The rebuilding of Ukraine is going to make a lot of people a lot of money. I just hope it is not turned into another Westernized corporate strip mall shithole

Even rendered inoperable, equipment now in the hands of the Taliban will yield troves of information about how the U.S. builds weapons and uses them.

We left a lot of electronic equipment that gave us an advantage. It’s the electronics stupid. Not the trucks and shit.

The swift fall of Afghanistan to Taliban fighters has triggered a humanitarian crisis, with thousands trying to flee the country. It’s also brought renewed focus on Afghanistan’s vast untapped mineral wealth, resources that could transform its economic prospects if ever developed.

What mineral wealth? Ha! Ha! Just proved you know nothing about Afghanistan or geopolitics.

The defense contractors make out every time unfortunately but the Russians and Chinese have their own contractors so a bit of a false equivalency or lack of a real one. The Ukraine War shows that Western weapons and methods are clearly superior and had given China a big pause on its nonsensical Tiawan aspirations. Things like the HIMARS/M270 are vastly superior to anything fielded by either and have effectively destroyed the (falsely) perceived Russian advantage in tube artillery ranges and "area denial" SAMS/AAA. The Russian Air Force is a bad joke, strategic reserves are nonexistent, conventional forces are smashed and will take years to rebuild, and at this point I have questions on the effectiveness of Russian "Strategic Rocket Forces" and other nukes. I don't wanna find out but it seems a real possibility that Russia could lose even a nuclear war with their shit guidance tech....

Not quibbling but accidents happen in the military. A lot of US service people die every year in stupid HUMVEE accidents because they are kids used to driving their cars with antilock brakes, stability control, surround airbags etc. They then flip their older 1980's tech HUMVEEs with none of that over while taking corners to fast. When I was in the Army a long time ago, I was told 1 in 6 soldiers die in stupid accidents (i.e. falling off a truck, walking into chopper blades) in wars...

But the video is a good example of a conscript, unprofessionally staffed army with some "contract" professionals running things with a stupid system where greenhorn officer lieutenants and captains do the roles fulfilled by experienced sergeants in Western armies. Not sure why the idiot driver is gunning a diesel engine, the torque should be enough to get up on the trailer...

China benefited from our pooch screw pullout of Afghanistan because they got bases, weapons and technology we left there. They will get the raw materials. We get stuck with the bill. Since we left weapons there those need to be replaced and now we are supplying the Ukraine and giving them billions. It never stops. Food for thought, we spent more on the Ukraine this year than we spent on our own infrastructure.

The scope was better than iron sights but it was heavy and mounted really high and off to the side. The rifle had a fixed stock. So you had to do a chin weld and lean far forward to get a sight picture. The ergonomics just sucked. Not the best for a quick sight acquisition at all. I’m used to a red dot mounted far forward on the receiver and I shoot with both eyes open. You can’t do it with that Russian system where you are straining to look through a rubber eye piece. You are stuck with one mounting position as well.
They were better with night vision from the onset of the war. Mainly, they didn't sell their stuff online like the Russians did and the little things like optics were already being improved in the Ukrainian military along with the creation of an actual NCO corp of professionals creating a consistently and competency in the Ukraine forces that doesn't exist in the Russian forces that have traditionally outspent the Uk's by several times every year since the end of the Soviet empire - Western aid notwithstanding. The newer rifles like the AK-12/15 the Russians were supposed to adopt (and used on a limited basis by the more elite units like paratroops) had several optics available but I think had better sights in general. But like always, they never seem to manage to equip their forces with much of anything that isn't directly linked to the Soviet state prior to the early 90's. In any case the AK is roughly equivalent to the M-16 and while I think a bit inferior not enough to make a significant difference on the battlefield. The man carrying it is far more important and artillery by far typically causes the most casualties in a near-pear engagement anyways.

When your "elite" recon/sniper teams are dumb and lazy enough to use the elevator to get to the roof in a shooting war in the country their invading, it doesn't really matter if you're carrying an M-4, Enfield, AR-15, AK-74/12, or a fucking musket....
