US to use Facebook, Twitter to issue terror alerts

WASHINGTON – The U.S. government's new system to replace the five color-coded terror alerts will have two levels of warnings — elevated and imminent — that will be relayed to the public only under certain circumstances for limited periods of time, sometimes using Facebook and Twitter, according to a draft Homeland Security Department plan obtained by The Associated Press.

Some terror warnings could be withheld from the public entirely if announcing a threat would risk exposing an intelligence operation or an ongoing investigation, according to the government's confidential plan.

Like a gallon of milk, the new terror warnings will each come with a stamped expiration date.

The 19-page document, marked "for official use only" and dated April 1, describes the step-by-step process that would occur behind the scenes when the government believes terrorists might be threatening Americans. It describes the sequence of notifying members of Congress, then counterterrorism officials in states and cities and then governors and mayors and, ultimately, the public. It specifies even details about how many minutes U.S. officials can wait before organizing urgent conference calls among themselves to discuss pending threats. It places the Homeland Security secretary, currently Janet Napolitano, in charge of the so-called National Terrorism Advisory System.

Uh..... "The document dated April 1......"

Yeah, sounds like it to me.

At least this better be a goddamn April Fools Joke, because I've successfully avoided Farcebook and Twatter so far, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Oh no! We're at level orange.........shit, unpack the car and tell the kids we aren't going on vacation today!

What an incredible waste of money and what a completely useless and bloated government entity!

I have a Facebook that I've used maybe twice in the last 3 years, and I've never Twatted anyone (not anyone that didn't have it coming, anyways).
This will be of no use to me at all.

At least they're doing away with that color-coded "this is how scared you should be today" bullshit.

I started using Facebook when I moved to Colorado to keep in touch with family and friends. For that it's a great way to drop a quick line to a friend or family member without wasting time by calling them.

Most people do have facebook, generally those here are an exception to many norms.

Alert systems are not a bad thing. It would be impractical to use the alert system that is already in place ( the one on the radio and TV with the annoying noise) with the exception of bombers in route.

America is a big place. the alert system needs to be able to be focused when need be for locations. God willing, we never need it. However, one day a maybe it might be useful. What it is useful for is prevention. For example, a tea-bagger decided to go nuts. this teabagger was not of the bright sort and chatter was over heard. the alert system would be raise in that teabaggers desired hit zone. The teabagger's plan or MO or other such data would alert the public to be aware. Kind of like the Amber alert, but for nutcakes.
