    Already posted that...

There is a longer version that exists showing the Ukrainian forces counter attacking and clearing a trench system with bodies from both sides (but mostly Russian) laying around being stepped over...

The fish rots at the head

Russian army commander arrested for ‘selling tank engines’
    James Kilner
Thu, April 27, 2023 at 3:54 PM EDT·2 min read

A Russian army officer has been arrested for allegedly stealing the engines out of T-90 battle tanks.

The Kommersant newspaper reported that Colonel Alexander Denisov is accused of stealing seven V-92S2 engines worth 20.5 million roubles (around £200,000) between November 2021 and April 2022.

Col Denisov, who is in charge of technical support for tanks in the Southern Military District, was arrested last month near Rostov in southern Russia and was charged with “stealing parts intended to be installed on tanks”.

Corruption plagues Russia, especially in its military, and has been blamed for hindering the Russian army since it launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Russian soldiers have been sent into battle with rusty weapons and broken radios. Tanks have regularly run out of fuel and broken down.

Western analysts have estimated that Russia has lost nearly 2,000 tanks in the 14 months of the war and the Foreign Office has said that the Russian army has had to use previously mothballed T-62 tanks, produced before 1975, as battlefield replacements.

Since they entered service in the early 1990s, T-90 tanks have become the backbone of Russia’s armoured divisions. They were designed in the Soviet Union to be simple, light and fast and are now mainly powered by the 12-cylinder V-92S2 engine which is produced at the Chelyabinsk tractor factory, close to the Ural Mountains.

Each engine weighs roughly one tonne and can generate 1,000 horsepower. When it was introduced in 2000, the V-92S2 engine was considered the best and most powerful tank engine in the Russian army.

Prosecutors at the Rostov military garrison court in southern Russia said that Col Denisov had sold the engines on the black market. In 2019, two other Russian army officers were convicted of a similar theft.

Col Denisov has pleaded not guilty.

What...what in the fuck is this?

    https://edition.cnn.com/2023/05/08/e...cmd/index.html

Russians using tanks designed in 1948.

The tanks are T-55s, a model first commissioned by the Soviet Union’s Red Army in 1948, shortly after the end of World War II.
They’re so old, you can find them in museums. But in following decades, when deployed against Western-built tanks – in some Arab-Israeli conflicts, and then in the Gulf War – they were no match.
“In the first Gulf War, in 1991 for example, the American and British tanks were knocking out Iraqi T-55s from 23 kilometers.

I posted the above at the end of March here. It's the T-54/55 series, a pretty good old tank noted for reliability and ease of use/maintenance is still in use in Third World battlegrounds like the Sudan. The Ukrainians are also fielding Romanian donated T-55's but the difference is that those are modernized with a NATO L7/M68 105mm gun that was standard before the M-1 Abrams got the 120mm Rheinmetall gun along with most other tanks like the German Leopard II series. More importantly the Ukraine's T-55's have had modern optics and fire control systems installed along with extra turret armor.

It seems the Russian are just deploying these T-54/55's largely as-is, with tech dated to the late 1950's or mid-60's at best. The plus side is that it's easier to stuff them with conscript crews as they are pretty crude and easy to learn on. And they might be useful as a rear echelon indirect fire platform and counter-guerilla occupation tank supporting infantry and police.

But the downside is that their 1958 dated IR night rangefinders and sights can be easily targeted by any newer tank like the T-64 on. And their armor is nearly useless against any modern antitank missile system..

I honestly think one of Russia's biggest problems is history. US or UK have our problems and some of them are based on myths but Russia is way worse for fake history.

Putin is trying to invoke the WW2 stuff just now about Ukraine and how the West should remember that Russia saved us all from the Nazis.

The problem with this is that he probably doesn't even know what happened in WW2 never mind the average Russian. The resources the US and UK provided to them is just staggering, 400,000 jeeps & trucks
14,000 airplanes, 8,000 tractors, 13,000 tanks Over 50% of their vehicles, Every 'victory' they had against the Germans was basically them losing 5 or 10 times as many as the Germans but just not allowing anyone to give a fuck.

No one is teaching in Russian schools or universities about the massive help Russia had from the West in WW2.

