Randy Couture Wins UFC Heavyweight Title!!

    Randy Couture vs. Tim Sylvia

Can Captain America do it again?- “That belt, that’s everything to him (to Tim Sylvia); it’s all about the title, instead of leaving the belt at home. Show people who you are.”- Couture

Important to note: Before the fight, Sylvia gets booed a bit. I really can’t stand that. It’s okay to cheer for Couture and do nothing for Sylvia; but come on, the guy is the UFC Heavyweight Champion whether you like his style of fighting or not.

Question is, will he keep the title?

    Round One

Sylvia tries a low kick that grazes. Couture returns the same.

But Couture follows it up with a hard right to the face that floors the champion.

Couture charges him up against the wall, raining down punches. Then he takes him down with both hooks in and has his back. Sylvia has recovered, however, and is holding Couture’s arms to make sure the choke doesn’t get sunk in. Eventually, both of them are looking up at the ceiling as Couture, still with Sylvia’s back, is flat on his back with the big man on top of him.

Couture is just resting. So is Sylvia. Couture is now starting to land mild, sporadic punches. This is getting boring, as hardly anything is going on. There is only a minute-and-a-half to go now.

Sylvia is starting to hit Couture with backwards punches to the face. Couture is still hitting him with more punches, obviously. With less than a minute left, Couture is going hard for the rear naked choke; but Sylvia is just to good at defense from this position.

    Couture wins round one.

    Round Two

Sylvia lands a right; they clinch, and Sylvia lands an uppercut. Soon after, Couture connects with a jab of his own, then a low kick, and follows it up with four straight solid punches to Sylvia’s face. They clinch.

Sylvia lands a knee, and Couture grabs a leg and runs him into the Octagon wall. Sylvia turns things around on the wall, they separate for a moment, and then Couture puts him up against the wall again.

Sylvia is doing a good job of takedown defense.

But it doesn’t last. Couture picks him up by the leg and deposits him onto the canvas.

Sylvia has him in half guard and nails Couture with a nice left from his back. Couture hits home with a right.

    Then Sylvia gains full guard.

A couple strikes from Couture that don’t do much. However, Sylvia lands three straight significant elbows to Couture’s face. The champion is trying to move his legs up for a submission. Couture stands up purposefully but gets struck on the way up.

Now Couture is standing over his downed opponent up against the wall. Couture lands a few mild strikes. Sylvia connects from the ground.

This is a good fight right now.

Now Couture is back in Sylvia’s full guard. Couture is landing sporadic shots on the big man; these shots are getting better and better.

However, with 30 seconds to go in the round, McCarthy stands the two up. The crowd boos this move.

Sylvia lands a right; Couture lands a hard left.

They clinch. Sylvia hits home with a knee; but Couture body locks him and trips him to the ground.

    Then the bell.

Another round for Couture. Regardless of what happens, this guy is amazing.

    Round Three

Sylvia lands a jab. Couture connects with a nice left hook. Sylvia hits home with a couple of jabs: Couture connects with a jab of his own. The two trade jabs with Sylvia getting the better of it.

Then Couture hits home with a right hand, then another.

Sylvia lands a jab. Then Couture connects with a solid left.

Couture hits home with another left. He’s moving his head back and forth adeptly which is causing Sylvia to miss with a lot of punches. Never seen Couture do that to this extent.

Couture lands a hard left. Then another, then another. Then Couture hits home with a left to the body. Sylvia lands a jab. Then a couple more light ones.

Couture connects with a hard combination. The unthinkable is happening; Couture is beating Sylvia bad on their feet.

Sylvia lands a soft jab. They trade punches, and Sylvia knees him.

They trade jabs. Couture hits home with a grazing one- two. Then another left. Then another. Couture connects with another left. Every time they get close, Couture is winning the striking battle. He does this a couple more times. Sylvia hits home with a soft right.

Couture connects with a one-two punch combination. Then he comes over the top again with a right. Sylvia lands a couple of mild shots.

    Then the bell.

Couture wins this round also. Sylvia has to knock him out or score a two point round to have a chance to win.

    Round Four

Couture comes in for an attempted takedown. Sylvia sprawls out and lands a knee. Then Couture comes in for a takedown again and secures it.

Couture is in Sylvia’s full guard. Moments later, Couture lands a hard right while posturing up.

Sylvia hits home with a right from the ground. He’s trying to work a submission, but it doesn’t look good. They stay in this position for awhile with Couture hitting home with only sporadic strikes.

    So McCarthy stands them up.

Sylvia hits home with a straight right. Couture connects with another hard combination. Couture hits him with several rights over the top as he’s been doing the whole fight. They clinch.

And Couture takes him down again.

Couture has Sylvia in side control. He hits home with a knee to the ribs. Then he hits home with a couple of elbows.

Then Couture transitions to mount. Sylvia turns his back, and Couture tries to sink his hooks into his back, but he’s too high. So, Sylvia turns him over. Now Sylvia has him in a body lock on their knees (while facing one another). Eventually, they both return to their feet.

Couture connects with four straight punches before the bell.

    Couture wins another round.

    Round Five

Couture lands a right and then an uppercut. They’re clinched. Couture drops a level and takes Sylvia down again.

Couture is in Sylvia’s half guard.

Couture starts landing some punches and short elbows. He postures up, and Sylvia grabs his leg for a moment. Couture spins out of that and goes to side control.

Couture is trying to isolate the arm, it appears. Then he connects with two straight knees to Sylvia’s ribs. Then a short elbow, then a couple of knees again. More knees and elbows; however, they’re sporadic. Couture is beginning to pick up the pace.

Then he transitions to full mount. There’s only 1:26 left.

Sylvia turns around; Couture goes for his back. However, it doesn’t work and both scramble to their feet. Couture immediately goes for another takedown and gets it.

    He’s in Sylvia’s full guard.

Couture is landing some lefts to the face. Sylvia’s left eye is blown up big time.

Couture is landing sporadic shots. He stands up.

    Then the bell.

Amazing. Let’s say it again. Amazing.

When the cards are read, Randy Couture is the winner via unanimous decision.

Afterwards, Randy Couture said, “not bad for an old man.”

    You’re damn right!

In short, this was one of the best nights of mixed martial arts fights I’ve seen in a long time. There was a lot of drama. Great fighters at every turn coming through. From the first fight of the night to the last, there wasn’t a true dud in the group.

It’s been said before, it will be said again. Never count out Randy Couture.

By the way, don’t count out Hughes or Franklin either.

    See you next time.

    Undercard Results:

Jamie Varner def. Jason Gilliam via rear naked choke - R1 1:34
Gleison Tibau def. Jason Dent via unanimous decision
Jon Fitch def. Luigi Fiorvanti via rear naked choke - R2 3:05
Matt Hamill def. Rex Holman via TKO - R1 4:00
