    Dem's Marine Misfire

    DEM'S MARINE MISFIRE

    By STEFAN C. FRIEDMAN

July 31, 2004 -- SCRANTON, Pa. — John Kerry's heavily hyped cross-country bus tour stumbled out of the blocks yesterday, as a group of Marines publicly dissed the Vietnam War hero in the middle of a crowded restaurant.

Kerry was treating running mate Sen. John Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, to a Wendy's lunch in Newburgh, N.Y., for their 27th wedding anniversary — an Edwards family tradition — when the candidate approached four Marines and asked them questions.

The Marines — two in uniform and two off-duty — were polite but curt while chatting with Kerry, answering most of his questions with a "yes, sir" or "no, sir."

But they turned downright nasty after the Massachusetts senator thanked them "for their service" and left.

"He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands," one Marine said, adding, "I'm 100 percent against [him]."

A sergeant with 10 years of service under his belt said, "I speak for all of us. We think that we are doing the right thing in Iraq," before saying he is to be deployed there in a few weeks and is "eager" to go and serve.

The Marines — all of whom serve at nearby Stewart Air Force Base — wouldn't give their names.

It wasn't an auspicious start to the senators' "Believe in America" bus tour — a 22-state, 43-city tour that will cover roughly 3,500 miles over 15 days in an effort to carry some of their momentum out of the Democratic convention.

But the rest of Day One went smoothly, as massive crowds — including what Kerry said were up to 20,000 in Harrisburg, Pa., — greeted him, Edwards, their families and Ben Affleck at the tour-kickoff event in Boston and at two stops in the Keystone state.

"Ninety-seven days [left in the campaign]; let's make it happen," Kerry told hundreds of bleary-eyed but upbeat supporters who showed up at a 7:30 a.m. rally on the shores of Boston Harbor — less than nine hours after Kerry finished his acceptance speech.

Kerry also employed Paul Revere's famed midnight run and imagery of Bunker Hill to bash President Bush over U.S. intelligence failures.

"These are the places where people dared to stand up and put their lives on the line — to take a risk — for something they believed in very deeply," Kerry said of the Boston neighborhood where he was speaking.

"One if by land, two if by sea, and the message was right. Come to think of it, they had better intelligence than we do today about what's going on," Kerry continued, drawing the loudest applause of the event.

In Harrisburg, Kerry noted that there was more bad news coming out of the financial markets yesterday, with oil prices reaching new highs and economic growth limping along at three percent.

If those marines were so offended by Kerry why not constructively discuss it with him face-to-face instead of punking him out after he left?

Mezro...most of the marines I know are tough guys with a set of brass balls; these 4 were a bunch of bitches...
Got me a date with a shaved Asian. I know, I know; I think it's fucked!

        Kerry is going to lose.

If the Dems had picked someone like Lieberman, it might have been different, but...cest la vie.

Holy Joe will NEVER be President. Not just because he's a Republican posing as a Democrat, but because he's so goddamned boring. Granted, Kerry's no Howard Dean or Bill Clinton either, but his speech the other night showed great improvement in that area. Lieberman's speech nearly put me to sleep, and it was one of the shorter ones.

Too bad he can't manage anything more than rhetoric and bullshit.

Edwards was the worst of the lot. "Elderly people who can't afford drugs, Help is on the way".

Nevermind that vermin like him who make their fortunes suing the medical industry is the primary reason health care is so damned expensive.

No, the reason that health care is so expensive, especially during the last three years is that nearly every member of the BCE cabinet is tied to the pharmaceutical industry, and the Senate Majority Leader also happens to be the CEO of the largest corporate hospital chain in America. The insurance industry is also well connected within government, including your buddy Holy Joe Lieberman (told ya he was a Republican)

You live in an interesting little world, Ford.

For this quaint little scenario to be valid, you'd have to pre-suppose reasonable health care costs during the period of time prior to the cabinet being in place.

In case you were born under a rock, this is decidedly not the case.

Edwards has made *millions*. Ask him where it came from. If he answers honestly, ask him his opinion on the fact that everyone from the drug companies down to the medical practitioner has to raise costs to pay for it.

"Holy Joe". Please don't tell me you are an anti-semite, Ford.

Assholes like Edwards make the costs of medical malpractice insurance skyrocket, and the patients get the bill...

Holy Joe has nothing to do with him being Jewish. it has everything to do with him being holier than thou, and believing that everyone should agree with his interpretation of morality. From movies and video games to gay marriage, to his contradictory immoral support of the neocon agenda.

At least the man will out and out say what he believes which is a damned sight better than this Clintonesque "say what works in focus groups" nonsense.

What is your opinion of the almost first lady Tipper Gore?

Now *that* was a runaway morality train. (And, it elevated Frank Zappa to godhood in my personal pantheon )

Um, they were eating lunch when Kerry imposed on them. They had some class and just wanted to be left alone. Not everyone who serves in the military is some pumped up monkey who wants to fight every chance they get. Kill the stereotypes and give them some credit.

They will let him know how they feel in November, when it counts. Ford, how will you feel when in November, Bush is STILL your president. Canada looking any better to you?