For example even at their great fucking victory at Kursk they outnumbered the Germans 2 to 1 but sill lost more than 3 times as many tanks and 5 times as many men. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kursk

So Russia sank all their money and resources into nukes and let the rest of the military go without. Not surprised.

I think they sunk all their money into kickbacks. Generals who officially are on $150k salary a year have big yachts.

Also it's not US size budgets they have been spending, less than a tenth of the US more like UK spending levels.

It's not even a war anymore as it is legalized human hunting of what's left of the RuZZian military. Bodies are piling up everywhere and no one in RuZZia gives a shit. It's going to be a Summer of Slaughter.

Anti-Putin Russian Guerillas Strike Russian Border Town, Panic Belgorod

Pro-Ukrainian Russian partisans advance into Russia’s Belgorod region in surprise raid
A lightning raid that stuns Moscow.

Mon, May 22, 2023 at 1:20 PM EDT

KYIV — Russia may have taken the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut Sunday, but forces aligned with Ukraine apparently took a tiny part of Russia on Monday — or so video and photograph footage suggested as of just after noon local time. Ukrainian armored vehicles, including at least one tank, were seen attacking a border post, in the town of Kozinka, in the Belgorod region of southern Russia.

Drone footage, taken from the Ukrainian side of the border, showed a lone tank advancing toward the Russian border checkpoint in Kozinka, the main building of which had several large holes blasted in its exterior walls. A group of three light armored vehicles was also spotted in the same location, with Ukrainian marks — white crosses — clearly painted on their hulls. Footage circulating on social media and purportedly shot inside the checkpoint building showed Russian passports scattered on the floor, a portrait of Vladimir Putin hanging on the wall and a dead border guard.

What seemed to be a relatively simple Ukrainian cross-border raid — not the first of its kind in 15 months of war — soon revealed itself to be a far more ambitious and dug-in incursion into Russian territory. From Kozinka, the counter-invaders advanced toward the larger Russian town of Grayvoron. As of Monday morning, the Ukrainian-aligned forces had advanced 3.5 miles over the border into Russia.

As they progressed, the pro-Ukraine Russians handed out leaflets telling Russian soldiers how to surrender and promising their good treatment if the soldiers did. “The best deсision for you and your family is to surrender to the Armed Forces of Ukraine!” the leaflets read. “The prisoners are fed according to the norm of our soldiers, and if you have desire you will be arranged for paid work.”

    Ukraine denies involvement

Andriy Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine's military intelligence directorate, claimed that the operation in the Belgorod region was carried out exclusively by Russian citizens, with the aim to “create a certain security zone to protect the Ukrainian civilian population.” Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, also claimed that Kyiv had no direct involvement in the events in Belgorod, which they were watching “with interest.”

“As you know, tanks are sold at any Russian military store and underground guerrilla groups are composed of Russian citizens,” Podoliak said.

Ukraine’s denial mirrored and mocked the Kremlin’s own past denials of its incursions into Ukraine, including the 2014 seizure and illegal annexation of Crimea.

Another senior Ukrainian military intelligence official, in what can be described as a smirking disavowal of any hand in the matter, told Yahoo News: “These are not regular units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, definitely not our style of warfare. There are many analogies in history where the people themselves decide when to take up arms and defend their rights and freedoms. Finland in 1939, Hungary in 1956, Czechoslovakia in 1968. Similarly Ukraine in 2014, in the territory of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions. As a rule, a referendum with 82% to 84% support from the local population follows. In any case, ‘We are not there.’”

“Russian volunteers have proven that the Russian government is completely defenseless against organized resistance by Russians,” the official told Yahoo News. “Ukraine welcomes the desire of Russians to change the political system in their own country.”

    Russia reacts

The Russian military scrambled to get reinforcements to the border as the advance of the pro-Ukrainian forces continued. Mi-8 transport helicopters were seen over Kozinka and Rakitnoye, dropping flares and flying low in an attempt to avoid portable surface-to-air missiles. Local Russian civilians fled, forming long lines of traffic as they made their exit from the area.

