When the worldwide web started to really take off no one saw this shit coming - the rise of the 'I do my own research Dunning Kruger' idiocy that somehow spending 10 minutes on your phone is the same as the smartest kid in your class at school working on a very specific thing for 25 years.

I'm generally an optimistic happy camper but if you were trying to design a perfect scenario for a brutal pandemic then it would be difficult to do better than leaving the World Health Organisation, stopping funding to USAID and then putting JFK Jr in charge.

The most important point Gladwell makes is that Kennedy is most worried about the vaccines that definitely work because it undermines his belief system. At that point things start to make more 'sense'.

I was reading a thing recently with some number quoted on US young people deaths from COVID vaccines and they were quoting a completely made up number of 1500 or so and I looked and couldn't find any source so I went to the UK figures which through my job I have direct access to but anyone else can find with a bit of digging and here it's pretty much zero. There are a possible at a stretch maybe a count them on one hand few but they had other shit wrong with them out of millions of people. We took the same vaccines as people in the the US.

Another scary development is that the US government under Trump starting to remove public statistical data so that the next time your crazy aunt on Facebook says that 90% of rapes are done by black jews you won't even to be able to quote the real number back at her.

I don't believe he was the best choice to head HHS based on several controversial positions I don't agree with. There's a couple of positions of his I do support like cleaning up our food chain and improving several of the FDA certification processes.

We'll have to see what he actually accomplishes in the role. Like any leadership position at that level... the one person can't do much on their own. It's their ability to pick mid-level leadership and drive results is more of a measure of success or failure.
