Civil Rights Group Seeks Kerry Apology

WASHINGTON - The head of a civil rights and legal services advocacy group wants Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) to apologize for saying he wouldn't be upset if he could be known as the second black president.


"John Kerry is not a black man — he is a privileged white man who has no idea what it is in this country to be a poor white in this country, let alone a black man," said Paula Diane Harris, founder of the Andrew Young National Center for Social Change.


Last week, Kerry told the American Urban Radio Network: "President Clinton (news - web sites) was often known as the first black president. I wouldn't be upset if I could earn the right to be the second."


Kerry's spokesman Chad Clanton said: "This was intended as a light-natured remark about President Clinton's strong legacy with African Americans It is a legacy that John Kerry would like to build upon if elected president. John Kerry has a record of fighting for civil rights and as president he will continue this fight."


Harris also criticized civil rights leaders who "sit back and ignore these types of comments, a practice that further insults African Americans."


"It seems that all these leaders care about is their personal agendas in how a 'John Kerry' will keep up their personal causes," she said.


The Andrew Young National Center for Social Change, based in Harrisburg, Pa., provides legal services to the poor.

About the only thing Kerry might do right, if elected, is Supreme Court nominations and possibly slow the damage to the environment done by the BCE - assuming his corporate donors don't pay him NOT to .

Aside from that, he'll be as committed to fascist imperialism and corporate consolidation as Junior. Any true conservative should be as appalled as any true liberal.

Heh heh heh... And this has nothing to do with supposed "corporate" ties. He's just a scumbag, through and through.

I think I've mentioned at least a few times in the past that although I considered Dean a little flaky, I admired his conviction to his cause (a socialist cause that is, and therefore I'd have to see him defeated, but I digress...) I believe Dean would've lost because the American public has shifted away from endorsing government intervention in daily life. Social programs have done nothing but prolong the problems they sought to remedy. Americans have realized this. But I enjoy the honest debate. This may come as a shock to you, but I don't think capitalism unkempt is the best plan for society. I believe alot of our leaders have done a wonderful job of stoking capitalism at every opportunity while ensuring the fruits of business is shared by as many citizens as possible. After all, our poor are rich by most the world's standards. We've got to be doing something right. But I think your party has taken it a bit to far. They've used social conscience as a campaign gimmick, utilizing tired old class-warfare tactics simply to prolong their reign as power brokers in American government (and not to mend social ailments). It's called "divide and conquer". And I truly think the American public is on to it. Well, at least the last several elections have given me that impression...

When your party quits serving itself over the public it supposedly represents, it may gain national prominence again. But you've got a bunch of house cleaning to do before this will happen.

I don't agree with a lot of FORDs post but he isn't in this peculiar 'Politics s a team sport' thing that seems prevelant here. I blame the primary system whereby people think of themselves as 'democrat' or 'republican' as opposed to 'person getting fucked by whoever either way...'
