When people go missing in the mountains here it is other climbers themselves that make up the rescue services as volunteers. If a army helicopter search is required then chances are that just means they can have a proper search and rescue exercise rather than just pretending.

One of my good friends went missing climbing years ago it was pretty upsetting listening to ignorant people phoning into dumb radio shows complaining about the cost of finding what turned out to be just his body...

The same magnifying glass is never put on road traffic accidents.

There again, in MA you have no legal right to use deadly force in protecting yourself. So you could end up sharing the same jail cell...
Is that true though? This guy is based out of Mass and writes an extensive blog here on defending yourself with deadly force. You don't even have to tell the cops in MA if you're carrying a concealed weapon...

Yea, but the catch-phrase is RESPONSIBLE for it. That they are not....

I guess I should have clarified that. Deadly force is one thing, BUT you can not use a firearm. AT ALL. It's not mentioned, or stated in the law SO it's not allowed. And yes, you do not have to tell a cop that you are carrying (the only legal thing by the letter of the law that you can do), but it's a real touchy thing with most of the cops I know.

I don't think you should sue someone you volunteered to help if you are accidentally injured period. I have sympathy for the person but how is this the person he's looking for's fault? Maybe he was careless or reckless or maybe it was just an accident.

Right and rightfully so but they didn't ask the volunteers to help nor were the volunteers obligated to help.

And those of us who have lived in the mountains know that better than most! Dumbass gorbies thinking a hike in the mountains is no different than a walk in the park. Nothing like hearing "help" echoing through the valley. Scream back loud enough for it to echo: "where are you?" "On a mountain" "which one" "near town"...yeah...that's a lot of fucking help....
