Apparently, that falsetto shit all began because they'd asked Eric Clapton for advice back in 1975. They'd split by 1969 and were trying to start again,
and Clapton advised them to find inspiration in America. They went to Miami, experienced new sounds there and by chance Barry Gibb, who had been
asked to sing higher for background vocals during a studio session, started singing in that falsetto tone that he didn't know he could do.
The rest is [disco] history. Fuck, I would never have insisted, what a ridiculous tone to sing in.

I checked a little further, and despite they mention a "1969 split", they carried on releasing an album a year in the first half of the 70s.
They became less and less successful then, and the disco-falsetto thing that began in 1975-76 and led them to huge sales. Go figure.
