    Best acoustic steel stings

I like a set that has a normal "G" string (not wire wound)
    Anyone recommend some good brands...
I just put some Dean Merkley on my acoustic today, and
    they suck....

    Thanks Punk, any others ?

Have you tried the Diaddario acoustic strings ?
    I always liked their electrics..

Whats with all these wire wound g strings now ???

Every set I look at (even .010) have a wire wound
G -string these days, whats up with that ??

I've been real happy with Ernie Ball strings for both my electric and accoustic guitars. Gibson strings are good too but you typically pay more for them.

Big fan of D'addario's electric strings, don't care much at all for their acoustics. Weird. right? But kinda like Fender: their electrics are classics, their acoustics rank below...I dunoo...they ain't classics though!

Don't know what's up with the wire-wound thing, but never really minded it.

Is it a sound thing that you don't like in the wire wound or is it the texture?

I've always enjoyed Martin accoustic strings. They ring well and have a long life. I forget what size I use, but they're a nickel/copper mix.

For my electric guitar, I'm partial to D'addario 009-042 for the same reasons I like the Martins. The one time I tried Ernie Ball strings, they rusted within a week-- a problem I've never once had with D'addario.

I bought a bunch of D'addario nickel wound 9's when Guitar Center had a good sale going on them. Nice strings. Mine came in sealed bags full of an inert gas so they wouldn't corrode.

I never had rusty strings problems with Ernie Ball strings but body chemistry plays a huge part. Some people's sweat and body oil is more acidic than others so not everyone might experience the same string problems.

My brother has to play stainless steel strings or gold plated strings because he's alergic to nickel. I don't like the sound of stainless strings at all.

Its more a texture thing, even with the higher action, I like the strings
on my acoustic to "feel" like my electrics. I also find there is a slightly
different tone. I think the wirewound "G" is less bright tonewise.

i've been using a set of elixir
    coated strings on my maton
    for over a year.

they're 45 bucks, but shit they last!!

i slap darco 10's and 11's on the electrics
cause they're cheap and i change 'em every fortnight.

darco are mexican assembled martin strings.

back in the day i had a dr endorsement,
but their strings were very unreliable.
    (they'd literally unwind 'emselves!)

The Elixirs are great! I'm in NYC, and believe it or not, they're actually a little hard to find here - I think stores don't order a great deal b/c of the cost, but man if you don't grab 'em the day they come in, forget it, they're gone!

BTW - Panamark and Ashtralia: did you guys take part or watch the record setting 40 person surfing event yesterday?

I swear by Martin strings for the acoustic, wound G string and all, lol.
anything less than a 12 guage doesn't work well though and creates an annoying fret buzz because my action is set really low.

For the electric, the only strings that work with my Kahler Trem is the Dean Markley 740XL's and i have used them for years.

I tried a few sets of Elixir's and was not impressed with them at all, and they seemed to go dead quicker than any i have ever used.
