Dusty Hill, ZZ Top bassist, dead at 72

Dusty Hill, the bassist for ZZ Top, has died. He was 72.

Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard of the Texas-based trio issued a statement writing: "We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX. We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top’. We will forever be connected to that ‘Blues Shuffle in C.’"

"You will be missed greatly, amigo," the statement added.

    RIP

Bummer. If I remember correctly, he hasn't been in good health for a while, so not all that shocking. I think Gibbons just put out a solo album (which I haven't heard yet) so Dusty probably hadn't been working for a while now.

ZZ Top was probably the only band that stayed together for 50 years without any lineup changes, so you have to respect that... even if they did go overboard with the synthesizers in the mid 80s (like damn near everybody else)

Very sad. ZZ TOP has been such a monument for so long...

I hope Gibbons will consider the band is done and not try to find any replacement bassist.

Oh, and what will Dave Grohl have to say about this? No question he's booking himself on every talk show an media outlet he can find to sat how Dusty's death affected him and only him.

He had just stepped off their current tour to go take care of a hip issue... That's was posted on Facebook last Friday.

Hill had been dealing with a health concern related to a hip issue as recently as Friday, the band revealed, adding that they were awaiting "a speedy recovery" and hoping to "have him back pronto."

"The members of ZZ Top, Billy, and Frank, would like to share that Dusty, their fearless Bass player, is on a short detour back to Texas, to address a hip issue," the Facebook post read. "Per Dusty’s request ‘The show must go on!’ With that directive, ZZ Top has put the services of Mr. Elwood Francis, their trusted guitar tech of the past two decades, into play with his slide guitar, bass guitar, and harmonica playing in full swing."

No indication of his cause of death... just that he passed in his sleep. Nice way to go if you're going...

                        Is it though?

Is that not missing out on a very important moment?

                        Something I ponder sometimes...

I’m willing to bet he died from an accident overdose on pain medication…. He was due for hip surgery.
