Metallica Feed 'Monster' To Film Fests, Add More Anger To Tour

    Band's documentary embraced by fans.

    by Jon Wiederhorn

Following a warm reception at this year's Sundance Film Festival, the Metallica documentary "Some Kind of Monster" is being entered in various film festivals around the world, including 11 in North America.

The members of Metallica's lives from the time they started working on their most recent album, St. Anger, to the first show of the 2003 tour, and it includes dramatic scenes of the group in therapy, confronting former members Dave Mustaine and Jason Newsted, and dealing with the demands of a newly clean and sober James Hetfield (see "Documentary Probes The Drama Behind Metallica's Anger").

So far, "Some Kind of Monster" has been previewed extensively for the media, and one screening has been held for 50 members of the band's fan club.

"The feedback [we got] from the true fans was so beautiful," Lars Ulrich said from Australia during a satellite press conference at Sundance. "They all talked universally about how they felt closer to us [after seeing it]. One guy said now that we had been working on being better people, he was going to work on being a better person himself, and a better fan of Metallica."

In 2002, when directors Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky pitched the idea of filming Metallica behind the scenes, they had no idea what would develop. "The idea was to do some kind of infomercial advertising our new album and the making of the record, but then some pretty huge things in our lives started happening and they were captured on film, and we continued filming," frontman James Hetfield explained.

Hetfield said the movie was just as valuable to his mental health as to his career.

"Connecting with people has never been easy for me," he said. "And now I realize that the more I do it, the more they know the real me, and the easier it is to be me. I've put myself out there, and if people choose to stomp on my heart or to embrace me, that's up to them. But I have done my part in letting people know what weaknesses and struggles I have, and I know it's good for me [to do that]."

Ulrich is equally stoked about the project. "I'm so proud of this film," he said. "And the important thing to realize is that this is not really a film about Metallica. It's a film about relationships, and the people who are having these relationships happen to live and breathe and play music in a band called Metallica."

In addition to announcing screenings for "Some Kind of Monster," Metallica have just added five new North American shows to their Madly in Anger Tour, which starts March 2 in Phoenix and features Godsmack opening all dates. The first new show is April 26 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Metallica's Madly in Anger North American tour, according to Elektra Records:

    Yawn.

I'll never see those pussies again. I saw them on the Load tour and they played "The Four Horseman" acoustically.

    DLR7884
    Fuck that, and fuck them.

If I want to see them live, I'll watch "Cliff 'Em All."

    That's real Metallica.

Generally speaking, I agree with you guys, they've certainly gone down a notch or two (or three) since the Black album....

I haven't seen these guys live though, so I'm kinda looking forward to it....

Also looking forward to seeing Godsmack open up for them....

Godsmack is cool, good live show.

I just hope you don't have to sit through an acoustic set like I did.

    DLR7884
They are more than 3 notches down, by the way.

    They added Saskatoon in May.

I am gonna go...the live boots I've been hearing seem to have good set lists.

Yeah, I was dumb enough to sit through it, and 3 other songs. I was so pissed that they ruined "Horseman," that I can't even remember the other songs they did.

    DLR7884
    Probably not worth remembering anyways.

I would go, if Metallica would play their old stuff, from the (MASTER OF PUPPETS) days, but I don't think they have it in them anymore, to play anything that heavy.

I don't care so much about Metallica but I loved Godsmack when I saw them a few years ago during a Finnish open air-festival with about 20000 others...

How many people can you seat at your show Va Beach VH Fan?

Here I think the max is 14 or 15,000.

I did not expect a sell out...especially in an hour and a half.
The only reason we got a show is because they could not fit in another Calgary date from what I am hearing.

The Scope is a medium seat arena, it holds about 12,000 for concerts....
