SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - Mark Hacking told a witness that he killed his wife, Lori, as she slept in their bed and then dumped her body in a trash bin, Salt Lake City police documents showed on Tuesday.

The documents, which include the sworn statement of a detective in the case, also show that police found a blood-stained knife in the couple's bedroom.
Lori Hacking, 27, has been missing since July 19. Her family recently called off a massive search while police and dogs trained to find dead bodies combed through a landfill.
During searches, police discovered matching human blood stains on the headboard and bed rail of the Hackings' bed and in Lori Hacking's car, the police statement said. Police also located a mattress in a dumpster near the Hackings' apartment whose manufacturer numbers matched those of the box spring in their bedroom, the statement said.
Mark Hacking, 28, admitted to the killing on July 24 at the University of Utah Medical Center's Psychiatric Unit, where he had been confined since the day after his wife vanished, police said. He was arrested on Tuesday in connection with her murder shortly before his scheduled discharge from the facility.
Hacking is jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail and remains on suicide watch. He was expected to be charged with murder in the coming days. Hacking had previously told police that his wife, who had told friends and family that she was pregnant, never returned from a morning jog.
But his story quickly unravelled after it was learned that he had lied to his wife about being admitted to medical school in North Carolina, where they planned to move. Police also discovered early on that Hacking bought a new mattress the same day he reported his wife missing.
