    Election Road Map at a Glance

    October 30, 2004

    A look at the presidential contest and crucial congressional races in each state, with the number of electoral votes in parenthesis:


    ALABAMA (9) — Safe for Bush. GOP Sen. Richard Shelby campaigning in his home state for Kerry in the race's final days. Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln for last-minute campaigning. Democratic Sen. Daniel Inouye and on to instant political stardom as only black in the Senate. Rep. Phil Crane, longest-serving Republican in the House, struggling to survive challenge from Melissa Bean.


    INDIANA (11) — Safe for Bush. Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh in 2000.

    MISSISSIPPI (6) — Bush's with ease.

    MISSOURI (11) — Leans Bush after a big Kerry investment. GOP Sen. Kit Bond on track for fourth term. Close gubernatorial race between Democrat Claire McCaskill, who defeated Gov. Bob Holden in a primary, and GOP Secretary of State Matt Blunt. Republican Jeanne Patterson hopes to surprise former Kansas City Mayor Emanuel Cleaver for an open Democratic House seat.

    MONTANA (3) — Big Sky for Bush. Close gubernatorial contest between Democrat Brian Schweitzer and Bob Brown, a Republican.

    NEBRASKA (5) — Bush's all the way.

    NEVADA (5) — Toss-up in a state that went for Bush in 2000. Democratic Sen. Harry Reid ' home state leans Bush. GOP Rep. Richard Burr (news, bio, voting record) and Democrat Erskine Bowles fighting for the Senate. Democratic Gov. Mike Easley favored for re-election. Democrat Patsy Keever making strong late run at seven-term Rep. Charles Taylor (news, bio, voting record).

    NORTH DAKOTA (3) — Bush's with ease. Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan (news, bio, voting record) and Republican Gov. John Hoeven both safe.

    OHIO (20) — Big-time battle to the end for Kerry and Bush in a state that no Republican has ever lost and won the White House. GOP Sen. George Voinovich (news, bio, voting record) safe for a second term.

    OKLAHOMA (7) — Bush with ease. Former GOP Rep. Tom Coburn and Democratic Rep. Brad Carson (news, bio, voting record) in competitive Senate race. Democrats will retain Carson's House seat.

    OREGON (7) — Leans Kerry despite strong effort by Bush. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden (news, bio, voting record) coasting to second full term.

    PENNSYLVANIA (21) — Toss-up in a state Bush lost four years ago and has visited more than 40 times since. GOP Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record) heavily favored over Rep. Joseph Hoeffel (news, bio, voting record). Democrats hope to grab seat vacated by retiring Rep. Jim Greenwood (news, bio, voting record), a moderate Republican.

    RHODE ISLAND (4) — Safe for Kerry.

    SOUTH CAROLINA (8) — Bush's with ease. GOP Rep. Jim DeMint (news, bio, voting record) and Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum in competitive race.

    SOUTH DAKOTA (3) — Bush will win. Democratic Leader Tom Daschle battles former Rep. John Thune in year's marquee Senate race. Democratic Rep. Stephanie Herseth (news, bio, voting record), who won a special election in June, favored in rematch with Larry Diedrich for a full term.

    TENNESSEE (11) — Solid for Bush.

    TEXAS (34) — Home-field advantage for Bush. Mid-decade redistricting pushed by Republicans has scrambled House seats, and Democratic Reps. Max Sandlin, Nick Lampson, Chet Edwards, Martin Frost and Charles Stenholm face daunting challenges. GOP Rep. Randy Neugebauer (news, bio, voting record) battles Stenholm, and Rep. Pete Sessions (news, bio, voting record) takes on Frost.

    UTAH (5) — Bush country. GOP Sen. Bob Bennett safe for third term. Republicans target Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson (news, bio, voting record) in GOP territory.

    VERMONT (3) — Kerry country. Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record) safe for sixth term. GOP Gov. Jim Douglas favored over Peter Clavelle.

    VIRGINIA (13) — Solid for Bush despite early Kerry effort.

    WASHINGTON (11) — Leans Kerry. Democratic Sen. Patty Murray (news, bio, voting record) favored over Rep. George Nethercutt (news, bio, voting record). Democratic Gov. Christine Gregoire appears on track for a new term. State Rep. Cathy McMorris favored to hold Nethercutt's seat for the GOP. Democrat Dave Ross and GOP King County Sheriff Dave Reichert in competitive race for another open Republican seat in Seattle area.

    WEST VIRGINIA (5) — Leans Bush. Democrat Joe Manchin versus Republican Monty Warner for governor.

    WISCONSIN (10) — Toss-up in a state Bush lost in 2000. Democratic Sen. Russell Feingold favored for new term.

    WYOMING (3) — Bush. No contest in Cheney's home state.

      A fair analysis from Mr Worden and friends, but as an Oregon resident he should probably know that Christine Gregoire is NOT our incumbent governor in Washington. That would be Gary Locke, who decided not to run again. Christine will be our next governor though. (The alternative is a Bush clone asshole who named his dog "Dubya" and plays with Anndrew Coulter dolls)

                What the Hell? My sister says Michigan (17 electoral votes) is shifting towards the 'Ketchup King'.

                Damn, I KNEW I should've absentee-voted via Michy! I voted down here in Georgia where it won't mean shit.

                    I can't, bonehead! When I registered to vote in Georgia (it's my state of residence now), it nullified my Michigan voting status. Had I not registered to vote in Georgia, I could've voted by absentee ballot from Michigan because I hadn't terminated my residency status. Do you understand now, Ford Baby? Until I relinquish my Michigan state resident status, I'm still a Michigan resident. I voted for Michigan/Detroit elections when I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, too. I did the absentee ballot voting.
