I dunno, I just find it hard to play a non-chordal instrument, espesially when there is no drummer around.

Besides, good bass players are so rare nowadays, it's hard to get inspired to learn a play an instrument that's usually used for nothing but rhythem and accompanied ment, and burried under other instruments.

Meh, nowadays you learn how to use effects and learn how to play scales fast, and people somehow think you have talent...

I like those who can improvise, on the spot, slow it down, or speed it up.

People who don't ask what to do, but do something to stand out.

          Those are onces with talent.

I spent 20 minutes once with a bass player who had just bought a digital delay and wanted to do a a solo spot.

It has scarred me for life...

                  LMAO :D

Reminds me of the 20 minutes I spent with a Bassboy who auditioned, couldn't play for shit, and wanted to show off his two-handed tapping compositions 'CAUSE HE WAS "ORIGINAL". :D

Meh, the worst was when I was practicing with a drummer, and all he could play is this fast, blink 182 shit. It told him to slow it down, give me some more shuffle feels...to which he replied..."but I don't know how to play those"...to which I replied "That's cause you suck jr."

As per the original question i have a Boss DS1 Distortion pedal on my bass that i use when my guitarist takes a solo. We don;t have a rythym guitarist and it helps to toughen up the rythym section. Other than that i'm not a big fan of Bass effects.

I also do not like Bass players who think it's cool to improvise during a song, a Bass keeps the base of the song going, if you start to piss about you lose the drive of the song. I do reckon that if you are a guitarist that plays bass every once in a while you will never be happy to play bass because improvisation is hard to do well on a bass especially if you're used to guitar improvising.
