I think the point is that if you define yourself as a 'hardcore fan' you'll buy it, because your fandom is invested in it. Bands know that, and that's why they makes loads of money. Sure we have the freedom not to, but the desire for completion is pretty strong.

Luckily for us, however, we're fans of a band that doesn't release anything. We're the freest fans in the world :D
