Personally, I didn't find Kirk to be a raging douchebag. Certainly, could come off as a bit smug, but it was usually with a wink and a nod.

Yes, he had conservative views on a whole host of issues. He supported Trump.

He was willing to engage with others who disagreed with him politically in person in a generally civil manner. Sure, he wasn't hesitant to push back or defend his views in a debate format against his opponents. Doubtless the clips of his exchanges with college students he posted were chosen/edited because they presented Kirk in a flattering light. He was a self-promoter, no doubt. I also saw him go on TYT about this time last year and have a civil exchange with Cenk and Ana and speak clearly and honestly/plausibly about where he felt the Trump campaign was at that point re: Trump's strengths and weaknesses vs. Harris's strengths and weaknesses. I mean, Kirk wasn't a Rush Limbaugh who spouted his beliefs from the safety of his radio studio, and it was just Limbaugh on output. Kirk went to college campuses and offered to debate whoever voluntarily came up to the microphone. Kirk knew what he believed and, more importantly, WHY he believed what he did.

I'm not gonna overstate his importance even in light of his death. [Kirk] wasn't someone I'd consider a think-tank caliber intellectual. I'm not even necessarily sure Kirk had such a wide range of influence beyond appealing to those who were already inclined to believe in the things he did.

I'm not even sure Kirk's death is indicative of the breakdown in political discourse or just the nuttiness of a lone looney, as we don't even know anything about the shooter yet.
