Michelle Obama Will “Never Forgive” Donald Trump for Birtherism
The conspiracy theory wasn’t just racist; it made her fear for her family’s safety.
Michelle Obama’s new book, Becoming, is out November 13, but an early review by The Washington Post suggests the long-anticipated memoir contains some of the thoughts that she might have been divulging to her best friends over the past decade—but not to the rest of America. That includes her real thoughts on birtherism, the conspiracy theory Donald Trump perpetuated—and used to build his fame—that claimed Barack Obama was born in Kenya.
“The whole [birther] thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, its underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed,” Obama writes, according to the Post. “But it was also dangerous, deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks. What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls? Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this I’d never forgive him.”
