From the clip and what Cherone said, it sounds like less of a lost album and more along the lines of two or three tunes that were basically completed and several rough tracks in varying stages of development in terms of the 1999 Cherone sessions.
I dunno. There's a consensus that the Cherone Van Halen thing was doomed from the start due to the whole 1996 BOV1 debacle that immediately preceded it. I don't really agree with that consensus. Myself, I took the Cherone tenure in the same type of spirit that I took the Hagar tenure, where I wanted Roth in the band but was willing to give what the band were doing a listen. Much like with the Hagar years, where if the music being made was music I had liked that would have been the end of it, the same applied to Cherone.
I just didn't care for the Van Halen III album. Even less so considering it was released about a year and a half after the band had announced Cherone was the new singer, because the album paradoxically sounded rushed. The songs sounded like they had been dashed off quickly and the album sounded like it had been mixed literally while it was being recorded. And it wasn't confined to what Cherone was singing about or the way he sang, either. I didn't care for what Eddie was playing, nor how his guitar sounded on that album.Scramby eggs and bacon. -
