I toast to your wish.
Wish I had something really great to say here. Typed 3 or 4 different thoughts only to erase them because they weren't just right. I got nothin'. Just bummed.“Great losses often bring only a numb shock. To truly plunge a victim into misery, you must overwhelm him with many small sufferings.”Comment

You know...it's funny really...VA Beach and I were talking the morning of the Cafe Wha? show trying to figure out who the fuck should go to the show, and trying to figure out who the hell lived in NYC. I mentioned to Va someone from Boston going, and the first name that popped into my head was Max...
habit...
When I texted WARF the first time, the first thing he said was..."I'm doing this for Max and AL..."
The first thing we talked about on the phone after the show?
That's right...Max...
...Yo buddy...the damn Broncos just beat the Steelers...something tells me he'd have taken great joy in that...
But anyways...
It just pisses me the fuck off that these bastards made us all wait so long...so many good people that never got to hear it...because these egotistical fucks couldn't get over themselves...
I know, I know...they're in a better place...and all that...
but it's just not the same...
Here's to you buddy...
and Igo...that was fucking something man...absolutely impressive...move of 2011 IMO..."Van Halen was one of the most hallelujah, tailgate, backyard, BBQ, arrive four hours early to the gig just for the parking lot bands. And still to this day is. It's an attitude. I think it's a spirit more than anything else is."Comment

Personally, I'm not at all into the whole afterlife-spiritual mumbo-jumbo, yet I'm not kidding when I say that something was on the Bronco's side that day. This was evidenced by Denver's opening kick, when the ball traveled the length of the field, hit the fucking goal post and then inexplicably bounced backward, landing exactly at the 20 yard line. I looked skyward, resigned to the idea that the team was going to win, where I saw the image of MAX grinning back at me. With a kid's "hand caught in the cookie jar" look on his face, he said "Hey, that was stelltacular, but I had nothing to do with it. Really. Seriously, why are you looking at me like that?"Last edited by chefcraig; 01-13-2012, 04:11 PM.

I have written so many posts for this thread and
none have seemed to be worthy of this great guy.
(So I havent posted them)
Its hard enough just opening this thread. MAX and
I were tight for a long time. We have also lost
Flash Bastard, Alinchainz and BlondeGirl777.
Nicer people you would never find. God knows the
good ones, thats obvious.
I still owe MAX a massive post here, and its
gotta be just so. He was simply a beautiful person
who really cared about others. No matter what his
own world was dishing out. If you were his friend
you were special, and boy did he make you feel it.
A big part of me likes to think all of this is happening
for him, the VIP gig in New York (Cafe Wha) was on his
birthday.
I still have an email that has taken a while to come
back. I keep checking just in case.BABY PANA 2 IS Coming !! All across the land, let the love and beer flow !
Love ya Mary Frances!Comment

Y'know, talking about all the Pen reunion stuff some of the guys and I talk about time to time, truth is, it'll never be complete again. MAX was an original, he was part of that gang...and he was a great guy. I just cannot believe this happened to someone so young and so full of life and good feelings. I know Susan sure made him happy during the last years of his life.
I've gone back and read some of the old fights/posts/jokes and had a smile on my face.
Never has this place felt more like real life than it has reading this stuff about MAX and the others. These were people that truly affected others, and death affects even this little computer game we call the Army.Roth Army Militia

And while we're honoring those who have left us, I might as well throw in a shout out to my friend Billy Z. Don't think he ever posted here at the Roth Army, but he was a semi-regular at the old FORD Country and occasionally at Slawterhouse. Like me, Billy was a fan of the Mighty Van Halen from day one in 1978. We went to the concert in Key Arena in 1982 and I don't remember which one of us puked more. Billy had no tolerance whatsoever for Van Hagar, even in the days when I tried to. He wouldn't go to the Monsters of Rock show with me in 88. And like me, he was happy, then pissed off as the events of 1996 transpired.
Since 1999 I kept telling him that Van Halen was going to get back together for real. He thought I was crazy. When he was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, and started talking in terms of dying and shit, I told him "Goddamn it, you ain't going anywhere until you see a reunited Van Halen tour".
Sadly, by the time that concert happened here in December of 2007, Bill was in no condition to go to any concerts, and on New Years Day, 2008 he left this world
At least he got to see Dave on stage one more time in 2003 anyway.Eat Us And Smile

Also known as "Rothwoman" at Slawterhouse. I remember her. Hadn't heard from her since that board disappeared, and had no idea she had passed away

Life with good friends really is about sharing the things you love. And the thing is, there's nothing shallow about so many of our great memories with friends being about seeing or talking about great bands. It's pretty tragic that so many of our brothers and sisters lived for this band and waited patiently through everything else in life to see this all happen. And it just took too goddamn long.
Great story, FORD. Hope you managed some good times with your friend at the end. We all leave eventually, but it's just such bullshit when it happens too young.Roth Army Militia