The Kremlin’s public reaction was first an attempt to downplay the attack. Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, described the action as the work of a “Ukrainian sabotage group” but said Russia had “sufficient forces” in Belgorod to deal with them.

“A sabotage and reconnaissance group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine entered the territory of the Grayvoron district,” Vyacheslav Gladkov, the Russian governor of the region, said in a statement. “The armed forces of the Russian Federation, together with the border service, the Russian Guard and the FSB,” he added, referring to the successor agency of the Soviet KGB, “are taking the necessary measures to eliminate the enemy.” Russian military bloggers also claimed that the deputy head of the Grayvoron city administration was wounded “during the shelling of the administration building,” a claim Yahoo News cannot independently verify.

Though the prospects for the invaders to hang on to any territorial gains is dim, the incursion has already embarrassed the Kremlin a day after its declaration of victory in Bakhmut, a blasted-out city in Donetsk, which Russian forces — particularly the Wagner mercenary corps — have been trying to sack for nine months. The Belgorod raid will no doubt force the Russian military to redeploy elements from a badly strained army to reinforce the border region.

Simply because the RuZZian government has not lead a crackdown on these play soldier weekend warrior shitheads. When they do, Pooptin will make examples out of them because that what RuZZia does to its dissenting citizens. It's pretty much RuZZia's entire history

Russia has lost two-thirds of its tanks amid the stalled Ukraine invasion, a blog said.

The figures confirm reports that Russia's armored vehicles have been decimated during the war.

The country's military has had to take Soviet-era tanks out of storage to fight.

The Russian military has lost at least two-thirds of its tanks since it launched its invasion of Ukraine, according to analysts.

Oryx, a Netherlands-based open source intelligence website, said that the Kremlin's total tank loss in Ukraine now stands at around 2,000.

The website, which publishes a running tally of Russian military weapons and equipment losses based on pictures and other battlefield data, said 1,239 of the tanks had been destroyed, 106 damaged, 113 abandoned, and 544 captured.

Jakub Janovsky, a military analyst who contributes to the website, told Insider that Russia had started the war with around 3,000 operational tanks.

Blue and yellow flag, Russian dead attest to Ukrainian advance in south

Blue and yellow flag, Russian dead attest to Ukrainian advance in south

    Vitalii Hnidyi
Tue, June 13, 2023 at 5:14 AM EDT·5 min read

NESKUCHNE, Ukraine (Reuters) -Ukraine's blue and yellow flag flew over a ruined grocery store and Russian soldiers lay dead in the street of the village of Neskuchne, reached by Reuters journalists on Tuesday in the first independent confirmation of Ukraine's biggest advances for seven months against Russia's invasion.

Russia has not acknowledged any Ukrainian gains, and President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that for now he saw no need for a new mobilisation of fighting men to confront the Ukrainian counteroffensive launched last week.

"There is no such need today," Putin told a televised meeting of Russian war correspondents and military bloggers when asked about another mobilisation. But he added that it all depended on what Russia wanted to achieve in what it describes as a "special military operation" in Ukraine.

More than 15 months since Putin sent troops into Ukraine, Russian and Ukrainian forces are still battling along a 1,000-km (600-mile) front line, though far from the capital Kyiv.

Russian forces tried, and failed, to capture Kyiv in the hours and days after the invasion began on Feb. 24 last year.

In comments shown on the Russian state TV broadcast, Putin said he faced a question only he could answer - should Russia try to take Kyiv again?

Once again on Tuesday Putin threatened to withdraw Russia from the Black Sea grain deal, designed to ease a global food crisis worsened by the invasion, saying the West had cheated Moscow. Russia and Ukraine are both major agricultural exporters.

"We are thinking about getting out of this grain deal now," Putin told the meeting. "Unfortunately, we were once again cheated - nothing was done in terms of liberalising the supply of our grain to foreign markets."

The deal brokered by the United Nations and Turkey will expire on July 17 unless Russia agrees to extend it.

UKRAINIAN TROOPS RIDE THROUGH RECAPTURED VILLAGE

Not a single resident could be found in Neskuchne, one of a cluster of settlements on the Mokry Yali river that Ukraine says its troops have captured since their counteroffensive began in a steady advance southwards into Russian-held territory.

