President Trump cancels Speaker Pelosi's secret overseas trip after she asks him to postpone State of the Union
President Trump cancelled House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Europe and the Middle East in the 11th hour on Thursday — and disclosed confidential information about the excursion to boot in apparent retaliation for being asked to put off his State of the Union address.
In a move that outraged both Democrats and Republicans, Trump announced in a letter addressed to the California congresswoman that her secret trip to Brussels and Afghanistan had been indefinitely “postponed” in light of the government shutdown caused by his demand for a taxpayer-funded border wall with Mexico.
“We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over,” Trump wrote. “I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate.”
The President— who could end the shutdown immediately by agreeing to sign bipartisan spending bills — contended it’s “better” Pelosi stay in Washington for shutdown negotiations and said he had pulled a military jet chartered for her trip. He said he wouldn’t stop Pelosi from flying commercial.
