Classic Van Halen in top 10

Master of Puppets rated greatest heavy metal album of all time

VANCOUVER (CP) - The greatest heavy metal album of all time is Metallica's Master of Puppets, according to a new book by Trail, B.C., native Martin Popoff.

The Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time (ECW Press) is the eighth release from the Toronto-based author who has turned an enduring love of popular music's loudest genre into a full-time career. "I wanted to know the answer to the question: What were the greatest?" Popoff said.

To compile the book, Popoff, 41, embarked on an e-mail campaign to friends, acquaintances and musicians, asking for their opinions on what constituted heavy metal's heaviest.

"I was surprised at the amount of thrash, black and death metal," he said of the poll.

Rounding out Popoff's top 10 are Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast, Slayer's Reign in Blood, Metallica's Ride the Lightning, AC/DC's Back in Black, Black Sabbath's Paranoid, Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime, Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind, Van Halen's eponymous album and Guns N' Roses Appetite for Destruction.

Popoff's previous books have been well received. "Popoff (writes) on the cannon fodder of heavy rock with enthusiasm as well as a historical sense most pop music journalists just plain lack," the Village Voice wrote after the publication of The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal Volume 1: The Seventies.

Meanwhile, Popoff continues to work on other projects surrounded by his 10,000 albums and 12,000 CDs.

"It's out of control," said Popoff, considered one of the world's leading heavy metal experts.
