Assaults on ICE, Border Patrol surge as illegal immigrants get more violent

Assaults on ICE agents reached a decade high in 2017, and assaults on Border Patrol agents have also surged in recent years, according to new government numbers that seem to back up agents’ claims that illegal immigrants are increasingly looking to fight rather than flee.

The new numbers, reported by Homeland Security’s inspector general, could even be underselling the problem, investigators said, because the government doesn’t do a good job of tracking incidents, and agents and officers don’t always report them properly.

But the report does signal renewed danger particularly on the southwest border, where agents say a surge in illegal immigration in recent years generally correlates with growing violence.

The US/Mexico border areas have gotten a lot more dangerous over the years... even popular tourist stops are no longer the safe havens they used to be.

When I lived in California trips across the border were a fun party time back in the 70's/80's with very little to concern yourself with. In the early 2000's living in Texas we used to take trips to Laredo and things had changed considerably by the very visible presence of armed police, soldiers and federal police. It was really clear you did not want to venture anywhere beyond the main tourist area.

Last year a trip to Cabo San Lucas convinced us we're done with visiting Mexico... We had just returned from a fishing charter and were walking through a shopping mall near the harbor... something went down and 3 truck loads of federal police in full military gear, body armor and automatic weapons stormed the mall and ran us all out of there. Never knew why they were there or what went down... but that capped it for me and my wife. Plenty of other tropical destinations where the only real danger is some drunk asshole in a bar...