Ukrainian troops rode through the muddy streets on the back of a tank and in a pick-up truck. A warplane flew overhead, firing flares.

"Three days ago the Russian forces were still here. We chased them out of Neskuchne. Glory to Ukraine," said Artem, a member of a Ukrainian territorial defence unit, who gave no surname.

The mainly one- and two-storey buildings in the village, which had a population of several hundred before the invasion, had nearly all been damaged. The scene was silent, apart for the crump of artillery fire in the distance.

Reuters saw at least three dead Russian soldiers lying in the street, including one whose fly-blown body lay by an abandoned Russian military vehicle. Artem said the advancing Ukrainian troops had watched from a drone as comrades initially tried to evacuate him, only to dump him and flee.

Wagner Merc Leader Prigozhin Turns Against the War

Prigozhin Derides Ukraine Invasion as ‘Racket’ to Enrich Russia’s Elite
Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, who leads the private Wagner force, has been scathing of Russia’s military leadership for months, but the 30-minute video he released on Friday took his criticism to a new level.

Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, the outspoken Russian mercenary tycoon, described his country’s invasion of Ukraine on Friday as a “racket” perpetrated by a corrupt elite chasing money and glory without concern for Russian lives.

While Mr. Prigozhin, who leads the private Wagner force that has been fighting alongside the Russian military in Ukraine, has been scathing of Russia’s military leadership for months, the 30-minute video monologue he released on Friday took his criticism to a new level.

He did not explicitly impugn President Vladimir V. Putin, instead casting him as a leader being misled by his officials. But in dismissing the Kremlin’s narrative that the invasion was of existential necessity for the Russian nation, Mr. Prigozhin went farther than anyone in Russia’s security establishment in publicly challenging the wisdom of the war.

“The war wasn’t needed to return Russian citizens to our bosom, nor to demilitarize or denazify Ukraine,” Mr. Prigozhin said, referring to Mr. Putin’s initial justifications for the war. “The war was needed so that a bunch of animals could simply exult in glory.”

Friday’s diatribe deepened the enigma of Mr. Prigozhin’s ambiguous role in Mr. Putin’s system. His Wagner troops, composed of veteran fighters as well as thousands of convicts whom Mr. Prigozhin personally recruited from Russian prisons, proved key in capturing the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in May after a monthslong battle.

But during the battle for Bakhmut Mr. Prigozhin also emerged as a populist political figure, excoriating Russia’s military leadership for corruption and for not providing his forces with enough ammunition. His angry recordings and videos posted to the Telegram messaging network cast top military and Kremlin officials as unaware and uncaring of the struggles of regular Russian soldiers.

Mr. Putin has not reined in Mr. Prigozhin, even as his security forces have jailed or fined thousands of Russians for criticizing the military or opposing the war. Some people who know Mr. Putin have said they believe that the president still sees Mr. Prigozhin as a loyal servant applying needed pressure on a sprawling military apparatus. Others theorize that the Kremlin has orchestrated Mr. Prigozhin’s tirades against Sergei K. Shoigu, the defense minister, to deflect blame from Mr. Putin himself.

But Friday’s video complicated the picture, with Mr. Prigozhin going after not just Mr. Shoigu but also unnamed “oligarchs” around Mr. Putin, while casting the entire official rhetoric around the invasion as a sham. He said there was “nothing out of the ordinary” in Ukraine’s military posture on the eve of the February 2022 invasion — challenging the Kremlin’s justification that Ukraine was on the verge of attacking Russian-backed separatist territory in the country’s east.

“Our holy war with those who offend the Russian people, with those who are trying to humiliate them, has turned into a racket,” he said.

The comments come as Russia fights to hold back Ukraine’s counteroffensive — a fight that Mr. Prigozhin asserted in his video was going much more poorly for Russia than the government was letting on. On Telegram, pro-war commentators quickly pushed back against Mr. Prigozhin, including Igor Girkin, a former paramilitary commander who himself has often criticized Russia’s top brass.

“Prigozhin already should have been handed over to a military tribunal for many things,” Mr. Girkin wrote. “Now also for treason.”
