A long time ago, a USAF officer told me that if you wanted to be commissioned in the Air Force, it was expected you wanted to fly. If you didn't (like him) you were considered weird and would never make it above major, maybe colonel. And if you did want to fly, but were a complete fuckwit at it or in general, they shifted you to other less glorious duties like commanding ground security forces or other nonflying occupations like nuke officers. I don't know how true that is, but it does seem that a lot of the people in charge of the potential Apocalypse are not the best and the brightest, but are the worst and the dumbest. I don't know that for a fact...
