Rhino will unveil a very special David Lee Roth box set, "The Warner Recordings 1985-1994", on February 21, 2025. It includes the first five solo releases recorded by the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee and original VAN HALEN lead vocalist in one comprehensive collection for the very first time. Spanning one of the greatest runs in rock 'n' roll history, the set offers lifelong fans and newcomers alike the chance to experience "Crazy From The Heat" (1985),"Eat 'Em And Smile" (1986),"Skyscraper" (1988),"A Little Ain't Enough" (1991) and "Your Filthy Little Mouth" (1994) in succession.

"The Warner Recordings 1985-1994" arrives in multiple configurations, including 5CD at retailers nationwide and D2C online, digital on streaming platforms, and as a special 5LP version available only at Rhino.com. Pre-order here.

40 years ago this month, on January 28, 1985, Roth officially debuted as a solo artist with the "Crazy From The Heat" EP. It crashed the Top 15 of the Billboard 200 and reached RIAA platinum status. Plus, he logged a pair of Billboard Hot 100 hits — the medley of "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" vaulted to No. 12, while his take on "California Girls" by THE BEACH BOYS soared to No. 3, replicating the 1965 chart success of the original. Meanwhile, "Crazy From The Heat" would later serve as the title of his The New York Times best-selling autobiography in 1997.

The EP paved the way for his first full-length solo LP, "Eat 'Em And Smile". Released on July 7, 1986, it bowed in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 and eventually went RIAA platinum. Roth hyper-charged his sound, accompanied by an all-star band consisting of Billy Sheehan (bass),Gregg Bissonette (drums) and Steve Vai (guitar). Together, they served up anthems such as "Yankee Rose", "Tobacco Road", "That's Life" and more. Kerrang! notably christened it "Album Of The Year", and Roth launched the seminal "Eat 'Em And Smile" tour in its wake.

1987 saw the platinum "Skyscraper" return Roth to the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, elevated by "Just Like Paradise". Meanwhile, Roth kicked off the '90s with the gold-selling "A Little Ain't Enough" in 1991. It marked his fourth straight Top 20 debut on the Billboard 200 and boasted fretwork from Jason Becker. Finally, he dropped "Your Filthy Little Mouth" in 1994, this time collaborating with none other than iconic producer Nile Rodgers (Madonna, David Bowie),churning out staples such as "She's My Machine".

David Lee Roth, a.k.a. "Diamond Dave," shines as one of the most influential and impactful voices in rock 'n' roll history. Between his output as the original lead singer of VAN HALEN and a platinum solo artist, he has sold over 70 million records worldwide, garnered a Grammy Award nomination, and notably earned a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction with VAN HALEN in 2007.

Kind of surprising Rhino would be putting out something along these lines, mostly because I can't imagine the interest in such a set is particularly high. Then again, I dunno. Maybe the cd releases of the original solo albums are out of print. But I can't imagine most of his solo catalog isn't available to listen to for free on youtube or whatever. Sales with Roth's solo albums waned with each successive release; would there be more interest now than there was in, say, 1993? Maybe a combined 250k units worth across all the formats offered (and even that off the top of my head estimate seems high)?

No extras? No live versions of any of the tracks? Just the original albums.

      Hmm.

Better to do something half-assed than nothing at all... Nice to see some sign of life from DLR's "real" music catalog other than those shitty Vegas practice session recordings.

I’m happy. Finally something from Rhino.
And we speak about 2025 Remasters.
The VH Remasters with Dave or Sammy were great jobs and without bonus tracks.

Yeah, I'd have to agree it's a positive thing the solo catalog is getting a re-release...better that than nothing. Certainly better than those shitty Vegas practice session recordings...am assuming those are the ones where Dave was re-recording the CVH material with his circa 2020 live solo band lineup.

I'm kinda dubious about the whole 'remastering' thing in general across the board, in terms of people really being able to discern a difference one way or the other when listening via earbuds. Seems more of a marketing ploy to resell old material.

Although from the release I read, this new Rhino Roth solo box set isn't claiming anything in terms of it being remastered.

This appears to be one of those "budget box sets" that Warner music has been putting out with a lot of their back catalogs. They're usually a good "value" for somebody who needs to fill out their collection and/or replace worn out tapes or vinyl copies, but apparently add no new content.

Dave probably doesn't have a lot of extra stuff in the can from this period, but they probably could have included the Spanish EEAS album, the b sides from this era, and (wishful thinking here obviously) the original master mix of the Skyscraper album, before they buried it in synthesizers. Billy Sheehan swears it exists, but apparently he's the only one who has heard it. Maybe it will leak out one day, like the Van Halen "outakes" finally did a few months ago.

Yeah no mention of remastering in the press release (weird) but Amazon listing and streaming services have (2025 Remaster) in a song titles at least. Of course that can be mistake but that new version of California Girls sounded remastered compared to the original.

I think Billy Sheehan has also claimed that he has full pro shot show from EEAS tour so that would've been cool too have.

At least this is a one way to get Your Filthy Little Mouth on vinyl if you're a collector.

In a new interview with We Go To 11, bassist Billy Sheehan was asked if there is any existing professionally filmed video of a concert performance by VAN HALEN singer David Lee Roth and the band for his debut solo album, "Eat 'Em And Smile". "I've got it," Billy responded (as transcribed by BLABBERM...

                    Nobody knows.
But if you listen to The Best out in 1999 via Rhino, concerning the EP, Eat…and Skyscraper, the sound was better.

Is that the one with Don't Piss Me Off?

Had no idea that was a Rhino one.

Yeah that one. Another Dave solo album that's not available for streaming, even though all the songs are Warner Bros. releases. Probably because of that song.

Admittedly, I have no idea what is currently available for streaming with regards to Dave's solo catalog. Or what it costs for Rhino/Warner Brothers to make the catalog available for streaming via whatever platform vs. profit margins per streaming purchase. I'd tend to guess it'd cost less to make Roth's catalog available for streaming and have a small amount of users downloading it vs. manufacturing physical cds/lps of it and having those not sell.

I've as yet to even buy any music via purchasing it from a streaming site.

Kind of surprised with them leading with the CD release. Firstly because I don't know anyone that still listens to CDs and secondly vinyl overtook CD sales some time ago and sells way more now I think?

Vinyl version is also available but it's only available from Rhino's own store, and it's limited to 2,000 copies.
