I suppose it was because I never particularly cared for gambling that I never made a more concerted effort to go there for a visit. But by the time I would have been old enough to go on my own circa late 1980's/early 1990's the Mob was basically out of the hotels and casinos anyway.

From the people I know who have been, they unanimously told me it's exactly as you said, which is to say a corporatized, naughty Chuck E Cheese/Disneyesque feel. I HAVE been told that there are still some good live shows to be seen there and that the food is good. Even so, while I'm not a gambling man, I'd be willing to wager I'll never bother going. The Vegas I would have liked to have went to vanished in the early 1980's.
My dad wasn’t a gambler but he was a very good architect who designed a lot of interesting homes and resorts. A lot of his stuff is in Palm Springs. He was a pilot with his own turboprop plane so he was always flying to Vegas, Palm Springs and sometimes the LA area. But my parents and our neighbors loved to go to Vegas, get a big booth and see the shows. I have pictures of them sitting in the booth having a good time. My mom would always be really dressed up. That.was the old Vegas. We lived in the mountains and I remember opening the plane door and getting hit with the heat. Well it was unique. It started to fade in the 80’s and now is something I find completely uninteresting.

I have nothing against Dave. He just got old but man, look and listen to him in the early days of VH. He was very impressive. He was perfect for that MTV thing because he could make great videos and he was such a great bullshitter. He was right for the times.

I kind of feel another party age coming on in a few years. It usually surfaces after a period of extreme bullshit. It all goes in cycles.

          Probably not with bands though.

          Heard this stat recently

Number of weeks with a band(not a solo artist) at #1 in the UK charts album or single

          1980-1984 143 weeks
          1990-1994 141 weeks
          2020-2024 3 weeks

It’s a different game now. There’s no money in recorded music anymore. Music no longer is what it was so you are right. That doesn’t mean we won’t entertain ourselves. Frankly, I see people getting out and doing more outdoor stuff than in the past. You want to go climb a mountain now it’s take a number.

I love how Sam makes his tour logo look like the Van Halen logo and calls it Best of Both Worlds and mostly plays Sammy Hagar shit. This is all about selling Santo rot gut and reminding everyone Sam once was in Van Halen. He calls Al rickety and old and says well it all falls to me now. Now Sam is trying to steal the legacy. What a lame fucker.

Exactly. He is the absolute worst.

Goddamn if he didn't join VH he would've disappeared into obscurity. Perhaps it would've made him more humble? LOL

Had he not joined Van Halen, I could easily have seen him going the Michael Bolton route by the time the 80's wound up, redoing/covering old Motown hits. In that scenario, his solo career in commercial terms (as both a recording and live act) would have wound up being less lucrative than it is currently, since he wouldn't have had the advantage of attaching the Van Halen name to what he did.

Great, great frontman. As you say, perfect for the times, particularly when MTV came along.

Nothing wrong with getting old. His career just sort of went all over the place after ALAE.

I hope we can all agree that getting old is a good thing... it's fairly unavoidable and the alternative sucks... happens to the best of us...

Grunge would have fried his ass. He might have even gone tits up before that. Van Halen kept him going and he exploited the Cabo Wabo thing for all it’s worth. It’s all about Sam. Come on. The guy throws himself a big birthday party each year. Only a narcissist does that.

Look how he blind sided Jason Bonham. He goes to visit his sick mom and Sammy fires his ass.

Just as long as you don’t think you are still the high school football star and can still sleep with underaged cheerleaders. Dave is doing water colors now instead of trying to be 20 on stage and that means he’s finally living his age.

But if you want top tier hotels and restaurants and just a fun place to goof off, Dubai is pretty good.
I’m willing to bet that Dubai is being built with class and quality. Vegas has the gaudy facade built out of styrofoam and wood, not to mention some of the blandest architecture

You know there are cheerleaders that are more than "of age". Not here as much as the Buffalo Jills were dissolved, sadly....

The UAE knows they will run out of oil so they are making a huge effort to be a finance and business hub and to be a world class location to live and vacation. So far it’s successful. Abu Dahbi is more of the financial area and Dubai is more of the fun place. Gas is so cheap that boating and jet skiing is a big thing. I went on a desert campout that was pretty cool. You do some business and you play. It’s really becoming a hook up and networking center. Of course it’s a kingdom and so it all can change on a whim but with the west hitting the skids and becoming so anti-competition people are doing stuff in places like Dubai.
