    Gore's Global Warming speech

Al Gore to Expose Bush on Environment, Global-Warming
Thursday January 8, 3:37 pm ET
New York Speech Sponsored by MoveOn.org & Environment2004
    Thursday, Jan. 15 at Noon

NEW YORK, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Former Vice President Al Gore will deliver a major address attacking the Bush Administration's policies on global warming and the environment at the historic Beacon Theatre in New York City on Thursday, January 15. The speech is being co-sponsored by MoveOn.org and Environment2004.
Mr. Gore will issue an indictment of the Bush administration's inaction on global warming, linking the issue to U.S. national security. He will show that global warming is happening right now, and yet the President is choosing to help his coal- and oil-company supporters rather than advance modern technologies that can affordably solve this critical problem. The speech will also explore the administration's deliberate attempts to mislead the public as it attacks basic environmental laws and protection.

This is a free event, but attendance is open only to members of MoveOn.org and Environment2004 who have RSVP'd, and to credentialed journalists. Journalists may alternatively listen to the speech by phoning in. Members of the media planning to attend the event or join the listen-in conference call MUST RSVP BY EMAIL to lsabori@fenton.com or cara@fenton.com.

Gore's previous two speeches for MoveOn.org addressed the credibility of the administration and its attacks on civil liberties.

WHAT: Major policy address by Al Gore
WHEN: Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Noon
(Introductions at 12:00; speech at 12:15pm)
WHERE: Beacon Theatre, 2124 Broadway, btwn 74th and 75th Streets,
    New York City

yeah, he should have been in the Northwest where we have had quite a few unseasonably warm days in the 50's lately. Granted, it's been rainy, which is hardly strange. But a much warmer rain than usual in January.

I teach earth science to 8th graders, I am a democrat and an environmentalist, but I think that the Earth goes through cycles that we dont even understand yet, and that global warming is maybe hyped too much.

There is no doubt that greenhouse gasses have increased over the last 50 years, but I think that ol' mother nature can take care of herself...

    Meat-Locker Chill Settles Over Northeast

By TANIA FUENTEZ, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - A blustery snowstorm combined with painfully cold arctic air descended on the Northeast on Thursday, trapping New York-bound ferries in the ice, grounding hundreds of flights and prompting warnings to bundle up from Maine to Pennsylvania.

Fine, powdery snow fell across much of the region, with the mercury dipping into the single digits in many places and 20 and 30 degrees below zero in others — a brutal combination that closed schools, disabled car batteries, caused fender-benders and forced even ski resorts to close.

In Yonkers, N.Y., retired construction worker Thomas Robbins, 66, pulled over to the side of the slippery Bronx River Parkway. "Mostly I'm resting my hands," he said. "I'm gripping the wheel so tight because I'm afraid of skidding."

Some ferries linking New Jersey and New York City were iced in, forcing commuters to hop buses or find some other way to work. Two New York-area airports, La Guardia and Newark Liberty, reported more than 200 flights canceled.

"Any exposed skin can freeze in less than 30 minutes," warned Scott Reynolds, a National Weather Service forecaster in New York City.

A hiker was found dead in New Hampshire's White Mountains, where temperatures fell to minus 44 and the wind chill approached minus 100. Friends said the middle-aged man had been outdoors since Monday.

He was well-equipped, including a tent and a stove, but "in these extreme temperatures, it's not always going to cut it," said Fish and Game Department Lt. Robert Bryant.

The bitter cold could worsen Friday, leading to concerns about blackouts.

Vermont's governor and power companies in Connecticut warned that brief rolling blackouts might occur in a few places in southern New England on Thursday night. Utilities blamed the electricity shortage on high customer demand, but Gov. James Douglas said the problem was a lack of natural gas needed to run power plants.

Philadelphia got 4 inches of snow and reached a high temperature of 22, but the mercury was expected to drop to zero for the first time in a decade Thursday night.

Boston saw only a dusting of snow, but Harwich, Mass., on Cape Cod received 4 inches. The low for Boston came in at minus 4.

