What is your favorite vocal trick?

I just listened to "dance the night away" and the third line "and I feel her from across the room" always blows me away...

dave sings, suddenly screams and goes over a little giggle into singing again...just perfect...and a big SHUT THE FUCK UP to all the "dave-has-not-a-range-like-sammy-shit-talkers"

VH II features Dave enjoying his vocal tricks at thier best.

My personal fave is in "Outta Love Again" whree he sudden;y goes into this high-pitched siren to sing "FooooooooooooooL"

Light up the Sky is by far the best vocal range from Dave and the band.
"FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKIN' BITCH! WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE ANYWAYS? TALK TO ME LIKE THAT? FUCK YOU. DRAG QUEEN LOOKIN' WHORE- YOU AINT SHIT. YOUR THE FRECKLE TO THE LEFT OF MY BROWN EYE. NOW GO MAKE YOURSELF USEFUL...OH, PUT DAD ON THE PHONE"

i love push comes to shove. it's got soul...and it's surprised quite a few people i played it for. one by one, if you pick the right songs, you can DESTROY every preconceived notion about CVH: not heavy, not melodic, no soul, just wankin' off...besides some stand out drums on the song, push comes to shove has everybody firing on all cylinders...but at a slow steady pace. dave sings awesome!

Great topic but very hard to pick just one ...I will say one of my favorites is "Women in love". From the very beginning, a softer rasp to the stronger demands later in the song ...AWESOME !!!

    I agree with BFS.

Dave's vocals are amazing on You're No Good. I love the way his screams and Eds guitar go back and forth and sound so much alike.

    Great thread.

I like the "wow" before the A chord in In a simple Rhyme.
It's such a smooth transition between the quiet part and LOUD part (before the solo)

(They have it as "Woh" in the sheet music.) lmao
It may have been "Woh" if Popeye sang it.

    They are all so great!

The great thing about Dave is he always seems to add the perfect little laugh, hiccup, scream, etc., to enhance the song , without overdoing or forcing it. Very original stuff.

VHII definitely has a lot of good ones.

The way Dave finishes off Lady Luck, yes ah whoo!!

The little suck in breath part at the end of Loss of Control

I do what I want to!!!
I'm very proud of what was that band and what was that show and what it did mean to people. It disgusts me that it has turned into the complete opposite. That it now represents everything that I spoke against, that we suppoesedly represented the converse of. I don't want to have to remember that the team turned into that. Makes me question what the team was while I was a member. Was it all bullshit? If nothing else, it confirms in my mind that from my standpoint - yours truly, David Lee - not a fraction. If nothing else, this kind of morbid, wounded animal anger aimed my way has caused me to look deep into that bathroom mirror and come back to you with "my shit was legit." It was for real. And perhaps the test is time. Because here I am, a decade and a half later, haven't changed much. I look a little different, but not much. My sense of humour is about the same.

So so many to name...Dave is just awesome, but we all know that...
    <img src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y214/screwthesisters/del2.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com">
"So there, I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopkeeper and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...Nasty business, really, but sure enough I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show..."

Hey, I'm surprised we've all forgotten to include the scream at the intro of "Jump"!

Such an instantly identifiable signature yelp...sounds lik a cross between Janis Joplin, a Viagra'd Tarzan, and a Chuck Jones character.

    It's BADASS.

I remember the first time I heard the song (before the album was even released), the first few moments I was thinking "Whoa, a little heavy on all the synths there guys", but once that Dave "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOWWWW!!!" comes in, immediately I was thinking, "Doesn't matter how many synths they lay on this, this is still VAN-FUCKIN'-HALEN".

    His best scream, fuckin' period.

Dave is always specially awesome on vocals. Ha! Ha! I can't help grinning almost every time I listen to VH or DLR even if it's for the millionth time.

"Hear about it later" is another great example (but now we can browse the whole catalogue once again).
From the scream of the intro to the end of the track, where he sings between crooner style and tough as tough can, Dave sounds like he's over the moon.
I dig the insane scream in the beginning of "Unchained" a lot too (Haaaaaaaaa... ha-ha-haaa!!!). Yeah, I dig that sane madness of his!
