Lawmakers may get ethics training course

In a sign that Republican leaders are increasingly anxious about the image of the House of Representatives in the aftermath of federal bribery convictions, the House speaker, J. Dennis Hastert, has raised the prospect of a new ethics training course for lawmakers.

House members and congressional aides said Hastert, a Republican of Illinois, broached the subject Wednesday in a private session with House Republicans while they discussed Randy Cunningham, the California Republican who pleaded guilty last week in a corruption case.

"The speaker wants members on both sides of the aisle to understand the nuances of House rules," said Ron Bonjean, a spokesman for Hastert, when asked about the proposal. (NYT)