New York City reached a high of just 14 degrees and got 5 inches of snow before it tapered off to flurries at midmorning. With a wind chill of 20 below zero in the forecast for Thursday night, the city planned to search the streets for homeless people and bring those in danger indoors — against their will, if necessary.

In Uxbridge, Mass., near Worcester, school buses had trouble running because the cold caused their diesel fuel to congeal. School officials finally told parents to keep their children home Thursday.

More than 250 Massachusetts districts and schools decided to close Friday, joining hundreds of others throughout the region.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci declared a civil emergency, waiving certain trucking regulations so fuel oil delivery drivers could work overtime. The temperature hit 31 below at Ninemile Bridge.

Big Rock ski resort in Maine closed for a second straight day. General manager Tim Prather said it was minus 12 by midday, which felt like 37 below with the wind. "That's pretty brutal when you're going up a lift," he said.

In Whitefield, N.H., the temperature dipped as low as 35 degrees below zero. In Watertown, N.Y., it was minus 31, with a wind chill of minus 46.

All of upstate New York fell under a wind-chill warning Thursday night for readings as low as minus 50.

Full-service gas stations that let drivers stay nice and warm reported booming business in New Hampshire.

National Weather Service meteorologist Tony Lacroix said weekend temperatures in New Hampshire are expected to climb into the 20s.

"Golly, that's a heat wave," he said.

    From Space.com

    January 15

    Mars Warmer than Northeast Cities

PHILADELPHIA - We're supposed to run out of degrees here tonight, with a forecast low of 0 Fahrenheit. It's annoyingly frigid as some of the coldest air in decades settles over the northeastern United States. Highs in the low 20s today. It's worse of course in Boston, where today's high was about 7.

At least it's not as bad as Mars, right?

Despite the red planet's reputation for being cold -- it's half again as far from the Sun as we are and has much less atmosphere to hold heat in -- NASA's Spirit rover is enjoying comfortable afternoon temperatures right now compared to parts of the Northeast.

Wednesday in the early afternoon at the Gusev crater it was plus 12 degrees Fahrenheit (-11 Celsius), according to the rover's infrared instrument.

At 1 p.m. Wednesday in Syracuse, N.Y. it was -4 Fahrenheit. In Mt. Washington, N.H. it was -36.

Even a Canadian would not enjoy a night outside on Mars, though. After sundown the temperature plummeted to about -130 Fahrenheit (-90 Celsius) last night, said Michael Smith of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

"For the Northeast, that record will be a little harder to break," said Keith Eggleston, senior climatologist at Cornell University's Northeast Regional Climate Center.

Oh, been there and done that. Just a couple months ago actually... my gas was totally shut off during the coldest week we had here so far this winter. (10 - 20 degrees or something like that) Fortunately for me, I was house sitting for my friends who were out of the country most of that time, so I only had to freeze my ass off for two days before they fixed it.

Hope you can get yours fixed soon

Dude, this one post has restored a little bit of my faith in Democrats (I usually have next to none, given that most of them make up their minds on any particular issue regardless of evidence to the contrary.) The modern day Democrat seems to base all policy on either a socialist agenda (I.E. anti-capitalist agenda), voter pandering, or their "feelings" on any particular issue (followed by a hefty dose of "good intentions"). Being a democrat and thinking objectively (especialy regarding the environment) seem to be oxy-moronic these days. It's good to see not all of you are crazy commies!

Did you read what I said about Howard Dean in another thread? (the one about Dean's wife)

Hows that for an objectively thinking democrat.

Just wish that republicans were as objective. You probably think that you are, but you aren't.

"Asscrotch" at least realizes that Junior's overspending is definitely NOT in line with traditional Republican Conservative values. But I doubt that will be enough to make him turn from the dark side

You mean "to" the dark side...

And P.A., what am I not "objective" on?

Gay marriage? Fiscal discipline? Welfare reform?

Pick one, or any other topic and let's talk.

i was so worried about my guinea pig and the turtles, but they made it thru the night. We wrapped Alfie (the guinea pig) up in blankets and the turtles I put by the electric heater. We got the pipes rustling now, so hopefully all is well.
