The original HALLOWEEN. It relied on atmosphere and tension rather than gore.

The first Evil Dead really nailed it for me.

Mezro...I really like the ending of Audition too; people walked out of the theater during that...

Am I the only one that doesn't really get scared at scary movies? My cousin who lives upstate got piss ass scared after watching the Blair Witch. Maybe it's cuz he lives in the middle of nowhere surrounded by woods. I never understood that.

Now you guys are talking my favorite genre in films.
As for scariest cult classic I'd have to agree with Sarge........TCM is a classic, mainstream it would have to be The Exorcist, but if any of you enjoy real horror the Italian movies rule.. Anything by Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci are real fuck ups.
Most Cannabalistic I'd say Cannibal Ferox(solid outing/ another Italian Flick)
Slashers well I'd have to say "ICHI The Killer" is phenomenal.
Also look into any of the Japanese thrillers if you can find them. If you want any good titles for Horror movies go to "DVD DRIVEin.com, Thedarkside.com, or RueMorgue.com and enjoy!!!!!!!!!

The Entity (1982)

It is enough to deal with things you can see, but this one is based on an Entity which is invisable.

So it really had a mental inpact. How in the hell do you hid if you can't see what you are hiding from?

"The Exorcist" is a very disturbing and powerful movie.
I think "The Omen" is also quite a pretty scary movie.
"The Shinning" is not too scary but has some disturbing moments.
I'm thinking of the Redrum scene. You know what I mean.

I'm with you on not getting scared. The Exorcist was funny, Halloween bored me - I stopped watching it after a while. But Friday the 13th first one was a great film, one of my fave. I like the Nightmare on Elm Street series, although not scary I like 'em. I saw the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it wasn't bad, a bit predicable but good. I wanna see the origional though. I hear good things. Red Dragon (Prequel to Silence of the Lambs) although not quite horror is a good film - very clever plot I think. House on the Haunted Hill wasn't bad either. I've seen so many horror films I can't remember them all! I've seen hell raiser but I can't remember it. But horror films are the new comedy in my opinion.

Yes and the music in that film is really scary too. Like the part when they dig up the grave and find the dog skeleton. Really creepy stuff.

I used to read Stephen King books religiously. The early ones I guess are the best. The Shinning, The Stand, Salem's Lot.

Generally his books are much better than the film adaptations.

Trilogy Of Terror, story 3, The Zuni Fetish Doll was really good.
Karen Black stars.
When she was running from that little fucker and hid in the bathroom and it had that huge butcher knife coming at her from under the door, lol. That freaked me out a bit.
Just seeing that blade moving and jabbing furiously was wicked.

Then she tries to grab it a couple times and gets cut.

I hate knife cuts

the creature, and the intense feeling of claustrophobia,
freaked me. (not to mention the chest-burst scene)

Hell yea, that little doll was a trip. I didn't want to walk on the floor. I went to Universal with my parents right after they made that movie, and they had the doll on display, and it was even scary in a glass box

That little bastard was wicked as fuck and showed no mercy.

In the re-make of that film they used an identical doll, he was a scary mother fucker.

absolutely my fave.....i slept in my parents room for 3 nights after seeing that flick..the atmosphere and music..no one would think twice about a guy walking around like that on halloween..at least not back in '78....and the way he would be RIGHT THERE..the open door when the chick was on the phone and gone a split second later..the guy looking through the door while she was in the washroom..when he raises up from behind the parked car when the girl runs by taking the kid across the street..the kid runs into him at the school after making the other kid drop the pumpkin..
scary fuckin movie...although my kids didnt think so ..it scared the shit outta me

Ok, well...i'm a definite Horror movie buff. Having said that, it'd be tough to narrow down to one movie.....but if so, it's be the first Halloween. It was an independant movie, done on a shoestring budget, and NO blood actually shown in any scene. Yet...it was so perfectly made. Dark, eerie...and it spawned the most recognizable and intimidating evil character in the form of Michael Myers, a.k.a "the shape". Done by John Carpenter as a tribute to Psycho, it gave way to many imitators (Jason, most notably) and to me is unmatched for it's simple yet chillingly suspenseful feel. The music, also one of the most recognizable themes ever, was perfect in each scene. As a fan of many (not all) of Carpenter's films, one thing i always loved was his uncanny ability to put just the right music to his scenes. He cowrote and played much of the keyboard work to alot of his films...another cool tidbit, IMO. Some of my favs by him (other than Halloween) are The Fog, The Thing, Christine, Prince of Darkness...to name a few. Just mentioning The Thing made me remember how much i loved that one, too....perfect atmosphere....small group of guys trapped in the antarctic....an alien that can assume the likeness of anything....so cool. The tension of "who can i trust?" and the music...low, pulsing, and creepy.....man, good stuff. Not to mention...for it's time...ground-breaking FX. Well, i've rambled enough....cant end without giving props to Psycho, Jaws, Exorcist, The Ring, The Blair Witch Project( go ahead, laugh lol), or Black Christmas. Peace.

Prince of Darkness is a great movie; have not seen it in years but it really hit the twisted spot well. Dug the Alice Cooper cameo too.

All of the others are great movies too. I loved The Blair Witch Project and The Ring. Both deserve way more respect from the casual horror fan.
