As for the A bombs, yes they killed a lot of people and yes there might have been an element of scaring the Soviets in there, but the casualty projections for the expected Invasion of Japan called Operation Downfall varied wildly but certainly would have been in the hundreds of thousands and the Japanese leadership was quite willing to fight to the last school girl. The other problem was the Soviets were making gains and could have landed on at least part of the home islands complicating things and creating a East vs. West Japan, though I think that was unlikely...

The part I love about the bomb is they weren't sure if it would cause a chain reaction in our atmosphere and destroy it but they exploded the Trinity bomb anyways. Ha! ha! The the world is less violent. My kids have classmates who are openly gay and don't get the shit kicked out them daily. Before Trump at least nowadays bombing civilians generally seen as a bad thing for a state to do although the Russians and Israelis are still dabble in it.

There are similarities in both Dresden and the japanese bombings in that they were to some degree a show of force to support post war horse trading.
Obviously that is a very simplistic statement to obvious complex military/political reasoning.

It's not that well known but use of the bomb on Japan had to be approved by Britain and Canada or it would have been a breach of a treaty because of the Quebec Agreement.

So blame is shared. These were different times and conventional bombing in Dresden was worse than what happened in Hiroshima. I still remain sceptical about the whole thing especially Nagasaki.

Thanx for the input Saint Ford. Our enemies weren't exactly fond of us either. The Japanese portrayed American soldiers as ruthless barbarians who didn't care who they killed. They convinced them they'd be better be off committing suicide than letting us take them alive. Thousands of Japanese did just that. And that was before we dropped the bombs on them. We did that because they vowed never to surrender. Who knows how long the war in the Pacific would have gone on if we hadn't.
As far as the Nazis go, they were evil.
