And if we encourage nuclear power, then "Al Qaeda" would suddenly relocate their mostly fictional operations to every uranium rich country on the planet - or at least that's what we would be told.

Fuck the energy industry. Bring on the clean, sensible, sustainable solutions.
I think your Al Qaeda/uranium fears are unfounded. 1. you said "fictional" so it's not real. 2. uranium exploration and mining is already taking place all over the world. 3. Al Qaeda's caves are not equipped to make nuclear bombs with raw uranium, they would prefer to buy a pre-made device on the black market, or maybe spent fuel for a less-effective dirty bomb. Security is a concern. Why do you think the US doesn't want Iran to have a nuclear power facility? (by the way, US is not the only country concerned).

Unfortuantely, Wind, Solar and Hydrogen can not power the entire planet unless we make serious reductions in energy demand, and are willing to accept the huge footprints required for all the infrastructure, and willing to accept the environmental consequences too (endangered species, loss of habitat, loss of ecosystems, large roads), and satisfy NIMBY's.

I used to live near a nuclear power facilty (San Onofre)

If you asked the average person what we went to war over, a significant percentage are going to say oil........... we lost that war because oil is more expensive now than before we invaded a sovereign nation.

Expanding on the premise about an excuse to control the oil......

A government invaded an oil rich country to help business make record profits, using taxpayers money, killing innocent people and ruining our economy.......and yet we haven't tried any of these criminals for treason or abuse of power? How can we sit here and say we invaded Iraq to control the flow of oil, lie about the reason for the invasion, lie about the costs of the invasion/occupation, promise that we'll be greeted as liberators and that Iraq would offset our expense of invading the country by paying us back with their oil money, when at the end of the day we're no better off than when we invaded Iraq.....except we have a huge bill to pay back to the Communists.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this isn't a Right Wing or a Left Wing issue but a basic issue that effects every one of us......

Yet, we are doing nothing to correct our mistakes........

This political cartoon was in the newspaper in June of 1990. Sadly, it is still current.
(View large size to read clearly.) I moved from San Francisco to Anchorage in July that same year and have thought of this clipping many times as oil spills have happened around the globe. I think Mr. Toles is entitled to take a day off and re-run one of his old pieces...if he has not already done so.

I have emailed Mr. Toles hoping he won't mind my posting this here. If I remove it it was at his request.

If you are not familiar with his work here's a link:
