunk. The fashion elements are just marketing crap targeting men. Schlitz had the "Bull" and Colt had the "Gun"...

Based on US Alcohol regulations anything labeled "Malt Liquor" generally contained over 12% alcohol content and also had corn, sugar, or rice added to it to kick the fermentable sugars up to increase alcohol content. Beer generally fell below 5% alcohol and was mostly brewed from barley without the additives.

I think it's safe to say Van Halen drank anything that was there for free although I suspect Schlitz was paying for some marketing here and I wouldn't be surprised if it came back to Monk and I wouldn't necessarily trust Van Halen Rising as the final word on anyting. Yes, there were a shortage of breweries as several thousand became less than 100 by the late 1970's. But I doubt the entire band had much preference either way. Drink a shitty beer or "malt liquor" with a high ABV or do a shot with a less shitty beer like Bud, PBR or Schlitz; I suspect that the beers were a way to keep a steady buzz on while still being somewhat hydrated and not getting too drunk. Aside from Alex, and later on Ed, I doubt the band drank 24/7 in the early years and gleaning Monk's anecdotes, they probably ate regularly and didn't drink until evenings most of the time...

The presumption here was that American beer was really weak until fairly recently but that was maybe because US Budweiser was.

Funny thing to compare is that in Russia until 2012 anything under 10% so basically almost all beer, wasn’t classed as alcohol at all. It was just a foodstuff so no restrictions on it at all age or otherwise. 🙂

The presumption here was that American beer was really weak until fairly recently but that was maybe because US Budweiser was.

Malt liquor has ebbed and flowed in popularity. Currently, it's popular with the poor folk in the 'hood because of the alcohol content and they way it's sold in 24oz or 40oz containers and is cheap. Bud became ascendant over Schlitz and Pabst and the rest because of marketing and the taste for lighter, thirst quenching beers over flavor - a trend that seems to have begun after Prohibition was repealed and was accelerated by WWII and the use of adjuncts (like rice and corn) in place of wheat and malt. Here's a video about malt liquor!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5gQ_rruDmc
And also the revolution in transport brought about by the rail and trunking industries made regional brewers collapse. The trend was reversed starting in the late 60's with the San Francisco brewery Anchor Steam, or with the rise of home-brewing and a few "microbreweries" making better quality beers starting in the late 1970's. In 1980 there were something like 100 breweries (without checking), today there are over 4000, and even the "microbrews" have been renamed craftbrews because they tend to make and awful lot of beer, though Bud continues to be a best seller...

Funny thing to compare is that in Russia until 2012 anything under 10% so basically almost all beer, wasn’t classed as alcohol at all. It was just a foodstuff so no restrictions on it at all age or otherwise.
